Help Me Change My Client's Mind

My client wants to build a second site to provide targeted links for SEO to his main site. He's interested in buying a TLD with some near topic authority/links and then build the second site's authority up from there.
He is clear that this could get him in trouble for a link scheme, but thinks it can all be hidden from Google. Off the top of my head I was able to recall a few of the pain-in-the-neck things you'd have to do to not get caught, but he seemed unconvinced. I recall you'd have to have:

Different registrar

Different contact/WhoIs
-
Different site host
-
Different G/A, GWT
-
Logging into second's site's G/A, GWT with different IP address not used for main domain
With the exception of the last one, he didn't seem to think it would be too hard. Aren't there more difficult maneuvers required for hiding this from Google? I want to be able to point out to him how ridiculous this low integrity effort will be, without losing the client.

He thinks if you buy a domain with some links pointing to it already, that solves problem one of a site passing some authority. Problem two, pulling it off, he thinks would be relatively easy. Gah!
Here's how I feel about this:

Google has been busting people for manufactured links for ten years at least. Also, if this new site does not have links into it from other websites then it has no power to pass to the main site. So, if you can get links into this outhouse site, you would be better pointing them straight to your main site and give it the full power.
This approach is like trying to kill rabbits with a ricochet. There is nothing good to say about it. I wish all of my competitors were spending their time, or the money, or their SEO's efforts, on these things that do not work and could get both sites busted by google.

Show the boss man some of the guys ranking at the top and the links they've been able to solidify to their own root domain w/out having to resort to creating multiple websites.
However, I'm going to make a stab in the dark here... I'm guessing he thinks this is the way to go because he's seen some competitors doing some sort of seedy link-building, and that maybe someone is (or at some point was) ranking ahead of him.
The best thing to do is to look at the competition ranking at the top, look at the top 2 or 3... analyze their content (how much, how consistent, how niche related is it, how unique, how thorough), their social media presence, if local then their citation/links count and accuracy, their UX/mobile-friendliness/call-to-action/site-navigation, their on-page optimization consistency, and yea, their links.
But look at everything together, then you can confidently tell your client what's up, why the competition is doing well, show examples, and you'll likely be able to steer them in the right direction.

He'd be far better off putting that effort and expense into building up his main site's authority. Show him an example of a close or direct competitor who has accrued valuable links (and thereby authority) by researching, publishing and promoting some high-value content.

I don't know if this would change his mind, but in spinning up that site, you'll likely have to provide additional SEO services to maintain its ranking/authority on those related keywords.

Was there a recent secret Panda update? Help.
Our site http://www.entrepreneurhandbook.co.uk has had a fairly significant drop in organic traffic this past week. Going from 3.8k to 3.k Can't see any reported updates on the major SEO websites, we'd had steady growth all year then appear to have back-peddled. One post in particular, our UK venture capital list was page1 for a number of VC related keywords such including 'venture capital' (google.co.uk) but it's completely dropped out of the index for that one and others. Does anybody have any ideas? We haven't done any link building at all, we've focussed entirely on on-site SEO and high quality in depth articles/posts/lists and historically we've always seen small increases at every algo update. 2CG25iv

Google's spell check recognize a keyword with volume
When the keyword "acls recertification" (an important keyword for our client) is typed into the Google search box, the word "recertification" is underlined in red. Note that you only need to type "acls rec" to make the red underline appear.BUT, Google does not underline the word "recertification" when it is typed into the search box alone, nor does Google underline the word "recertification" when the following keywords are searched: cpr recertification bls recertification pals recertification ^These are all closely related to the keyword "acls recertification," so this spell check behavior is very inconsistent.Why does this matter? Because no matter how close you come to typing "acls recertification," Google's autocomplete suggestions never include "acls recertification" (because of the perceived misspelling?).BUT, Google does suggest "acls recertification online" in the dropdown menu. If you select the "acls recertification online" suggestion then backspace until the word "online" is gone, the red underline disappears, and "acls recertification" becomes an autocomplete suggestion. VERY strange behavior...I have replicated this issue on various depersonalized browsers and devices, so I am confident that this is not related to my personal settings.This keyword contributes to a large portion of our client's business (they specialize in acls certification and recertification), so you can imagine how concerning this is for us. Note that until very recently (3-4 months ago), this keyword did NOT have any spell-check issues. This keyword averages 2400 searches per month according to AdWords which should be enough volume to allow Google to recognize the correct spellingI posted this issue in the Google product forums, where I was advised to submit feedback directly on the search results page via Google's "feedback" link. I have submitted this feedback to Google, but I thought I would bring this to the MOZ community as well to see if anyone has experienced a similar issue, or has any ideas as to what could be causing this issue.

I can't understand why I am not rank one on SERPS
Hi Guys, I really cannot understand why I am no longer rank 1 on SERPs? My link data shows great weight in comparison to competitors, my on page SEO is good, nice and diverse on the alt text. I know there are a lot of factors that effect SERPs but I believe I have done well but am still not ranking? Have I missed something?

Google's Local Search Results for Broad Keywords
I have a question regarding Google's local search results for broad keywords. Since Google is changing their algo to reflect local results for broad words, would it be beneficial now to start going after those words as well? For example: we have a client ranking for 'miami security alarm', but I would like to know if it would be beneficial to start optimizing for 'security alarm' as well. Also, since Google's keyword research tool reflects searches on a national level, how would I be able to find out how many searches a broad keyword is receiving on a local level? Thank you in advanced!

Google's not indexing my blog posts anymore! Why?
Google just recently stopped indexing my blog posts immediately after being published, why could this be? I would usually post a blog post and it would be in google results within 45 seconds, now they don't show up until 6 hours later, if at all (a few never even showed up). Also, my home page doesn't even refresh when I make a change to the site. My site is CantStopHipHop [dot] comI have all in one SEO, xml sitemap generator, and webmaster tools and nothing seemed irregular in the settings.I appreciate any thoughts/help/suggestions.

Clients asks: How long till on Bing and Yahoo?
Hi there, One of my clients had asked me how long it would take for his site to get up on Yahoo and Bing. He's currently on Google, but those other search engines are lagging. It's been a week or so since his site launched, but I'm not sure what to tell him as I don't really know much about Yahoo and Bing.

No-follow tags on links in the footer...do it or don't do it?
With some of the great reports SEOMoz has provided I've been able to start to take the correct steps towards fixing crawl issues, on-page issues, etc. One of my websites allows a customer to drill down to their specific state and then their city to apply for an auto loan. The SEOMoz reports told me I had too many links on these pages specifically. One of my ways to remedy this would be to add "no-follow" tags on the links in the footer as well as the links to the cities. Am I steering myself in the right/wrong direction? Should I be approaching this problem from a different perspective? Any help is greatly appreciated!
