Problem with duplicate pages due to mobile site.
-
Hey everyone,
We've got an issue where our current shopping cart provider (Volusion) allows us to use canonical and rel="alternate" links, however the canonical links are forced on our Desktop as well as mobile pages. When they should only be on the mobile pages. You can view what I mean at the below two pages:
http://www.absoluteautomation.ca/fgd400-sensaphone400-p/fgd400.htm
https://www.absoluteautomation.ca/mobile/Product.aspx?ProductCode=FGD400
Does anyone have any ideas in terms of working around this?
-
You have the rel="alternate" tags from the page back to the mobile version, right? That seems odd...has anyone else had this with mobile and desktop pages in WMT?
-
Awesome thanks Linda, any thoughts than as to why WMT is listing these pages as being considered "duplicates"?

You could always block DESKTOP content spiders from crawling the mobile portion of your site using your robots.txt file. Then, to make sure your mobile site gets indexed properly, make sure to add a link on your desktop site somewhere so that a mobile content crawler can still go through it. This should take care of your issue.

I am not sure what you want to work around? Having the canonical tag on the canonical page? That is not a problem. Here is Matt Cutts on the topic: http://youtu.be/U8eQgx-njk4
I think Bing used to have an issue with it, but it is such a common thing to have a situation like yours where canonical tags are automatically put on pages that even that stance has softened, I believe.
[They are also handy to have on pages in case someone steals them outright--they will still give credit to the home site. ]

Do I have a problem with missing pages in Screaming Frog?
We have category pages and some of those pages have pagination due to us having additional items. Screaming Frog could not find the items that were after page 1. Is this a problem for Google? These item pages are still in the sitemap. I am sure they can find them to index them but does it hurt rankings at all.

Do I need to do on-page SEO for my mobile site?
We have a desktop site, and we just built our first mobile site. Right now, the mobile site doesn't have any title tags, meta descriptions or anything like that, but do I need to even do that? If I have all of that on the desktop site, and the mobile site is just redirected from the desktop site, can't I just do it on the desktop site only? Is there anything to gain from doing it for both sites?

SEO problems from moving from several pages to one accordian
Ive read other posts that say using accordion is not detrimental to SEO, and for conversion optimization we want to take several of our existing pages and make them into one accordion. But what will this do to seo and duplicate content as I redirect the old pages to anchors in the accordion? I would think this would be a dup content problem as www.oldinfo1 www.oldinfo2 will now have their content on the same page but I will be redirecting them to www.newpage#oldinfo1 www.newpage#oldinfo2 Is there a way around duplicate content problems?

Duplicate Title Tag issue due to Shopify CMS
Hi guys, I'm a novice really when it comes to SEO, yet have taken it in house for the next year or so, firstly because I have had my fingers burnt twice...and secondly, to allow me to recoup some of the loss from my prior campaigns. One thing I have noticed on my site (which uses a Shopify E-commerce CMS), is that Shopify duplicates a url for each my products. An example of this is http://www.vidahomes.co.uk/collections/designer-radiators-heating/products/reina-aliano

http://www.vidahomes.co.uk/products/reina-aliano Both products provide exactly the same information, yet appear in different ways subject to how the customer finds them. I contacted Shopify to find a fix to this issue when I noticed a high amount of Duplicate Title Tags in my SEO crawl. Their response was as follows. Using a rel canonical link will help prevent duplicate content issues with search engines. All you need to do is add this line of code: **<link rel="canonical" href="{{ canonical_url }}" />** ** before the tag in the theme.liquid file. It’s that simple :)** The theme liquid file basically generates the outer template for the whole site, and is only compromised when over-ruled. This all seems a little too easy for me, so I am hoping whether someone can elaborate as to whether this will work or not, as I'm not entirely sold on their response. I was always under the impression with canonical tags, that they should be added to the header section of the duplicate page in question, which refers back to the original page. The code I have been told to add above implies that the canonical tag would be added to every page in my site so the Google robot would have a hard time in finding anything at all of relevance Thanks in advance for any assistance with this. Ranking Implications due to Altering Page Names
I'm working on a very large (over 2500 pages), very old website (with pages created in the late 90s). The structure of the site is a mess (it still shows subtle sings of Frontpage!). We are trying to move to a more uniform, dynamic solution. My question is: what sort of implication will there be on search rankings if we implement 301 redirects from the very old pages (that are poorly named) to new pages which follow a uniform pattern. Some of these pages have external links pointing to them and others (most) just have internal links pointing to them which will be adjusted to the new urls. Does the age of the page have a significant implication on rankings? Is there a better way to this than 301 redirects? Thanks for the help
