Beta Site Removal best practices
-
Hi everyone.
We are doing a CMS migration and site redesign with some structural changes. Our temporarily Beta site (one of the staging environments and the only one that is not behind firewall) started appearing in search. Site got indexed before we added robots.txt due to dev error (at that time all pages were index, follow due to nature of beta site, it is a final stage that mirrors live site)As an remedy, we implemented robots.txt for beta version as :
User-Agent: *
Disallow: /Removed beta form search for 90 days. Also, changed all pages to no index/no follow . Those blockers will be changed once code for beta get pushed into production.
However,
We already have all links redirected (301) from old site to new one. this will go in effect once migration starts (we will go live with completely redesigned site that is now in beta, in few days). After that, beta will be deleted completely and become 404 or 410. So the question is, should we delete beta site and simple make 404/410 without any redirects (site as is existed for only few days ).
What is best thing to do, we don't want to hurt our SEO equity. Please let me know if you need more clarification. Thank you!

Great point.
I am planing to 404 beta so after some time all indexation will be dropped. Thank you so much!

One thing that you may want to try is to sync up a Google Search Console profile to that subdomain and then ask Google to remove the URL's from it's listing to help speed up the process.
Google treats domains and subdomains differently. I wouldn't worry about redirecting the subdomain beta URL's to the main site as they were just indexed and have no value. Just focus on the no-indexing and you should be fine.
Also, I'd check and see if the dev site got indexed in Bing and do the same thing with Bing Webmaster Tools.
I hope that helps!

Hi John,
Beta is on sub domain. Beta.domain.com .
Beta site is removed from search for 90 days and we are trying to null any traces of it after migration is over.
Thank you

Hey there! Is the beta site on a subdomain or in a subdirectory of the new site? We typically build our dev sites on subdomains. If you do, I have some good feedback for you on this. Let me know! Thanks!

Hi There,
I am sorry to hear about your situation, I have experienced this often as developers used to forget to add Robots.txt or they would use the wrong setting for no-follow no-index meta. We experienced that Google was able to detect the live version was current and updated one; as we would be working on it more often once the website was launched. We tried both methods but beta version 301 created more complications than providing solutions as we had to keep it updated along the lines of live website. After we realized that live version was being valued and given authority by Google, we never tried to pass authority from beta websites as that would complicate the things further.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Vijay

Best Practices to Design Site Mock Up Using Wordpress Rather than Wireframes?
We are in the process of redesigning our real estate website. Our designer/developer is very quick and confident on Wordpress. He suggests designing directly on Wordpress and bypassing wireframes and a mock ups. He is very confident in his Wordpress abilities. Is it a mistake to take this approach? He has also asked that we select a real estate theme at this point. I would think that the theme would be selected after the wireframes and mock ups get done. But there are certainly different approaches. Are there best practices for redesigning a webiste; any suggestions? Are there significant risks/disadvantages to bypassing wireframes/mock ups? Thanks,

Best support site software to use
Hi Guys We currently use Desk to run our company support site, it seems ok (I don't administer it), however is it very template driven and doesn't allow useful tools such as being able to add metadata to each page (hence in our Moz crawl tests we get a large number of no metadata errors (which seems like a lost opportunity for us to optimise the site). Our support team are looking to implement MadCap Flare as an information management tool, however this tool outputs HTML as iframes which obviously make it hard for google to crawl the content. We recently implemented HubSpot as our content marketing platform which is great, and we'd love to have the support site hosted on this (great for tracking traffic etc), however as far as I'm aware MadCap Flare doesn't integrate directly with HubSpot....so looking for suggestions on what others are successfully using to host/manage their SEO optimised support sites? Cheers Matt

Will an inbound follow link on a site be devalued by an inbound affiliate link on the same site?
Hey guys, quick question I didn't find an answer to online. Scenario: 1. Site A links to Site B. It's a natural, regular, follow-link 2. Site A joins Site B's affiliate program, and adds an affiliate link Question: Does the first, regular follow link get devalued by the second affiliate link? Cheers!

Best way to permanently remove URLs from the Google index?
We have several subdomains we use for testing applications. Even if we block with robots.txt, these subdomains still appear to get indexed (though they show as blocked by robots.txt. I've claimed these subdomains and requested permanent removal, but it appears that after a certain time period (6 months)? Google will re-index (and mark them as blocked by robots.txt). What is the best way to permanently remove these from the index? We can't use login to block because our clients want to be able to view these applications without needing to login. What is the next best solution?

Best practice?
Hi there, I have recently written an article which I have posted on an online newspaper website. I want to use this article and put it on my blog also, the reason the article will be placed on my blog is to drive users from my email marketing activities. Would it simply be best practice to disallow Google from crawling this page? or put a rel canonical on the article placed on my blog pointing to the article placed on the online newspaper website? Thanks for any suggestions

I have a website: www.letsflycheaper.com with a Domain Authority of 80, and my target keywords are keywords like: cheap business class, business class flights.
My target page is: www.letsflycheaper.com/business-class.php. With all my keywords I am page 2 and I have a real hard time getting on the first page, but if I look at my competitors like: www.wholesale-flights.com with a Domain Authority of 'just' 50, crappy backlinks and so on, they are all on the first page with almost all of my keywords that I want to target. What do I do wrong? Can you maybe give me a couple tips on where I should focus on more? Hopefully you guys can help me... Kind Regards, Ramon van Meer0
