Server return 404 and 200 status
-
Dear All,
We have a website where we are showing some products. Many times it happens when we remove any product and add that again later. In our site, we have product list page and detail page. So if any product get deleted and client hits the detail page with deleted product url, then we are returning 404. Next time when that product will be available our server will return 200.I have two questions :
1. Is is right way to deal with deleted product ?
2. After deploying it, we observed that our keywords ranking is going down, is that really affect ?
Thanks,
Om -
Then 404 is the correct way to handle it.
You should also be sure that you clean up any internal links to these pages after they are gone. Search engines can understand other sites linking to pages that are no longer available but they do frown on your own site sending users to missing pages.

Hi,
Nice comments. But one thing, since our site have millions of products and may be most of them we wont get back. So in that case, the url already indexed should get removed and should not crawl again. Thats why we were returning 404, so that crawler will understand that url is no more valid.
Thanks,
Om

Hi Sunit,
Stephanie Chang wrote a nice blog post about how to handle this situation here on Moz.
She points out there is no right way to do this. I however really like the option to leave the page and content on the site but mark the product page as out of stock, or unavailable right now. I used to run my own e-commerce store and I had many items that were purchased from overseas. At times I could not get an accurate re-stock time from my suppliers due to language and international challenges. My solution was to create and out of stock (email me when available again) notice. I found when those products did come back in stock, that started selling again quickly do to the emails that went out.
The other thing Search Engines don't particularly like content that comes and goes so that may be why you noticed a hit in some pages.
Hope that helps,
Don

Soft 404 in Search Console
Search console is showing quite a lot of soft 404 pages on my site, but when I click on the links, the pages are all there. Is there a reason for this? It's a pretty big site - I'm getting 141 soft 404s from about 20,000 pages

Using 302s to redirect pages returning in 6 months
We are doing a 2-phase site redesign (in order to meet a deadline). An entire section of the site will not be available in the first phase, but will come back in 6 months. The question is, do we use 301s or 302s for those pages that will be coming back in 6 months? Is there a time limit on what is considered "temporary"? thanks in advance!

Best strategy to handle over 100,000 404 errors.
I recently been given a site that has over one-hundred thousand 404 error codes listed in Google Webmasters. It is really odd because according to Google Webmasters, the pages that are linking to these 404 pages are also pages that no longer exist (they are 404 pages themselves). These errors were a result of site migration that had occurred. Appreciate any input on how one might go about auditing and repairing large amounts of 404 errors. Thank you.

Sitemap issue - Tons of 404 errors
We've recreated a client site in a subdirectory (mysite.com/newsite) of his domain and when it was ready to go live, added code to the htaccess file in order to display the revamped website on the main url. These are the directions that were followed to do this: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory and http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress#When_Your_Domain_Name_or_URLs_Change. This has worked perfectly except that we are now receiving a lot of 404 errors am I'm wondering if this isn't the root of our evil. This is a WordPress self-hosted website and we are actively using the WordPress SEO plugin that creates multiple folders with only 50 links in each. The sitemap_index.xml file tests well in Google Analytics but is pulling a number of links from the subdirectory folder. I'm wondering if it really is the manner in which we made the site live that is our issue or if there is another problem that I cannot see yet. What is the best way to attack this issue? Any clues? The site in question is www.atozqualityfencing.com https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/

Can view pages of site, but Google & SEOmoz return 404
I can visit and view every page of a site (can also see source code), but Google, SEOmoz and others say anything other than home page is a 404 and Google won't index the sub-pages. I have check robots.txt and HTAccess and can't find anything wrong. Is this a DNS or server setting problem? Any ideas? Thanks, Fitz
