Keyword Research for Low Volume Keywords
-
Hey friends,
I'm looking for a little keyword research direction here, specifically for keywords and phrases with low search volume. I'm just going to give a recent example:
I just finished a piece of content on customer experience. I began the process with some keyword research. Based on Moz's keyword explorer, "customer experience" has a monthly volume of 2.9k-4.3k. Sweet. So I move onto related queries and longer tail phrases to narrow my content approach. But just about any relevant phrase shows either a volume of 0-10 or 11-50 and very similar difficulty metrics, making it tough to choose a direction.
So "what is customer experience" shows a monthly volume of 0-10. SEM Rush reports ~350 searches a month. I understand SEM Rush uses broader match, but I guess what I'm asking is: how do I perform keyword research with such minuscule volumes and such little data to differentiate?
I've looked at Russ Jones' answer to a similar question here on how Keyword Explorer works: https://moz.com/community/q/what-is-a-good-keyword-volume-score ... but I still don't have a ton of clarity.
Any advice would be awesome!

Very helpful, I've never explored the lexical similarity within keyword suggestions.
Also – very much enjoyed your recent Whiteboard Friday on profiting as an agency.
Thanks Russ!

Hey, thanks for the great question!
This is a great time to use the "Group by Lexical Similarity" feature in Keyword Explorer. You will find that most long tail keywords have multiple variants and that writing content on that topic will allow you to rank for all of them! For example, we might show 11-50 searches for the keyword "used fishing rods for kids" but also show another 11-50 for "used fishing rods for children" and yet another 11-50 for "used fishing rod for kid". As you can imagine, the same piece of content would rank for all.
Good luck!

Hi, my first time in the community. my web site is pretty new and I'm focusing now on the Onsite SEO. I am using an outsourcing company that writing me content, and I want to start my blog and publish it. but, I didn't finish yet my Keyword research, is it useless from google perspective to publish it without any keywords? it can hurt my site if ill publish it without any keywords inside of the article? or it still can be good for my site ranking/power? thanks !!!

Internal URLs competing for keyword
I have an affiliate site where we have reviews of bookmakers, which are optimized for the bookmakers name as a key word. We have seen a drop in rankings and at this point we are out ranked by a lot of pages including our own. We also have a community forum and write news and articles about the the bookmakers. The thing is, that these forum threads and articles often out rank our review pages, which are the pages we need people to land on in order to convert. This page: http://www.betxpert.com/bookmakere/bet365 is optimized for "bet365" and is at this point outranked by http://www.betxpert.com/artikel/ny-funktion-hos-bet365-afslut-vaeddemaal-foer-tid. This page actually links to the review. What should i do in order to increase ranks for my pages? Make the forum threads and articles crappy for the key word? Would it help to add a canonical link to the articles? Would it help to remove the meta tag for update time of the review, such that Google does not downrank for not being recent? -Rasmus

Finding new keyword research tools
Does anyone have any recommendations for tools to help speed up the initial keyword reporting process? I'm looking for tips to streamline the current system of manually researching competition reports. Thanks.

How can I learn what are the most popular keyword phrases?
I have done a lot of research on Google AdSense (e.g. how to get started, best practices, how much money can be made, custom channels). I want to write a blog post based on my research, but my question is -- how can I learn what are the most common questions about Google AdSense or Internet advertising from a keyword search perspective? For example, are more people searching for "How to make money with AdSense" vs "How to make money with Internet advertising" vs "How to make money with a website"? How do I know which phrase is searched most? It seems to me that I should make my page title, URL, H1, etc. exactly match (or as close as possible within proper grammar) the question that is most often searched. Thanks everyone! Ryan

Keyword variations
I have a question about keyword variations. To be specific, let's say "blue upside down cars" has low competition but fairly low traffic. However, the shortened variation "upside down cars" has low competition but extremely high traffic. Can I double my bet by going ahead and using "blue upside down cars" whereby in some instances Google would refer traffic based on the entire keyword, but it would also refer traffic based on the the last part of the keyword which has the higher traffic ("upside down cars"). In this case, we would optimize around "blue upside down cars" with hopes of getting traffic for both keywords (the long tail and longer tail). Is there any reason not to pursue this strategy? I hope I made sense!

Keyword Research (dash or no dash)
I have a client that has been optimizing for "print and apply" for the past 5 months. Yesterday they decided it was more grammatically correct to use "print-and-apply." There question to me was "is this going to effect our SEO?" So... I checked the difficulty using the keyword analysis tool, both keywords had the same broad/exact adwords traffic as well as difficulty percentage. When reviewing the top 25 listings for each keyword it looks like the same sites rank in the SERPs between 1-8 and then after that it is completely different. So, is there a better keyword to target? Are these two keywords different enough to truly have separate search results?

The top 8 results didn't even target "print-and-apply" in there content or title tags... Thanks for the input/discussion - Kyle0 -
Targeting Keywords from the homepage
I tend to focus on two or three main keywords to target from the homepage. In fact come to think of it from all pages. Do you target up to 10 keywords of more from one page. Taking longer tail keywords into consideration. Granted the limits to any phrase or keyword group.

Google SERPS for similar Keywords?
I have website which is being listed for a keyword which is not in the site. It seems that google is using a Thesaurus to find words with similar meaning. Is this right? How could this be used for SEO purposes?
