Something strange going on with new client's site...
-
Please forgive my stupidity if there is something obvious here which I have missed (I keep assuming that must be the case), but any advice on this would be much appreciated.
We've just acquired a new client. Despite having a site for plenty of time now they did not previously have analytics with their last company (I know, a crime!).
They've been with us for about a month now and we've managed to get them some great rankings already. To be fair, the rankings weren't bad before us either.
Anyway. They have multiple position one rankings for well searched terms both locally and nationally. One would assume therefore that a lot of their traffic would come from Google right?
Not according to their analytics. In fact, very little of it does... instead, 70% of their average 3,000 visits per month comes from just one referring site. A framed version of their site which is through reachlocal, which itself doesn't rank for any of their terms.
I don't get it...
The URL of the site is: www.namgrass.co.uk
(ignore there being a .com too, that's a portal as they cover other countries).
The referring site causing me all this confusion is: http://namgrass.rtrk.co.uk/
(see source code at the bottom for the reachlocal thing).
Now I know reach local certainly isn't sending them all that traffic, so why does GA say it is... and what is this reachlocal thing anyway?? I mean, I know what reachlocal is, but what gives here with regards to it?
Any ideas, please??
-
They're bidding on his brand name... so he's paying them for traffic he would have gotten anyway (as no ad would come up, he'd be the top results instead of the ad... or he could have the ad but run it himself).
I guess other than that it's no problem though... if it's sending him converting traffic. Just annoying I can't do much about the analytics, I can't see the keywords people are arriving with when they arrive through there, and ReachLocal won't share their data.
-
He said they were using someone for PPC, and that someone won't let me link the GA and Adwords accounts... that's all the info I could get on it. I assumed it was just normal PPC with another paranoid data hoarder though, not this stuff.
-
I used reach local at one point. It was all ppc traffic. Your client should know about this. It seems odd that if they are not paying reach local that reach local would continue to send them traffic.
-
The framed page is actually loading content from "namgrass-px.rtrk.co.uk" which could have been a dupe issue, but the are using a meta robots "noindex, nofollow" so I wouldn't be concerned since this should not appear in the search engine index.
Because of the framed referral issue, you should expect a 100% correlation between # of visits to ReachLocal page and # of visits in GA referral reports for that site. So if ReachLocal sends 1000 visits to that page, you'll see about 1000 in GA.
-
Thanks guys, I've just been looking into it and searched reach local on the internal search here... it seems to be as you say, reach local have made framed versions on the site which they use to send PPC traffic which they sell back to you.
Am I right in thinking that, as it's framed there is no possibility of dupe content issues?
Something (apart from the analytics) just seems wrong about it all.
Of the search terms, some are low traffic, but some are relatively high.

When the ReachLocal site loads the frame actually holding the site content, it will actually treat the parent window as the referral. If you look at the _utm.gif hit going to the Google Analytics servers, look at the utmr parameter (the referring URL that GA will recognize) it has a value of "http://namgrass.rtrk.co.uk/". Also, the utmz source/medium is set to "namgrass.rtrk.co.uk/referral" which is what you'll see in the Google Analytics reports.
So, what's happening is that the framed ReachLocal site IS getting traffic. It could be organic, email, PPC.... anything but we wouldn't know because the frames are dropping the real attribution and forcing a referral from namgrass.rtrk.co.uk. So, although the site may not be ranked, remember that it could get traffic through other means.
You can use tools like Fiddler or a Firefox extension called FireBug to monitor the Google Analytics _utm.gif hits and see what information is passed to the GA servers.
-
My guess is that a lot of that traffic is paid for by advertising, either online or offline. Reachlocal will do things like frame a site in their system to track incoming traffic from a particular ad or campaign. They'll also use unique phone numbers to track conversions by phone. So if your client has a significant advertising budget this could explain why lots of their traffic arrives this way.
If the keywords they rank for are really low traffic keywords, this would add some more weight to my guess. If not, back to the drawing board? Is there anything else unusual about their setup that may provide clues?

How can you tell if Google has already assessed a penalty against your site for spammy links?
Is there any way to tell for sure if there is a penalty? My client has a ton of low quality back links, and I think they are in danger of a Penguin penalty. Any way to know? The links are there for a business reason.... their clients mention them in the footer, with a backlink. It is not a link scheme. but folks are generally not clicking on a footer link, and so there is a pro/con of leaving it as it. Any way, to diagnose whether a Penguin penalty has already hit?

