Subfolder on existing domain or new domain? Which would you choose?
-
I have been giving it a lot of thought lately. I manage five brand websites for well recognized national brands in the child care vertical. Our websites primarily serve as brochures and lead generators. While we have a blog on each site, I am leaning toward creating content separate from our "brochure style sales copy" that targets each of our individual personas. While it is our primary objective to drive lead volume up, I think people are at various stages in the decision process and even post decision, where we can do a better job nurturing them, engaging them, proving brand worth and all of the psychological reasons people choose and stay with a brand.
With that, if it was your call to make, would you create a subfolder for each persona target, i.e. example.com/persona1/target-theme-1, or would you create a brand new experience on a new domain?
Essentially, both options will provide interesting content, tips, advice, videos, downloads, etc. But, creating a new domain may help separate people from our sales copy, so they don't feel so pressured. I would build out linking for those who wish to engage at that level, but don't want to treat all visitors the same, like we currently do.
I look forward to an interesting conversation about this. Also, if anyone has done this very well in the past or currently, I would love to see some example sites.

Of course. You can see one of mine here at http://linkbuilding.inetseo.co.uk.
That started to rank after less than a week of it going live.

Indeed - everything I said goes equally for sub-domains.
-
hey andy,
Curious if you have any real examples of subdomain sites you have done that rank well and fast?
-
I am making use of subdomains more and more and the thing I love, is that they start to rank much more quickly.
There has been a lot of discussion on this recently, and one very similar to this whereby there was a requirement to create a branded experience, but something that wasn't wholly in-keeping with the rest of the site.
The result was that subdomains were build to great effect. Because of the way they work, you can gain a lot of leverage from the primary site and people recognise that they haven't been shifted off somewhere else.
There is less of an argument to go with sub folders today.

I get what you are saying about separating the new content from the sales content but I think I would still go with the sub-directory.
You have well established domain names that Google associates with the well known brand - stick with it. Your new pages will rank for the terms for which they are relevant and when they do, the relevant traffic will go straight to those pages, never having to even see the sales copy unless they choose to click in to it.
That is how I believe I would approach this. New domains require building authority from the ground up - absolutely achievable, we all do it... but when you have an already established, totally relevant domain.... use it.

Should my commerce store be on a separate domain to my main website
Hi, I have a brochure style website mycompanyname.com that gives lots of detail about my company and what services we offer etc. I am soon going to be adding an commerce solution (haven't decided on opencart or paid such as shopify yet). I was wondering... is the best way to have a shop to have it on a completely separate domain like mycompanynameonlinestore.com or simply add it to a sub folder on my main brochure style website like mycompanyname.com/onlinestore Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to help me make up my mind!!!

Vanish from google after choosing preferred domain and fixing 40 duplicate meta descriptions?
I recently followed 2 Google webmaster suggestions to clean up the on page SEO for our site. I chose a preferred domain 2 weeks ago(to www.website.com) and fixed the duplicate meta descriptions that our CMS was setting to unique and more natural descriptions for each page. I did that 3 days ago. Webmaster tools still says they are duplicates because it hasn't crawled the whole site yet. We have been fortunate enough to have some of our blog posts be covered by yahoo.com, cnet.com, huffingtonpost.com, gizmodo.com, etc. That is some major backlink juice and, as recently as 2 weeks ago, our website would be the #1 result when searching Google for "ourwebsite.com exact title of very popular blog post". Now it is on the 3rd page, and the top results are the websites that linked to our blog post. So....what gives? Is there a specific area I should look at? Our should I wait for Google to fully index our whole site now that changes have been made? It should be noted that our rankings have stayed the same in yahoo and bing. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

New EU Laws governing cookies; will Google Analytics still be usable after May 25th?
Hi, first time I've posted a question, New EU Laws governing cookies; will Google Analytics still be usable after May 25th? - apologies in advance if its already been covered, but I couldn't find any answers when I searched - google search showed someone else ask the question already, but no straight answers were given:- From May 25th the Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive will come in to force which prohibits the use of cookies without informed, prior consent from web users. I've been trying to research to see whether or not this will affect Google Analytics.The Directive seems to be designed to prevent behavioural tracking, rather than web stats, but after reading the directive (with no law experience) I'm fairly confused by what will be prohibited. If anyone has any thoughts on the matter, I'd be very grateful! 🙂

Google slow to index new domains and subs?
Anyone finding Google slow to index new websites at the moment? Made a new site on Thursday and posted a number off high quality, relevant, backlinks to it the same day and now on Monday it is still not indexed. Have see the same with a couple of sub domains I have created off a website with a moz score of 40. Normally can get new sites indexed within hours but this seems super slow.

Domain Authority Growth
Been playing with the historical linking data (nice feature, by the way) and I see a graph which shows the increase in my, and my competitors', domain authority in the previous month. My competitors have averaged a growth of about 1.6 and I have gone up by 2 in this period which is good, however is 2 really that good for a month? What would other members' consider to be a decent growth? To add context, the domain I have in this report went from 26 to 28. Obviously going from 90 to 92 will be difficult but I have a feeling I should be doing more to grow faster at the lower levels.

Buying expired domains with PR and redirecting question :)
Hi, Might be a silly question but wanted to ask it anyway. Lets say I run a gifts website and this year I decide I want to try for a more competitive keyword 'Christmas Gifts'. Now each year I see a lot of search on for example 'Christmas Gifts 2011' and because of the search volume the EMD for this is gone (an affiliate has brought it or something). So the affiliate works hard on ranking it builds up say PR2-PR3 but when it comes around to renewing the domain they don't bother because 2011 search volume has passed and they move onto 'Christmas Gifts 2012'. My question is this: If I was to buy the 'Christmas Gifts 2011' when it expires and redirect it to my Xmas page would it pass the PR and give my new page a boost?

Domain authority
I have a staff of 10 full time people and 8 part time people working on my websites generating dynamic and unique content daily. Been doing this since 2003. We have over 5K indexed pages. There is another site with about 5 indexed pages that ONLY has RSS feeds on our site (one of which are articles from our site). How in the world do they have a higher domain authority than us?

"Near" perfect Keyword domain matches - Which would you choose?
Hi, I was wondering on your thoughts, or if any tests had been done on the best format of "near" perfect keyword domain matches. Suppose I am not really interested in branding, and I am principally after the bonus given to exact keyword matching, but all the exact match high level extensions have gone - whats the next best solution? Suppose I am after the term "car hire", and on my website I want to target many different location keywords such as - "Car Hire London" My main extensions are gone, but I have the options to go for:: Additional Word at the FRONT:
Search Behavior | | James77
Number - eg 4:
4carhire.co.uk -> gives me -> 4carhire.co.uk/london/
Geo association - eg uk:
ukcarhire.co.uk -> gives me -> ukcarhire.co.uk/london/
Info term - eg compare:
comparecarhire.co.uk -> gives me -> comparecarhire.co.uk/london/ Additional Word at the END: Number - eg 4:
carhire4.co.uk -> gives me -> carhire4.co.uk/london/
Geo association - eg uk:
carhireuk.co.uk -> gives me -> carhireuk.co.uk/london/
Info term - eg compare:
carhirecompare.co.uk -> gives me -> carhirecompare.co.uk/london/ Which of the domains would be best to benifit when a term like "Car Hire London" is typed in ?? If you were to choose a domain which would you go for and why?0
