Do links in hosted documents help with domain authority?
-
When giving presentations in our industry, we often find that the PDF or PPT document is then hosted on the origination's domain for download by event attendees. If these files have links, do they count as inbound followed links?
-
Great answer. I've seen some old PDFs on some .gov and .edu domains, but unfortunately, there were no URL links.

Yes, absolutely.
You can find links from .ppt .pdf .xls .doc and many other types of document files in your Google Webmaster tools account.
In addition, those documents accumulate PageRank and pass it. I have some PR6 .pdf documents. You can also optimize their document properties so that they will compete in the SERPs with a title tag of your choice.
If you publish these types of files, always put an attribution link to your website and don't hesitate to link to content on your website where it would be useful to readers.
If you are clever you can even place "Add to Cart" buttons in these documents.
I got into a Panda problem because I had a lot of duplicate content in .pdf documents - to control the scale and appearance of printed graphics. I was able to use .htaccess to apply rel=canonical to the .pdf documents and attribute them to specific html pages.
These documents can do just about anything that a webpage can do if you are clever.

Subdomain with higher domain authority vs. ccTLD with lower domain authority
Our website is active in many countries and we are considering if it is worth it to switch from ccTLD to subdomains. The reason is that our company.com domain has a domain authority of 65 and some of the ccTLD's like company.fr and company.de etc have a domain authority of 30. From what I have read, moving these to a subdomain structure like fr.company.com and de.company.com will give them all the same domain authority (of 65 vs 30) which is considerably higher. 1. Would a subdomain with domain authority 65 rank better than a ccTLD with authority 30 (considering all else is the same)? 2. When we 301 redirect all ccTLD's to the subdomains, will our domain authority increase (to more than 65) for company.com, given that it can benefit from all redirected links to our ccTLD's? Thanks in advance!

Penguin Recover: Remove links vs Burry Links
The best is to do both. However with those with limited resources, would building more links with branded and naked URL anchor links be a better solution than painstakingly asking every webmaster to remove links.

Do links within imbeddable widgets carry link juice?
I'm dipping my toes into infographic design. On of my desired outcomes is to gain links by having other sites embed my graphic. I'm considering using Tableau's interactive data visualization software to do so; thus creating a widget, embedding it on my blog, and including the embed code for others to post. Is it possible to include a juice passing link in such an infographic? I know its possible to include links inside the tableau graphic but not sure if they have straight SEO value. If these links are not juice passing would it be better to go with a simple image link that passes value?

New ways to get links (excluding on site link bait)?
Fellow SEOs, I’m looking for a new way to reach out to bloggers and site owners for links. There are quite a few link bait techniques to lure bloggers thanks to = amazing content, infographics,...but there are not so many articles on ways to contact bloggers/webmasters and ask for links... We all know that contacting site owners directly and politely asking then to place a link on their home page is as useful as a comb in Bruce willis’s hand. Link exchange is as dead as the Dodo and business partner links are usefull and easier to get but opportunities are often limited. I have been organizing contests for bloggers recently and it has been quite successful up to now, but I always like to have a spare trick up my sleeve. So if any of you have a decent method to reach out to bloggers/webmaster and get decent links please let me know, I will be forever thankful ; ) Cheers
