Merging two existing company sites into one
-
Hi Moz community,
I have recently started a new job for a Fire & Security company in the UK to help with their non existent SEO efforts.
Currently they have two separate websites. One of the websites is for their services and the other website is for their eCommerce store selling fire alarm equipment etc.
The eCommerce store is higher up in the SERPs and overall has a lot more links. It also uses a better branded domain name.
As I have never attempted such a project I have a few questions.
The current eCommerce store is hosted and maintained by another web company which uses their bespoke CMS. What I want to do is take the service website and merge it with the ecommerce domain, however the service site runs on wordpress, which I want to continue for its flexibility.
The service page wants to be the new homepage with a link on it to go to the store. I just cant get my head around the whole operation so if anyone could give me some advice to point me in the right direction that would be great.
Thanks

Thanks for the help Nick.

Howdy,
Why not just make the store store.fireCompany.com and the main landing page just fireCompany.com. You could keep the bespoke CMS if you don't want to tackle changing the store that way and use wordpress or whatever you prefer for the corporate/service page. 301 the old pages in your .htaccess file to the new address. Basically you'd just be moving the store content from AwesomeFireDomain to store.AwesomeFireDomain and the less popular service stuff over to AwesomeFireDomain. You'd have to make sure not to duplicate names with the whole 301 deal. And your homepage on AwesomeFireDomain might lose some juice temporarily because the content may be less SEO friendly than what was there.
You could also go the other way with this which is even easier by doing corporate.AwesomeFireDomain.com and just leaving the store alone. I'm always weary of mucking around with a domain and site that is producing.
That's just how I would handle it. I'm sure some SEO pro will have a quicker, easier answer for you!

Site Not Ranking- No Reason Why
I have a client with a HUGE website who should be ranking for it's competitive keywords. No penalties, or bad links. Old domain. Not ranking for anything. Client has a huge AdWords spend and my theory is that it's not ranking organically because of the AdWords spend. I can't think of anything other reason. Anyone? Thanks. The keywords I'm trying to rank this client for aren't even competitive.

URL mapping for site migration
Hi all! I'm currently working on a migration for a large e-commerce site. The old one has around 2.5k urls, the new one 7.5k. I now need to sort out the redirects from one to the other. This is proving pretty tricky, as the URL structure has changed site wide. There doesn't seem to be any consistent rules either so using regex doesn't really work. By and large, the copy appears to be the same though. Does anybody know of a tool I can crawl the sites with that will export the crawled url and related copy into a spreadsheet? That way I can crawl both sites and compare the copy to match them up. Thanks!

Sitemap for SmartPhone site
Hello I have a smartphone site (e.g.m.abc.com). To my understanding we do not need a mobile sitemap as its not a traditional mobile site. Shall I add those mobile site links in my regular www XML sitemap or not bother to add the links as we already have rel = canonical (on m.abc.com ) and rel= alternate in place (on www site) to respective pages. Please suggests a solution. I really look forward to an answer as I haven't found the "official" answer to this question anywhere.

Why are our sites top landing pages URL's that no longer exist and retrun 404 errors?
Digging through analytics today an noticed that our sites top landing pages are for pages that were part of the old www.towelsrus.co.uk website taken down almost 12 months ago. All these pages had the 301 re-directs which were removed a few months back but still have not dropped out of Googles crawl error logs. I can't understand why this is happening but almost certainly the bounce rate on these pages (100%) mean we are loosing potential conversions. How can I identify what keywords and links people are using to land on these pages?

3 results for a site on page one?!?
Hi, I've never seen a website rank on page 1 in position 2, 3 and 4 for one query, completely separate results as well. I thought they limited the amount of results from a website on each page?
