When/ What Links to Disavow?

We have an older website started in 2000. We have thousands of backlinks which we believe are hurting us. Starting with Panda our site has been devastated, traffic wise, from a million + page views a month to 1/3 of that now. We've never solicited links, never paid for them, they just happened. It seems every "search engine" and spammy site on the web has links to us. Hundreds if not thousands from sites like , 29searchengines.com, 55 searchengines.net, and on and on..
1. How does a site know when the links are harmful?
2. How do you know which links should be disavowed?Thank you

I'm going to answer with 2 separate and very excellent blog posts that can answer the question much better than I can:

There are also a number of automated tools out there link Link Detox, but a manual review is always necessary before disavowing links.
Also keep in mind that although Panda might have some backlink elements baked in as part of the algorithm, most people consider Panda to be mostly caused by on-site issues, such as duplicate content. You may want to do a bit of digging into recovering from Panda penalties, including removing thin and duplicate content, and improving on site experiences, before removing links.

Unfortunate but the truth is if you do not have many of authority links, these low quality links and directories will hurt your link profile and you might see a decline in traffic or worst case Google will manually penalize you!
How does a site know when the harmful links point back to my website? No easy game, do check your links at least on monthly basis and if you find any low quality spammy link then update the disavow file accordingly.
You can check the recent links by Open Site Explorer’s Just Discovered or Ahrefs New Links!
How do you know which links should be disavowed? Now thats a real question and a tough one! Well the easy answer to that is buy a link disavow tool like link risk or link detox and they will tell you what links are bad but as per my experience it’s not like they are always right all the time, so you should have to have some manual indicators.
Here are mine
- Links from Blog Comments (wow, what a great site… type of comments), Forum links, Press Release Links are all usually give a negative juice so this is one of the indicator, when you see these kind of link, either remove the link or update the link in the disavow file.
- Check their domain Moz trust and Google PR.
- Check their link profile and see from where they are getting links. If their link profile is nasty consider disavowing them.
- Paid Links
- Irrelevant links

Panda Target content, does your website has a lot of pages with very little content? Like less than 300 words?
If you were hit by Panda you have to improve your website content. I noticed that a lot of small eCommerce websites had problems with Panda not because the site had bad content but because in Google eyes the site didn't have enough unique content.
I didn't look at your site, but my intuition says that you don't have links issue.

2. The traffic drops have pretty much coincided with Panda in 2011 and with every change they've just dropped further and further. We've not had any site changes to speak of since 2008.
3. My sense is links are one issue but I suspect there are others. -
1 - Do you have any notice on Google Webmaster?
2 - Do you see any huge traffic drop on GA? In the last year? If yes, you should check if there was any know Google update around that time. http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change
ps: A big drop on traffic can be also cause by technical issues, so you should also check if your site had any big update in the time the traffic drooped. (for example a cms change)
If you dont have any traffic drop or notice on GWT, I would recommend you not disavow any link.... If you see a traffic drop you have to do a link audit and conduct a link removal campaign..

Why does GWT still show some links from a disavowed domain?
We have disavowed a lot of spam links that were pointing to our website. We've disavowed on a domain level and a lot of links have now disappeared on GWT. However, there is a domain that we disavowed where MOST of the links have disappeared in GWT but there are STILL some remaining even a month and a half after disavowing. The disavow file has been sent in numerous times since then with new domains. Is there an explanation as to why some links still remain on this domain even though most of them have been disavowed and removed from GWT?

I am getting links on people's wordpress blogs but are not showing up on the just discovered tool. Is it true that wordpress links are no-follow links that do give off any link-juice?
A blogger told me that "wordpress.com does not allow blogs to show advertisements or use links to sites that sell merchandise of any kind" is this true? Am i wasting my outreach time trying to get links from wordpress operated blogs?

Reciprocal links
I've heard that reciprocal links don't count anymore. If i stop linking to a person that links to me, will that link to my website start counting? Do reciprocal links count at all in google? Anchor text? anything? Thanks in advance! Ron

Which Links to Disavow!
We just took over SEO for a new client who is being penalized for a bad link profile. They've asked Google to reconsider multiple times, and Google still claims that the links are bad. Because of this, and because I don't have direct access (logins, etc.) to what the former SEO did, I am considering using the disavow links tool. The most obvious links to disavow are a group of almost 1000 links that come from the same forum. However, when viewing the links on this forum they actually seem natural. People are reviewing the product (ipod cases), both negatively and positively. While this could have been an SEO tactic for link building, I don't want to disavow these links if they're not the problem, even though this domain is the source of almost all the low-quality links. Another site that has more than 200 links is Askives. Do any of you have experience with links from Askives, or removing these links? Thanks again!

Thoughts on using the disavow tool for removed links?
Our website has been penalized by Google for the past few months due to unnatural links. We have spent the past 2 months submitting link removal requests to the domain owners with success. However, the Google Webmaster Tools "links to site" has not updated the list. I understand that they update the list of links as they crawl the website, but it has been 6-8 weeks on a lot of them (mostly our biggest offenders). We attempted to send a reconsideration request anyways, hoping Google would see that even though it is still listed, the link isn't actually there. We received a response that it is still in violation, but I believe it is because the webmaster tools links have not updated and perhaps this is what they go off of. Would you recommend submitting these domains to the disavow tool even though our link has already been removed for the past 6-8 weeks? Or even just listing them with the "#" comment tag so they can see they had been removed? Or would you continue waiting for it to update? Of course, we would like the penalty removed as soon as possible and were concerned that the list hadn't removed these websites the past 6-8 weeks our link had been removed. Example: This domain shows we have 3,397 within this website. It was an affiliate that had this URL forwarding to our pages: http://www.binet.lv/go.pl?PID=49276714O2422 . This no longer forwards to our webpage and the affiliate has been expired, but the GWT still shows them at the top of the links list. I also noticed a lot of sites left the links up, but added the nofollow attribute. These are still coming up in the Links list and does not decipher between which do and do not have nofollow. Could the spammy sites with our links as nofollow still be hurting us? Thanks for any help and recommendations!

Penguin Recover: Remove links vs Burry Links
The best is to do both. However with those with limited resources, would building more links with branded and naked URL anchor links be a better solution than painstakingly asking every webmaster to remove links.

Should I unify my links?
Checking at opensiteexplorer.org I can see that: mydomain.com has has DA 26, linking root domains 1, total links 22 www.mydomain.com has DA 26, linking root domains 31, total links 89 The 22 links to the non-www domain come from the same site, which I would be able to convince to change to the www domain. Is it worth doing it? Will it add up to better DA? Thanks J PS: with only 32 root domains I think I have to do some serious link building...
