Yet Another, Yet Important URL structure query.
-
Massive changes to our stock media site and structure here.
While we have an extensive category system previously our category pages have only been our search pages with ID numbers for
sorting categories. Now we have individual category pages.
We have about 600 categories with about 4 max tiers.
We have about 1,000,000 total products and issues with products appearing to be duplicate.
Our current URL structure for producta looks like this:
http://example.com/main-category/12345/product-name.htm
Here is how I was planning on doing the new structure:
Cat tier 1:
http://example.com/category-one/
Cat tier 2:
http://example.com/category-one/category-two/
Cat tier 3:
http://example.com/category-one-category-two/category-three
Cat tier 4:
http://example.com/category-one-category-two-category-three/category-four/
Product:
http://example.com/category-one-category-two-category-three/product-name-12345.htm
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Hi Craig,
If the keyword appears twice in the url it should be acceptable. What I normally do is to look at the url & judge if it still looks "natural" (with "natural" off course is quite subjective). If it looks stuffed, I change, if not I keep it. Check the 'stuffed' examples here: http://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/2014/09/09/url-keyword-stuffing-spam-filtering/
Sorry I cannot be more specific, it's a bit of a grey area.

Hey Dirk,
Thanks again for the great insight here.
I have a follow-up however...
On our current product pages pre-URL change, the URL structure looks like this:
Let's say, for example purposes, that two of our very top keywords are "Calico Cats" and "Calico Kittens."
example.com/Calico-Cats-Kittens/12345/Tiny-Cat-Playing.html
Before this site re-mod we didn't have any actual category pages, the categories just linked to our search results pages as talked about previously.
The new category pages would look like this:
example.com/Calico-Cats/Calico-Kittens/Sub-Category-One/Sub-Category-Two
So, my question is first for the category page:
Which is better:
example.com/Calico-Cats/Calico-Kittens/Sub-Category-One/Sub-Category-Two/
example.com/Calico-Cats/Kittens/Sub-Category-One/Sub-Category-Two/Is there any concern here with Repeating the word "Calico?"
And for the product page:
example.com/Calico-Cats/Tiny-Cat-Playing-12345.html
(Excluding the "Calico-Kittens" category level to decrease the number of folders and also, because of the concern that including "Calico" twice may be an issue?
ORexample.com/Calico-Cats/Calico-Kittens/Tiny-Cats-Playing-12345.html
(including an extra category layer, but only because "Calico-Kittens" is one of our top, most valuable keywords)There will be hundreds of thousands of product pages like this.
Thanks again for your help!

Hi Craig,
Personally I would prefer folders because it's easier for reporting purposes
Cat tier 1:
http://example.com/category-one/Cat tier 2:
http://example.com/category-one/category-two/Cat tier 3:
http://example.com/category-one/category-two/category-threeCat tier 4:
http://example.com/category-one/category-two/category-three/category-four/It seems to go against the rule of a flat site structure, but in fact for that, it's more the number of links to the category that counts rather than the number of folders.
For the product url I wouldn't use all these folders. If one product belongs two multiple categories / subcategories you'll end up with duplicate urls - here I would rather go forhttp://example.com/xxx/product-name-12345.htm. xxx could stand for the main category (if each product belongs to only one main category) or something generic like "products"
Some additional info can be found here: http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/structured-urls/
Hope this helps,
Dirk

Can you help by advising how to stop a URL from referring to another URL on my website with a 404 errorplease?
How to stop a URL from referring to another URL on my site. I'm getting a 404 error on a referred URL which is (https://webwritinglab.com/know-exactly-what-your-ideal-clients-want-in-8-easy-steps/[null id=43484])referred from URL (https://webwritinglab.com/know-exactly-what-your-ideal-clients-want-in-8-easy-steps/) The referred URL is the URL page that I want and I do not need it redirecting to the other URL as that's presenting a 404 error. I have tried saving the permalink in WordPress and recreated the .htaccess file and the problem is still there. Can you advise how to fix this please? Is it a case of removing the redirect? Is this advisable and how do I do that please? Thanks

Keyword Phrase in URL structure
Wondered the best URL structure, to include a major keyword phrase. Our clients' case is that their domain name is not the main keyword. So should we include the keyword phrase in the URL structure to list all their office locations: A - www.website.com/anxiety-treatment/denver/1001
Technical SEO | | ErnieB
or
B - www.website.com/denver/1001 Would this be considered keyword stuffing? We'd like "A" above to rank for keyword phrases related to "anxiety treatment denver", etc.0 -

Formatting dynamic urls?
We have a long-time previously well-established website that was hit by panda. On one section of the site, we have dynamic urls that include %20 in them (e.g. North%20America). It's recently come to our attention that google has both a version of the url with a plus sign (+) and the version with the %20 (space) (e.g. North+America). Upon researching this, it seems that a hyphen (-) is preferable to either of the above. We obviously need to remove the %20's from the urls as they can cause issues. So, should we stick with the + sign since it's already indexed and ranking or do a 301 rewrite and change them all to hyphens instead of the plus sign? This is the one section of the site that has maintained rankings through the panda debacle, so we need to take that into consideration as we don’t want to lose the rankings that we have. Along the same lines, we have two other sections of the site that provide search results as well, though these are all formatted to use a plus sign. Is it advisable to do a 301 rewrite to change the plus signs to hyphens on these as well or just leave them alone? This particular section has lost rankings over the last year with panda updates.

Overly Dynamic URLs
I have a site that I use to time fitness events and I like to post the results using query strings. I create a link to each event's results/gallery/etc. I don't need these pages crawled and I don't want them to hurt my seo. Can I put a "do not crawl" meta on them or will that hurt my overall positioning? What are my other options?

How do I fix these duplicate URLs?
HI guys, I ran a report on my site and it shows some duplicate titles (example below). Do I need to add something to the htaccess file or another file to fix this? I understand that the search engines should only see 1 URL for the page. 2 pages have "Bikes for sale | used bikes | second hand bicycles" title pauslwebsite.com/bikes/ paulswebsite.com/bikes/index.asp Thanks

Rel canonical with index follow on query string URLs
Hi guys, Quick question regarding the rel canonical tag. I have lots of links pointing at me with query strings and previously used some code to determine if query strings were in the URL and if they were then not to index that page. If there weren't query strings then the page would be indexed and followed. I assume I can now use the rel canonical tag on each of these pages so the value goes to the proper URL minus any query string. However do I need to have the rel canonical tag above the index, follow tag on the page? So URL is site.com/page.html?ref=ABC meta robots is "index, follow" Rel canonical is "site.com/page.html" Does the order of the meta robots and canonical tag matter? Thanks in advance!
