Heroku, Subdomains, redirecting to different servers & SEO
-
Hi all,
I've got a big question.
I'm helping out with digital marketing at a non-profit that I volunteer with.
We're working on developing an on site blog for our site, because we've realized we need that middle of the funnel content.
Our issue has been taking up much of the developers' time & we're really working out the kinks with the system, so I'm trying to alleviate that with a light blog solution.
We're considering installing a wordpress site on a separate server from the main site & sending traffic over to that.
The primary questions:
- Do we negatively impact our main site by having a link to a different domain in the topnav?
- Do we positively impact the main site by developing SEO content on a redirected&masked URL?
- What are the ramifications of redirecting a subdomain to another server?
- Would we be better off using something like Ghost?
A good example would be:
Visit theMainDomain
Click: blog on topnav
Redirect to: theSecondDomain/blog [masked as theMainDomain/blog]
Click: home on topnav
Redirect to: theFirstDomain/blog -
Thank you for your responses to 1-3.
That gives me a lot of context for what we need to do to move forward.
Regarding 4, which is still a the outstanding question.
Ghost is a blog platform that we could install on the site in either a subfolder or a subdomain like blog.x.com or x.com/blog.

- Do we negatively impact our main site by having a link to a different domain in the topnav? - no, but it may not be optimum if the blog is not properly integrated into your main site. Just because something bad is unlikely to happen, that doesn't mean that keeping them separate is the best solution or the one which you could benefit most from. Lost opportunities, are also bad
- Do we positively impact the main site by developing SEO content on a redirected&masked URL? - Definitely not
- What are the ramifications of redirecting a subdomain to another server? - Not entirely sure but it sounds highly unusual and I would never guarantee that a project set up in such a way would rank well. Have seen quite a few people describing similar builds to us in Moz Q&A and they all seem to be complaining about lack of results
- Would we be better off using something like Ghost? - I don't know what that is sadly, many apologies

Plugins and SEO
I'd like some expert guidance. I've searched for a theme that does what I want and finally found something I like, but I'm wondering what you all think I should do to increase it's searchability. The plugin has all the listings and styling. All I need to do is past the code into the wordpress site ad voila! I have a page. Using the widget lets me allow upvotes and provide map etc. But it means the content is inside the widget instead of on the page. What would you modify if you wanted to keep the theme & widget to get the best results. http://best-of-sacramento.com/dentists This is my staging site.

Javascript redirects harmful for SEO?
Hi Mozzers, A website deals with some javascript redirects. After some research, It came clear a normal 301 is the best option, but javascript redirects can be useful if you don't have access to a website' server. Does anyone have experience with javascript redirects? Can they be harmful in any point of SEO? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Trailing Slashes and SEO
Hi, We're currently using a third party blog platform (Blog Engine) on our site and we have a trailing slash issue. I can add as many trailing slashes as I want to the blog's homepage URL, but they don't redirect and our dev guys say this cannot be done with Blog Engine. We're in the process of building our own blog but, in the meantime, I just wanted to know if this will cause an issue? Individual blog posts with trailing slashes are redirected, it's just the homepage where it can't be done. I haven't noticed any traffic going to a blog URL with trailing slashes, and I don't believe any URLs with trailing slashes are being indexed, so should this be OK? Cheers, Lewis

Multiple Subdomains, my worst seo mistake. now what should i do?
Hello Everyone, I have been running www.designzzz.com from lats 3 years now. and was doing extremely good with a PR 6 and 800K+ traffic monthly, but 6 months ago it started falling and falling badly.. now i am down to 350K total impressions :{ per month. I have been blaming penguin for this and been talking to google reps continously over it. they assured me that my site is not under any type of manual spam etc. Then i begin think and i realized taht was exactly the time when i launched a few subdomains as sub parts of my site like coding.designzzz.com , wordpress.designzzz.com , photograph.designzzz.com , shop.designzzz.com in the making... now is the part that i can't undo these subdomains.. what should i do ? my search traffic is almost killed. I seriously need insight on this guys : thanks in advance! Ayaz

Local SEO and Penguin
All, One of my client's sites was hit by Penguin. The business has lost almost all of its organic rankings but is still holding on for a handful of local searches for some of its satellite offices. We've built a new site and are slowly building domain authority. My question is this: at what point do I swap out the new site's location URL for the old URL in Google places? I don't want to risk the existing local placement which is all they have left for the time being. Thanks, John

SEO-MOZ bar question on root vs subdomain / canonicalization issues
When I look at the SEO-MOZ bar for our site and click next to subdomain (# links from #domains) it shows my main incoming links etc. but when I click on root domain ity shows mydomain/default.asp and 4 incoming links as well as a message that says this url redirects to another url. Does this imply canonicalization issues or is there a 301 redirect to my non /default.asp correcting this issue. Thanks kindly, Howard
