When Site:Domain Search Run on Google, SSL Error Appears on One URL, Will this Harm Ranking
-
Greetings MOZ Community:
When a site:domain search is run on Google, a very strange URL appears in the search results. The URL is http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com:2082/
The page displays a "the site's security certificate is not trusted." This only appears for one URL out of 400.
Could this indicate a wider problem with the server's configuration? Is this something that needs to be corrected, and if so how? Our ranking has dropped a lot in the last few months.
Thanks,
Alan -
Hi Kingalan,
Feel free to mark the response as good / thumbs up / answered.
To answer the other question. Should you have an SSL, last year I would have said no if you don't collect any user information. However, today my answer would be a little more murky. Google recently announced they are in fact factoring HTTPS in their algorithm as a ranking factor. To have HTTPS you would then need a SSL, to get an SSL you then need a dedicated IP address (you may already have one). If you are not hosting your own website you then have to pay for SSL and possibly the dedicated IP in addition to the normal hosting cost.
The benefit right now, probably wouldn't be immediate as this is a relatively new announcement. However, if you think about why Google would incorporate it into a ranking factor you really understand that it makes since. To get an SSL you have to verify your domain with a trusted 3rd party, and have a dedicated IP, these 3rd parties are competing for your money so they often offer fraud insurance which looks good to users (which is what Google cares about). Now that last part of the statement can be expanded on to a full blown article, as Google makes nothing from users and everything from businesses. Suffice to say, in the end Google wants to serve the best user experience results, and if a website goes through the process of getting an SSL all other things being equal that website should rank higher.
Hope that all makes sense and is helpful.

Hi Don:
This is most helpful, thanks!!! I will have my developers remove this :2082 page as soon as possible.
My site does not use an SSL certificate that I know of. Should it be? No transactions are processed on the site.
Would it be an SEO plus to incorporate an SSL certificate?
Thanks, Alan

Hi Kingalan1,
A couple things I hope will help.
First the suffix at the end of the url :2082 is indicating a port, the typical configuration is when hitting port 2082 is to redirect to the site's cPanel. This URL should never be indexed and never displayed in any SERP. (Search Engine Results Page). I'm not sure how this url got submitted to Google or indexed, but you certainly don't want it there. Could be in an auto created xml site index, or if you used the host's site submit they could have done it. Something you want to look into. The second thing looking at the site nyc-officespace-leader.com it does not appear to use a SSL or it is improperly configured. If you go to any of the sites URLs and change the HTTP to HTTPS you'll notice this error: (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) here is a helpful post on stackoverflow.com that deal exactly with this this error.
Hope this info helps,
Don

What might be exact reasons to vary rankings in countries
Our website ranking always fluctuates from US and India. Our primary visitors are from US followed by India. We can see 10 ranking positions difference in these countries whenever we did some changes. Why this? More precisely to say, rankings are inversely proportional like rank drops in other country while improved in one country and vice versa. What could be the possibility? We been facing this from an year and searching for someone who could really make a move on it.

Infinite Scroll and URL Changing
Hi, So my website is having an issue indexing. Much like other sports sites like ESPN or MLB or a variety of others my site changes the URL as you go down the page. So if you go on a news article and continue scrolling you'll go to another news article. I believe that this is creating errors in Search Console with the article being given an error of being "too long". I don't know how to keep this infinite scroll and url changing which increases my pageviews and eliminate the errors. Can someone help?

Infinite Scrolling vs. Pagination on an eCommerce Site
My company is looking at replacing our ecommerce site's paginated browsing with a Javascript infinite scroll function for when customers view internal search results--and possibly when they browse product categories also. Because our internal linking structure isn't very robust, I'm concerned that removing the pagination will make it harder to get the individual product pages to rank in the SERPs. We have over 5,000 products, and most of them are internally linked to from the browsing results pages in the category structure: e.g. Blue Widgets, Widgets Under $250, etc. I'm not too worried about removing pagination from the internal search results pages, but I'm concerned that doing the same for these category pages will result in de-linking the thousands of product pages that show up later in the browsing results and therefore won't be crawlable as internal links by the Googlebot. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do here? I'm already arguing against the infinite scroll, but we're a fairly design-driven company and any ammunition or alternatives would really help. For example, would serving a different page to the Googlebot in this case be a dangerous form of cloaking? (If the only difference is the presence of the pagination links.) Or is there any way to make rel=next and rel=prev tags work with infinite scrolling?

META Description Not Showing Up On Google
Hi, I have noticed recently that for my highest ranking keyword on Google United Kingdom, the meta description (that has not changed for several months and always used to be displayed when someone searched for this keyword) now only shows the first couple of words. Also, instead of the rest of the Meta Description there is a list of items that I offer for sale all squashed together with their individual prices. I am the only company on page one of Google who's impression looks like this and I think it looks really unprofessional. Why has this happened and how do I change it? Any help is much appreciated

What is wrong with our site?
Hello Seomoz friends. I've about to pull all my hair out and need to turn somewhere. Our site, www.sightmax.com has been around since 2004. We used to be ranked at the top of page two on google under the keyword "live chat". We are no on page 4, heading to page 5. Can anyone take a look at the site and see if anything jumps out at you? The only way we have been able to get on the first page, is the pay for google adwords (which we've been doing every month for 7 years). Again, the site www.sightmax.com and the keyword is "live chat". Any help or feedback would be appreciated SO MUCH! Thanks! Eric
