Listings, paid profiles and directories
-
Hi,
In the industry I am working in (education), we do have a lot of portals offering paid listings (for example profiles featuring a school, the courses you offer, sometimes with reviews etc).
Almost all big competitors and big names normally do have these kind of listings.
Besides from having to decide if these sites really bring the relevant conversions, I am wondering about their impact on SEO.
An example for an offer:
Our Top Picks listing is a 40 word listing and logo we put on any 30 pages of our web site, example.com for 12 months, for $595 US. You can choose the pages you want, or we can put you on all our [category] pages, or certain continents/countries you want to target. Now, I am wondering:
- Do I have to worry about my linking profile ? (All of sudden a bunch of links with the exact same anchortext and content embedding to our site?)
- Or can I just decide to go with a paid listing based on the link value the page offers me?
Looking forward to reading what you think!
Nicole -
They don't use nofollow, so this would be all regular links.
If we have a huge partnership, we would suddenly have links from more than 70 sites
all using the same anchortext. -
Ah, I see. Many of those school review sites and forums charge users to access them, and I see they want to charge you to post your profile. If this is the case, you might want to check to see how other links show up to search engines. Just try a few searches with the exact anchor text seen in these sites to see where the pages come up in SERPs. This would be a good way to quickly gauge the value of your links from this site. Make sure you're logged out of Goolge, Yahoo, Bing, etc. before searching.
Now these are not paid links per se. You can read up about nofollow at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=96569 and then judge for yourself if these sites are breaking any rules, so to speak.

Hi Kevin,
thanks for your answer.
You write that I should focus on pages where relevant visitors are likely to go.
I think I can assume that these kind of websites are at least somehow relevant concerning the topic (since this is for example all about school reviews or helping students finding the right school)? Therefore the links are at least to some extend "justified".
But I think that these are kind of "hidden paid links", so I am not too happy about them and afraid that they will rather hurt our website in the long run.

Hi Nicole. Really, you should focus on whether or not those links will bring traffic to your site. I would rather spend that kind of money on an adword campaign that targets visitors much more effectively than that offer you posted above. I assume by "embedding to our site" that you mean linking to your site, and when a bunch of sites start linking to your site with that anchor text, this tends to bring up the key words within that text in the SERPs, granted these sites are legitimate and of value. You're in a very competitive industry, so I wouldn't recommend chasing pages like this. Stay focused on the business and target the sites that your visitors are more likely to go to. It's far more time consuming, but the results will show to be far more lucrative than higher numbers here on SEOmoz.

Are Directory links relevant?
What are everyone's thoughts on directory links now a days? I'm talking about the old tried and true ones, like Yahoo directory and DMOZ? We had previously been on a couple and removed the links, thinking it was hurting us. But we've been falling in rankings for a while now, and I'm trying to think of some ways to bring us back up (even if they're small). Do you think it would be worth it to be added back in? Anyone's thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Can 302's Negate Spam Link Profile?
To make a long story short, the previous SEO company we hired spammed us on LOTS of crappy links, many of which are still indexed. We're currently in the act of removing these links before we receive a manual spam penalty/notification + building new, stronger links to balance out our profile. While most of these garbage links were sent to our homepage, many are linking our Services page (and a bunch to our .com/sitemap.html for some reason, lol). Now we're in the midst of updating our entire website and the permalinks are going to change. While I'd normally 301 our old links to the new ones, Id rather not bring the horrible link profile with it if at all possible. Would a simple 302 redirect effectively dodge the bad juju from these spam links to our Services page since they pass 0 juice? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

★Does syndication of a news features from high Profile site like TechCrunch have a negative SEO impact?
As a co-founder of a startup that is weekly featured on high page rank news sites such as TechCrunch, The Next Web, TreeHugger , Yahoo News etc. These types of write ups are "SEO Gold" as they are high page rank sites with high relevancy to our sector and with unique good quality anchor text and copy. However... Within hours of each post going live the content and links are syndicated either via RSS or scraped and appear as duplicate content on in some cases 100's of very low quality and low relevancy content aggregation sites. To give you an example here are just two of the sites that are now appearing as linking domains due to this syndicated content and the links included in the article. Examples : Eco Market, The “Etsy For Eco,” Rebrands, Revamps, Raises & Prepares A U.S. Launch Sarah Perez | Technology | Page 4 The above are just a couple of examples amongst 100's that result from each feature. I would like to hear you opinion on if these links would be considered natural and you feel I should not take action or if you think these need removing by contacting the webmasters or disavowing the links? I am sure I cant be alone in having this problem and look forward to hearing you advice and tips

Back to Basics: Lets talk link directories :)
Hi, Ok, bit of a muddy subject for me because lots say it's a good method, great for getting things started and some say it's a complete waste of time and it's spammy. But I guess the difference between the two opinions is quality! I have stopped using directories but think it's time to add some diversity to my link profile. In the past I have used this - http://www.directorycritic.com/free-directory-list.html What are your thoughts on that list? Does it actually fall into the spammy category and I should be looking for a much higher quality list. Cheers

What's your favourite SEO directory?
We're having a bit of a debate in the office today about SEO directories. We all seem to have our favourites here - Octopedia, AbiLogic and JoeAnt to name a few that have been mentioned. Just wondering what everyone else's favourite directories for SEO are? Which pass the best link juice? Which offer the best value for money? Would love to know everyone's thoughts...
