For a real estate website, is a different mobile site warranted vs a responsive site?
-
I researched the major real estate websites: Zillow, Trulia, Remax, Keller Williams, Century 21, etc. They all have a separate mobile site and not a responsive one. The client wants it to be easy to search for properties from a smartphone. Is it possible to get a responsive version of a real estate website on a smartphone?
-
Hey Melissa,
Many large websites choose to create separate mobile sites rather than using responsive design because they don't want to change the main version of the site (often because they've built a mobile website team that doesn't have any say in the activities of the primary website team). Don't use that fact to shy away from responsive design.
I generally recommend responsive. There are very few things that responsive designs can't do. Namely, you can't have different content on your mobile site than you do on your desktop site. Do you want your mobile site to be a mini version of your desktop site? Then you can probably make it responsive. You can definitely create a responsively designed site that allows you to search for properties easily.
Hope this helps!
Kristina

He means, yes, it's possible to create a responsive site.

Hi Melissa,
I'm assuming you are designing a mobile-friendly version of your client's real estate website. If that's the case, it would certainly be preferable to go for a responsive design. The main reason for this is SEO. Responsive designs maintain the same URL, which keeps your "SEO juice" regardless of whether visitors are viewing your website on mobile phones or on computers.
Mobile versions of websites are created before the concept of responsive web design was fully established, and it is my guess that other real estate websites developed mobile sites long before responsive versions are mainstream. As such, it would be a good idea to develop a responsive design for your client now, to differentiate his website from others in the same niche.
Moreover, responsive design caters to all screen sizes within one CSS version, while mobile versions can only cater to one screen size. Given the variety of screen sizes throughout new and old smartphones/tablets, it would be unimaginable to create mobile versions to suit all of them.
That being said, there are considerations to be made as mentioned by Bede. You would need to ensure the backend of your client's site is suitable for easy & quick loading on mobile phones and tablets. Otherwise, a responsive design wouldn't help at all.

Are the property listings part of your client's site, or are they hosted elsewhere? Many realtors send visitors to a separate third-party website that is then branded for the realtor.
If the listings are hosted on your client's site, then yes, it's possible to use responsive design. A responsive site is just a site that is set up to display content in different ways (e.g. different format, and potentially showing and hiding certain parts) based on things like screen width or resolution.
Whether a responsive site or a mobile version is the best solution depends on your business goals and how visitors are likely to use the site. You'll need to consider things like common site activities (beyond just searching for listings), how page-load time is likely to impact those activities, and what features you need for mobile vs. desktop.
As far as I'm aware, Google's "Recommended configuration" is still responsive, and it's a personal preference when I'm developing a site, but you also need to think about the implications for users.
-
Kevin, Do you mean 'yes, it's possible to create a responsive mobile site' or do you mean 'yes, it should be a separate mobile site'?
-
Yes, it's dictated in the css (and how the individual pages are coded). Look up fluid-grid concept.

Migrating login page from website: SEO impact
Our current login page looks like www.website.com/log-in/. We are planning to migrate it to a sub directory login.website.com. For years, our login page is the top landing with highest visits after homepage. If we migrate this now, are we going to loose traffic and drop in rankings? Thanks

New ecommerce site: Close old site and full domain redirect or keep it linking to new site?
We have rebranded and are working on our new site (B). Our old site (A) has a much higher domain/page authority than our new site. Currently we have the original Site A still there, with all links/pages pointing to the new Site B when people click. I am unsure whether we'd be best to close down the Site A completely and do a full domain redirect to Site B. Site A: 10 years age and has a moderate amount of links to it.

Homepage - PA: 24 DA:11 Site B: 6 months age, few links
Homepage - PA: 1 DA:2 My concern with the full domain redirect is that the indexed/ranking pages would dissapear. The benefit is less brand confusion for our niche range of party accessories.0 -
Using a 301 vs. 302?
I'm running into a very confusing situation - and while I think I've worked through the answer, I'm hoping someone can help provide their insight. I have a client who is in the process of rolling out a responsive site. Because we need to host both Responsive and legacy versions of product pages on the domain we are using the following URL pattern. New Responsive Product Page exampleurl.com/product (existing URL structure) Older Product Pages (redirected to) exampleurl.com/legacy/product The rollout will be approximately 2 months to complete. The question becomes - should a 302 redirect be applied from the existing URl to the /legacy/ URLs until the new designs are launched? Given that the timing will be so short this seems reasonable. Or should a 301 be applied until the new responsive designs are rolled out?

Entering different but related industry, keep it on the same domain or new domain?
We rank well across many online furniture keywords within google.ie here in Ireland, this is our core business and it is successful. Now we want to branch out into the related field of "kitchens". So the question is do we setup a new domain (a sister site) or keep it on the same domain with a new sub category. So the main categories off the home page would be: Sofas Bedroom Furniture Dining Furniture Kitchens I know all the benefits of keeping to the one domain (the domain has age, and already has DA of 30 with many landing pages with PA from 30 to 49), so for the short term SEO angle keep it on the same domain. But from a Branding perspective this is not a great approach. Is it better to have a dedicated domain/site for kitchens (and the bonus of having a keyword match in the domain)? We are always thinking longer term so we see this as a 3 year plan outwards rather than a get rich quick. There is an additional overhead of course with managment of the domain, templates SSL, PCI etc etc and we are conscious that a new domain is not a easy route to success. Looking at the top 10 for the main keywords within the "kitchen" keyword cloud most if not all are dedicated kitchen sites, or kitchens are the main business so their homepage is there kitchens landing page. The competition in the google.ie space have 20-30 DA and PAs roughly 30 being the highest DA, we are thinking that this has not a huge challenge to overcome? Thanks for any help, assistance or comments really appreciated. Ware regards, Eunan @ Love Furniture

Meta author. Is it relevant for website design company in its seo?
We don't usually add the meta author in the websites that we develop. I wonder if it would have any positive effect in our seo. We usually add a link in the footer like this "Diseño Web Vigo "(Website Development in Vigo). I am worry about this links. I'm not sure if they are positive because they are in the footer and so the link appears in all of the pages. Besides all these websites we develop are hosted in two different servers, and google could easily think that it is manipulative thing. What do you think? Thanks!!! 🙂
