Why do hallmarks from web design companies carry so much ranking weight for the recipient website?

Website designers/developers place hallmarks (Website Designed by XXXX) in the footer region of the web sites they have designed/built, how much ranking value do these hallmarks have being that they're pointing from sites that are irrelevant to the web designer's, and why?

Hey there Chris, thanks for contributing. I agree with everything you said, but something seems to be amiss with what's going on. There's the "should be", if we go by Google, and there's the "what is", when we look at how things really play out in the real world of ranking.
I don't want to beat a dead horse, the subject has been brought up many times before on how so many websites seem to get away with what appears to be blunt infractions of Google's rules, but in all honesty, I never before had to consider hallmarks as a competing factor, I don't even know how they're perceived by search engines.
How would a website designer who builds high quality sites but in small numbers compete with a designer who spits out low quality sites in high numbers? Should hallmarks be a contributing factor? Do they have a rightful place in influencing rank?

What brought this topic to a head was a call I received from a friend who just happens to be a website designer. To simplify things let's call my friend Joe. Joe is a high-end website designer who builds an average of three to four websites a year, and despite what may seem to be a small number of sites, he makes a pretty good living. Joe's designs reflects this artistry and in addition to being a great designer he also as an eye for information architecture. He uses illustrators photographers, and content writers who are on top of their game, so most of his creations are co-produced. His own website/domain is about 7 years old and though classy and well structured, competitor websites of lesser quality and substance are always out ranking Joe's site, so I did a competitive analysis to see what was going on.
In examining Joe's competitors, I looked at other probable ranking variables and found the hallmarks as being the major contributing factor to their superior ranking in comparison to Joe's website. Joe guards his links and is very selective when it comes to giving and receiving links. Surprisingly, Joe doesn't use hallmarks. When I asked him about not using hallmarks Joe replied that it wouldn't be in good taste considering his clients' stature, and I agree.
Obviously the placement of the hallmarks is assumptive on the designer's behalf, meaning that they were placed on the host sites probably without the direct approval or acknowledgement of the client, a common practice among web designers, so they're not really earned links by definition (merit). I too share the opinion that website designers who place hallmarks on the sites they create without disclosure or grant are taking advantage of their clients as well as taking advantage of a linking scheme available only to them, website designers. I mean, what other industry or practice on the Internet gets to use and benefit from hallmarks as a ranking factor?

Hello Moosa, thank you for your answer. Case studies in our lab show that both Panda and Penguin have fallen short of what they were supposedly programmed to do - meaning that despite the placement of exact anchor text throughout multiple sites, (hundreds) and on multiple pages of a site, Google's algorithm updates, Panda and Penguin , are apparently failing to devalue their ranking influence. Here's an excerpt from Google Webmaster Tools regarding Link Schemes...
"Your site's ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links influences your ranking. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity."
I guess with a comment like the one above you can read whatever you want into it. The part that says, "site's that link to you" implies the act of willingly giving a citation. Another is "relevance", if I'm a web designer and put my hallmark on a biochemistry site I built, how is biochemistry (health care, construction, pharmacy, etc) relevant to web design? I don't get it.
Can it be that Google and other search engines give web design sites and their hallmarks special consideration?

I've often wondered if these designers inform their customers that random outbound links on their webpages may affect their search rankings.
Website designers who place hallmarks in the footer section of sites they create, in my opinion are taking advantage of non-tech savvy clients. Years ago, it probably was a much bigger benefit to the designer, than it is today with the algo changes. But, it probably still bears some weight.

Semantically the links in the footer should have to have lowest value but after the panda and penguin update same link in the footer of multiple website may question the quality of link and anchor text.
I think it’s good to have a link from few websites but having link from every website they made with same or slightly varied anchor text might hurt the overall link profile instead of providing benefits.

There may be value in the domain diversity that they provide. There's no need to put them on more than a page or two of the client's site. The fact that they're in the footer reduces their value. the fact that they're on irrelevant websites reduces their value. That many web design firms hammer on the exact match anchor text may be the worst thing about most of them.
Be modest in how many you put on the client's site and diversify your anchor text and you'll be OK.

Should harmful links to your own website be removed?
Upon running a link report on a website, there are often multiple links flagged as bad or suspect that come from a blog that is integrated into the website, which means there are links (set up as article tags) in the site that go to other pages in the same site. They have likely been flagged due to their high frequency. A similar problem is occurring where blogs from a connected site (from an offshoot site of a company that is part of the original) are also tagging their blog posts to link into the original website. Should these links be disavowed? Will these links have an effect on the website if they are disavowed or not?

