Document download sites linking to my site. Should I disavow?
-
I downloaded my links through the Google Webmaster site and I have a number of new links that appear to be coming from document download sites. They have basically taken my PDFs and have them to where they can be downloaded. They are also linking back to my site and creating what I feel are sketchy links. I don't actually want traffic coming to these PDFs. They are basically sample articles for my writing company and it's just a portfolio.
Here's one of the links:
http://www.give-me-doc.com/Trailer-Brake-Types.pdf
So, what or can I do about them? Should I disavow them?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks guys! I think I'll approach it with the DMCA side first. I was reading the disavow tool should be a last ditch effort. This is a portfolio that I really don't want any traffic to and it is essentially content scraping for all intensive purposes, they are just putting the PDFs in a viewer rather than posting the actual content to the pages. I also suspect it's some sort of network of sites because they've all popped up recently and they're all using the same documents. There's literally no need to drive traffic to this part of my site, it's a portfolio for clients only.

The rule I following when auditing my link profile is to see if the link in my opinion cannot drive any quality traffic back to my site, it’s probably worthless. If you didn’t want the traffic from these sites that means you probably didn’t need a link from those sites either.
See if you can remove the links as removing the link is my first priority and incase it is not possible try disavowing them.
Hope this helps!

The very broad rule that I follow is that if you did not create the link, disavow it. That does not work in all situations though, especially if someone notable is quoting an article or your site. The next rule I look at is if it seems useful, or it seems like it is just scraped content for SEO. If it is actually a useful site and a useful link, I would not disavow it. One metric that you can use is if there is actually traffic from the link. On scrape sites there is never any usually link traffic, but with useful links you will get some traffic.
Also on a side note I would consider DMCA'ing them on taking down the PDF's.

When conducting a link building strategy does it matter the country the link is from?
We are a UK business and if we have links mostly from US based blogs and websites does this penalise us. The links are from relevant websites and topics. Should we be focusing on .co.uk sites

Buy domain, redirect, get all the good links (+link juice) and disavow the spammy ones?
There is a domain for sale that has a quite nice profile and a lot of good backlinks, but also quite a few spammy ones. This domain has a Spam Score of 14% acc. to Moz Link explorer, ours has only 2%. My questions: 1. The domain and the good backlinks are related to or close to our content/keywords. But we are worried whether the "spammy" ones will hurt us. Does anyone has experience with this? 2. Would it help if we disavow the spammy backlinks afterwards? And if so, how do we do that? Add new domain to search console, disavow the bad links and then redirect the entire domain to our domain or redirect the domain first and then disavow from our property? Many thanks for your help!

Do inbound links to download .exe files improve SEO?
The site, (http://www.bartenderbarcodesoftware.com/) sells barcode software. They also provide free printer drivers on their site. During a recent domain change (before I started helping them), they began looking at their inbound links and found quite a few external sites linking to these download files. However, when someone clicks on the link on one of these sites (i.e. http://vvs-motor.com.ua/barcode-printer-drivers) it immediately begins downloading the file (i.e. http://www.seagullscientific.com/downloads/drivers/archive/7.2/7.2.4/Unimark_7.2.4.exe) without taking the visitor to the site. The owner would greatly prefer this traffic to engage with the site and is considering 301 redirecting those download links to an actual webpage. Question: Would this look suspicious to Google? Would this have a positive or negative effect on SEO? The last factor to consider is that many of these sites will likely just recreate the list based on the new links at some future point. Thanks for any help!

How do sites have so many 'total links'?
I've been analyzing some of our competitors: essayedge.com and papercheck.com Both sites have a large number of 'total links'... about 93,000 each. The former has about 1,200 linking root domains while the latter only has 195. Even for 1,200 linking root domains, 93k total links seems like a ton to me. Our site has 101 linking root domains and only 299 'total links'. I'm quite new to this whole SEO game and admittedly still learning a TON. Am I missing something here? How do sites generate so many links? This seems nuts to me. Thanks for any help!

Run of Site Links
I recently got a link from a relevant site but it ended up being a run of site link. The site has over 3,000 pages that now link to my site. Will my site get penalized for this?

Links per Site vs. Domain Authority
Here's a quaint one: 1. Posting follow links on another site helps increase one's domain authority. 2. If I post to the same site/forum with followed links each week, would my domain authority reap a domain authority increase benefit? In short, is there any domain authority benefit to continually post links to a site to which I've already posted a follow link?
