Product review based on sales data - How much should we link out?
-
Hello,
We're doing a product review series based on sales data.
How much should we link out? Consumersearch is the number one position with full sources for "best X product"
Consumersearch has flaws it looks like. The data reads correct but the products they are promoting are not the best based on our own customer service informal interviews.
Was wondering if we should include all data in the field including competitors and display our sources, or if we should just list in-house data.
Any other advice for this is appreciated too.
Thanks.

"Maybe we could say that we pull from a variety of sources off the web through this consumer reports article combined with interviews."
I would probably go that direction. Or, you could mention a list of the locations you pulled information from, but not link to them. I might word it as something like:
"Our review data comes from primary sources including our own internal recorded data, interviews, [whatever else] as well as secondary sources including consumer reports, and the following other sites: [list competing sites you pulled data from but don't link].
Fact is, if you are pulling data from competitors mentioning them and letting people know where your data is coming from is the right thing to do (as you've been saying). However, I probably would withhold the link and just list the site name in this situation.
If there is a way to generate more reviews from other sources that you wouldn't mind linking to (like bloggers, other consumerreports type sites, perhaps look at niche forums/communities for users reviews, etc.) I would certainly pursue that route as well.
Good luck!

It looks like I wasn't clear about the question but you still helped.
We are doing like a 10-part "Best 5 Products" (Best Red Shoes Blog Post, Best Blue Shoes Blog Post, etc) that includes the best products in different categories (each different blog posts) along with a buying guide like consumer reports. There will be a beautiful 10-button menu at the top that organizes the whole review. Goal is to do such a nice job it's not scalable. We'd like to draw off of external sources as well as our own interviews.
Except for consumer reports pretty much all the reviews are done by competition.
Maybe we could say that we pull from a variety of sources off the web through this consumer reports article combined with interviews.
How do we do this and word this? We don't have much in the way we can do with external bloggers this industry.
Thanks!

Hi BobGW,
I'm assuming when you say "we're doing a product review based on sales data" you mean that you're reviewing a product that has been a good seller for you? Or, perhaps you're reviewing a few products in a category and and writing up your review based on which ones sell the best and have the best reviews?
For me, linking out depends a little on what type of site you have, and more on what is going to provide the best experience for a user.
It sounds to me like you have one product that fits in this product grouping and you'd like to do a review of competing products along side yours.
In this situation, I probably wouldn't link directly to the competitors (but I would certainly site any appropriate research with links), but I likely would include links to other third party sites that discuss your product as well as the competitors products. This information combined with your own should help users feel like your being as objective as you possibly can.
Bottom line is though, consumers are suspicious if you have a dog in the fight. Perhaps you could give your product or a trial of it away to a few bloggers or members of the press in your industry in hopes that they'll provide some feedback on their own sites. If it's favorable, you could then mash-up this content in a variety of ways which might include a side-by-side comparison of your product (along with this new third-party information) stacked against competitors, or perhaps quotes from the third party services that reviewed your product along with your own internal sales data.
I can't be certain that's answering you question, but the bottom line for me is link as it makes sense for users, and use the rel=nofollow attribute if you aren't 100% sure that where you are linking is credible. If you can avoid linking to a competitor and still have a useful set of content, I'd do it.

What are the SEO implications of high quality backlinks from US-based websites to UK-based websites?
Hi everyone, quick question I hope someone could help me with: We're representing a client based in the UK. As part of their overall strategy we've been linkbuilding. At the moment, about 80/90% of the links we've gained come from UK-based sites, with 10/20% coming from US-based websites. The US based websites are very good (think New York Times and genuine, relevant blogs with good readerships). An external search analyst/consultant has contacted the client to say that the US links will be harming the site, because the links are from websites in the US and not the UK. We believe that if 80/90% of the links were from the US this could indeed cause harm as it could indicate to search engines that our client is in the US when it's not (which might compromise their chance of ranking in .co.uk versions of search engines) however because it's only 10/20%, and because the linking sites are very good, we believe that they will getting all of the benefits of the positive metrics without any meaningful negatives. We just wanted to get a few opinions on this to see if people think that we're mistaken, and would be glad to hear any opinions contrary to our own.

Question about inbound links
Hi! Hi have a little doubt. I'm interested in getting higher positions for a landing page with a long tail keyword. Now the page (ecommerce product page) appears in position 5 and have a low authority domain site and page. My intention is to put more original text in the page and write a blog post with a link pointing to the product page. My doubt is: What is better? Building the blog into the same domain or build it into a high authority external domain (like wordpress), what link could be better for my objectives? Thanks! (And sorry for my English)

Link Pharming
My company has been using an SEO company for a while and have built up our pagerank to a 6. However, we have noticed that they're involved in link pharming - they're buildng extra websites and linking to our site on them. We are not happy with this as we know it will only be a matter of time before Penguin hits us. The contract with the SEO company is coming up for renewal soon and we're thinking of cancelling it. However, we are not sure if the company will delete all our backlinks, which will probably decrease our PageRank too. Has anyone here ever had a similar experience? What did the SEO company do when you cancelled the contract? Does anyone here work for an SEO company and what do you do when someone cancels your service?

Building Links
Hi everyone, I am new to SEO and in the process of building links the clean way. Any suggestions on how exactly I can find websites that are linking out to quality websites already? I went thru most of my competitors link building strategy - and 90% of their links are done either thru link exchange or paid links. So looking at my competitors strategy does not really help. So I need to find websites/blogs/forums that are ready to link to me if I can show them some useful content. How do I find these websites first? Please help! Cheers! Arjun

Link building
I have two separate websites on different servers and was wondering that since reciprocal links effectively eliminate each other, I'm curious if this link strategy will keep the links counting. Here's the strategy: I will have someone link to my site A and if i link to their site from my site B in a three way link strategy, will the links count even though both my site A and B have me listed as the Whois so Google knows that both sites are owned by me? Or will the links be discounted as reciprocal? Thanks in advance for your feedback! Take care, Ron

.edu links
Hi mozzers, I've had some great success reaching out to many .edu webmasters. Often they are professors and such. My question is, i'm guessing during the summer holiday period, reaching out to these webmasters won't be so fruitful. I'm not in the US and was wondering when the US Summer holidays are for universities over there? Also, does anyone have experience outreaching to these webmasters over the holidays? Peter