What happened to my ranking
Hi trying to rank for "liverpool wedding photographer" as my main keyword. my profile is mainly wedding blogs and photography blog comments, a few "featured weddings" from wedding blogs , directory links and I have also a few guest post blogs. Goy myself all excited in December by getting to 4th position and then followed that up by around 35 links in one week. So expecting my ranking to stabilise or even go up I watched my site slowly sink to a current position of 7th, over January, even as the new links kicked in. a weird thing happened in this period as the following sites where I had left one comment on a blog post ended up giving me links from nearly all the other posts they had written: http://www.richardbernabe.com/blog/2012/12/04/iceland-bound-again/ http://blog.leica-camera.com/2014/12/03/andrew-kaufman-documenting-the-disappearing-street-art-of-wynwood/ http://jnack.com/blog/2015/01/04/when-will-wearable-cameras-be-a-thing/ webmaster tools is indicating I have 374 links from the leica site, 174 links from the richardbernabe site and 77 from the njack one. They are all different blog posts! I have disavowed all three domains. Can anyone explain what has caused this multiplication of links from these particular sites? Why do the best ranking websites not seem to follow SEO best practice, particularly in terms of link building?
I work for an online retailer, which predominantly sells perfume products. In recent months, we have been spending more and more time on SEO, particularly in terms of improving our content, and as part of our strategy we have been working with beauty bloggers in particular (independent reviews, articles etc) to increase the number of links to our website. Whilst we’ve seen steady improvements, we are concerned that some of the key words/phrases we are targeting still aren’t ranking as high as we would like. Some weeks they will move up a few places, but more often than not, they will then move back down. We are more frustrated as we are seeing other websites, which are much poorer in terms of quality content, number of products, etc., ranking quite highly for these terms. From analysing these sites, it seems they are achieving their high ranking from having a considerable number of what appear to be poor quality links. We have been warned countless times to avoid link farms, etc., yet these sites have 100s even 1000s of links coming from suspect sites and it isn’t doing them any harm. Recently, we noticed a lot of our competitors are receiving links from websites such as LinkPartners. When we checked the website, we could see that whilst it appears to be a fairly SPAMMY website, its domain authority (67) is actually quite high. Should we base our decision about whether or not to place a link somewhere solely on how high their domain authority is, i.e. would it be more beneficial to us to have a link with what appears to be a link farm if their domain authority is high, than what appears to be a fantastic independent beauty blog with a low domain authority? Or should we avoid these sites whatever the circumstances? It’s slightly confusing for us as we are being warned about placing links on websites as google is apparently going to penalise us for it, but then we see our rival sites doing well by simply placing links everywhere they can.

PR web anchor text
We are submitting a press release today for a contest we are doing and it is actually news worth compared to a lot of things on PR web. Our question is PRweb.com still worth using? If we use them should we put an anchor text in it? We have one link to our home page and one to the contest page and we were going to have one link to a different page. But will linking to the third page with an anchor text be to much?

Is there a tool to find out our website's link in some other website?
sometimes we know our site link is there on a site but the site is so big its hard to search manually. Is there any tool which can crawl the whole site and find the page having our site link ? though I know about OSE, and we can also see backlinks from webmaster tool. But still if you know any tool where instead of seeing the whole back link profile, we can add a specific url and see our site link in that url.

How to Get Links as A Web Host
As a web hosting provider how would you get links other than people writing reviews about you? How would I find people with actual websites/blogs to ask to write reviews about us? Current customers will usually write reviews on webhostingtalk.com a popular forum for web hosting. We already have plenty of links from forums in the industry. Giving out prizes will only result in more links from webhostingtalk.com presumably, what do you think?

Photography Site ranking!
Hi I am working on a photography site: www.daffodilwaves.co.uk now there isn't many pages nor is the that much text. However you will see that they have a blog (poorly designed one which we are addressing) Now blog posts I feel can be really good as there is generally alot of naturally written text which I don't feel I need to influence. Also generally people will comment so I also believe that is good for rankings too. However I find that the blog ranks higher than the actual website and I dont want that to occur the website is the one that generates the bookings. So can you give me some ideas to transfer the ranking from the blog to the website? I was thinking that within the article I could simply link back to the homepage - would you think that is a good idea? If so would you suggest I use particular anchor text? such as "Wedding Photographer" or "Comtemporary wedding Photographer" Thanks

Thoughts on a particular company -- Paying for Links
Any thoughts on using companies like Text Link Ads (www.textlinkads.com) to do link building? Seems a bit dangerous to me, but if the articles are decent and relevant -- can it hurt you? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. MM
