Moz analytics showing joomla tag feature as duplicate page content
-
Moz Analytics is showing Joomla 3 tag pages as Duplicate Page Content because many articles are tagged with multiple words and therefore show up on the same tag-pages.
example URL: www.domain.com/tag/tagID-tagname
I already added "tag" as a URL parameter with Crawl=No URLs.
Is there anything else I should do?

Sorry, I looked at the site after I sent that message. I have seen results where the full article was displayed in the tag page, and was causing a duplication issue. My mistake.
How are your tags set up? Are you using numbers or keywords to tag articles to categories? Here are a few I found:
http://transitionconsultants.com/tags
http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/3
http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/29
http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/60
http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/61
http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/48
http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/59
http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/65If you are using keywords, then the numerical version could be duplicated with the keyword version.
The query with the question mark in the url was found using the search function. If you search for an article, it will display the same content on both URL's. Since it is using the ? in the URL, I wouldn't worry about it as it is generated dynamically. Only if you see them start popping up in indexed results would I take action.
When I was looking around, I also found some links that looked like they were supposed to go somewhere, under "from our blog"

Isn't the tag results page only showing the links to the articles. Example: http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/2-pain
Remind me what is creating the "?highlight=WyJyZWQiLCJmbGFncyIsInJlZCBmbGFncyJd" ?

I think the robots rule is a good place to start.
Since the tagging system was a selling point of the site, you could also consider setting up the tagging pages manually, in which the page only displays the links to the articles, not the full articles. It would function the same, and keep your client happy.
Are your URL's set to be SEF and canonical in Joomla?
It also looks like you have a duplication from using the search function.

http://transitionconsultants.com/articles/511-red-flags-for-practice-buyers?highlight=WyJyZWQiLCJmbGFncyIsInJlZCBmbGFncyJd -
Should I add this to my robot.txt?
Disallow: /tag/
In order to prevent SEs from indexing these type of URLs: http://transitionconsultants.com/tag/2-pain

The Joomla tag system was a selling point for this site's functionality. So I can't remove it.
The url parameter was configured Apr 14, 2014. I thought that the URL parameter was the solution. How long should it take?
The other question is if I set the URL parameter to Crawl=No URLs and assume that google will not index these pages and therefore not get dinged for duplicate content, then will Moz analytics also stop warning me of duplicate content? I don't see a URL parameter for Moz analytics.

I understand your frustration. We use joomla 3.2 and newer almost exclusively and have ran into this before.
We stopped using the tag system, and started setting up our sites as basic as possible from a url and navigation standpoint. One article tied to one url, no tags, no front page blog layouts. This is one of the downfalls of using a cms, strange url creation.
For users, I can see how the tagging system can help find what you are looking for, but not for search engines, since you will have the same articles on more than one url
How long ago did you submit the request for the url parameter? If you don't see the results you want from that, I would remove the tags, and do a url removal request in webmaster tools.

Tracking links and duplicate content
Hi all, I have a bit of a conundrum for you all pertaining to a tracking link issue I have run into on a clients site. They currently have over duplicate content. Currently, they have over 15,000 pages being crawled (using Screaming Frog) but only 7,000+ are legitimate pages in the sense of they are not duplicates of themselves. The client is using Omniture instead of Google Analytics and using an advanced tracking system on their site for internal and external links (ictids and ectids) in the URL parameters. This is creating thousands of duplicated pages being crawled by Google (as seen on their Search Console and on Screaming Frog). They also are in the middle of moving over from http to https and have thousands of pages currently set up for both, again, creating a duplicate content issue. What I have suggested for the tracking links is setting up a URL parameter in Search Console for these tracking links. I've also suggested they canonical all tracking links to point to the clean page so the pages that have already been indexed point to the correct clean url. Does this seam like the appropriate strategy? Additionally, I've told them before they submit a new sitemap to Google, they need to switch their website over to https to avoid worsening their duplicate content issue. They have not submitted a sitemap to Google Search Console since March 2015. Thank you for any help you can offer!

How is Google Analytics defining page depth?
We run two websites and as part of our KPIs we are treating those who visit 3 or more pages of our website as a client served. As a digital team we are not convinced that this is the best metric to use as the improvements we are making to the sites mean that people are able to find the information quicker. Additionally other organisations including forums etc link to us so those users will get the info they need in one click. What I would like to know is how Google calculates page depth in GA. Are they treating the landing page as ground zero and then when users clicks a link they go one page deep? Or is the landing page, page depth 1 . Is page depth a measure of how many clicks a user needs to find their information?

Variables in Google Tag Manager
Last week I got a great answer here on how to implement GTM and cross domain tracking, now that we have that in place I'm looking for some more advice 😉 I'm wondering that if we push variabels into the data-layer of GTM, can we actually use those variables in reports as well? Do they get recorded in Google Analytics? I'd like to use some data that we push to the data layer for segmentation purposes. Anybody an idea how to achieve this?

Analytics confusion
Hi all I am trying to see how many people visit the 'report a repair' pages of our website. It is on a separate domain to our main site. I have looked in our Google account for stats on it and now got confused. In our Google Analytics account, there is a property set up that says it is for spectrum-online (the domain I am after). However, it isn't collecting any data. It's admin info is: Tracking ID UA-7828548-8
Reporting & Analytics | | Houses
Property name
https://www.spectrum-online.co.uk There is another one there set up under the name 'Western Challenge' that does have data and mentions it is for spectrum-online: When I go into the Western Challenge property, the info is: Tracking ID
UA-7828548-3
Property name
http://www.westernchallenge.co.uk Western Challenge shouldn't exist now though. It was one of our old brand names and the site should be 301'd to the main www.spectrumhousing.co.uk site. I looked in this property at the top pages where people appeared to be landing. There are 9 of them, all with stats against them.Usually you can click the icon next to the URL and be taken to the live page. I however get taken to the Spectrum home page each time. All very odd. UA-7828548-3 is not the GA code used on our main site. I then tried clicking on a live spectrum-online page http://www.spectrum-online.co.uk/keyfax32/main.asp?co=KFRDROL_WCHA to see which Google UA number tracking code is being used but I can't see any GA code and it is a frame. Queries are:
Why is the Western Challenge property collecting any info?
Why is the spectrum-online property not collecting any info?
Is there any Analytics code on the Spectrum-online site and if so where? Apologies if I'm missing something obvious but your help would be appreciated. Thanks0 -
Google Analytics Content Experiments
Has anyone else found that Google Analytics Content Experiments seems to quite quickly favor the best performing variant in an experiment, and then show that variant many times more often than other/s - not split the traffic evenly? What is Google's thinking behind 'optimizing' during an experiment? It seems odd to me.

Duplicate content and ways to deal with it.
Problem I queried back a year for the portal and we can see below that the SEO juice is split between the upper and lowercase. You can see the issue in the attached images. http://i.imgur.com/OXnPp.png Solutions: 1) Quick: Change the link on the pages above to be lowercase 2) Use canonical link tag http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps The tag is part of the HTML header on a web page, the same section you'd find the Title attribute and Meta Description tag. In fact, this tag isn't new, but like nofollow, simply uses a new rel parameter. For example: http://www.darden.virginia.edu/MBA" /> ''This would tell Yahoo!, Live & Google that the page in question should be treated as though it were a copy of the URL http://www.darden.virginia.edu/MBA and that all of the link & content metrics the engines apply should technically flow back to that URL.'' 3) See if there is any Google Analytics filters at the site level I can apply. I will check into this and get back to you. What do you all think?????? OXnPp voJdp.png OXnPp.png