The client's website serves as the main referral?
Hi mozzers, I have this weird case where one of my client's first referral is its own website!! I am really confused especially that I have checked there www vs non www and the non www is redirected to the www. This means that it resolve to one version which is good! Any thoughts on why the main referral is its own site? Thanks

Changed URL's, traffic dropped from 2k week to 1K week. Need advice!
Hi Mozers, I recently changed my URLs for my ecommerce site and my traffic went from 2,000 visitors a week to 1,000 visitors a week, over a 3 week period. Traffic is down, so are unique Kwds. I need advice on why this happened and what I should do moving forward. To brief, I have a ecommerce website, www.ecustomfinishes.com. I noticed pattern that a lot of my URLs with a unique URL structure (URL.Com/ProductDescription/ProductName) were getting a lot of entrances ~30-50 a month, and others that followed the path of my subcategory (URL.com/SubCat/Product) were getting 0-3 entrances a month. The seo pattern was that those with unique product URLs were hitting long tail Kwds, and those URLs with /subcategory/product were getting far less traffic. I changed 150 or so urls to be unique. Good idea, I thought. Since then: CON: Since then my traffic dropped from 2200 visitors a week to 1100 visitors a week. -25% week to week, over 3 weeks CON: # of non-paid keywords sending visits: -25% week to week, over 3 weeks PRO: my Urls receiving entrances +10% week to week, over 3 weeks REF: http://imgur.com/GwZT8 Question: What are your best suggestions moving forward? Any advice is much appreciated, Thank you!!! abBN3

Why did my site go from 1,000 Impressions to 0 impressions over the past couple days
so we have been doing a lot of reconstruction our website the past couple days with our navigation and moving stuff around. Now bare with me because i am a noob to SEO and i am still learning. But we went from a steady 800-1000 impressions everyday to a 0 since the first. you can check out our site here: www.hidguy.net Not sure if its because we are moving stuff around or what. But we can notice that our conversion rate has dropped and we have had traffic but no conversions and no orders. Is what we are doing bad or is this normal?

Can't figure this ranking out..
Hi, This is puzzling me. I've been in the second/third position for a week or so for my best keyword. That is for Google US unpersonalized, which is the one that brings more traffic, as far as I understand. It can't get MUCH better. Well, I can be first, but second and third position is really awesome in my case (highly competitive keyword according to SEOMOZ PRO). Then, why on earth my traffic for that keyword was 8 times better a year ago?? I mean, a year ago I received an average of 800 visits per day and now I can barely reach 90 visits per day being in the second / third place. Visits can't increase from 90 to 800 just for increasing one spot. I've never seen in my stats such drop in my rankings. I thought that due to google updates my site was sent below the 20th position or something. But my I was shocked today when I saw that I still have the second/third position Am I crazy or this looks wrong? The page title and description that shows in google hasn't changed, so people looking for that keyword are seeing the same as one year ago. It is not a seasonal or time sensitive keyword. My best guess is that people are now always logged in and results are personalized. Don't know much about personalized results but I don't think you can optimize much for those. If that's the case, then how on earth can we optimize a page if everybody is using personalized results? Is there a way to improve your rankings in those cases? Thanks, Enrique

Statistics, R, and You: Advice for a New Analyst?
Hey SEOMozers! Two prongs to this question; I'll keep it succinct. I've been working as an in-house SEO/SEM Analyst for about 5 months now. While I'm generally savvy at telling the story behind the traffic/conversion data, and making forensic recommendations (I worked in SEO prior to this while in college), ideally I'd like to see my reports read less like these piddly Excel charts and percent change statistics. Ideally they'd look more like Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight blog for the New York Times, or OkCupid's periodic dispatches on OkTrends: visual, statistically-informed, and predictive, the kind of report that under other circumstances might plausibly generate backlinks. Data analysts swear by R for statistical modeling, but is it useful for our Google Analytics data sets, holes and uncertainty and all? Is the steep learning curve worth the effort? Tutorials I've seen online assume a proficiency in programming or statistics that's beyond me, or they're written to support a textbook exercise. Any recommendations for a book, online course, or general resource with more of a niche focus? And a general question about stats too, since it's related: what level would you prescribe if I really wanted to kick this up a notch? I studied a humanity in college and while it helps with the numerical storytelling, I wonder if the practical arcana of Bayesian Methods/abstract probability theorems have a place in Web Analytics. Do they? Are there options for us bushy-tailed young analysts to pick this up without resorting to B School? Thanks in advance!
