Google sidebar advertising dropped
-
Has anyone noticed how the google sidebar advertising has completely disappeared? They only display top 4 adwords and then remaining on the bottom of each search page. I can't find any info on it or when it actually happened?
-
haha! That's uncanny timing!!! Yes Chris. You heard it here first Thanks for the update.
-
Sarah, I hope you're going to take credit for spotting this first
it's official ...
-
I seen your video Yosepgr... Interesting comments and I also have similar thoughts re the adwords. For me, it's happening on different browsers AND even when signed out. I very rarely see the side rail ads atm.
-
I see the same thing, in one account they will show ads on the right side, on the other one they will not.
-
Haha! It's actually driving me crazy (the curiosity). It just looks on all my browsers like desktop side rail ads are banished. Such a puzzle. Ah well... Google does what google wants at the end of the day.
I did read the article Kristen shared and some other interesting older articles discussing similar queries. It's funny too that with the 4 ads along the top, the top organic searches above the fold are getting less and less exposure.
-
Don't you just love Google! I've just been messing about with it and you're right.
Same search term logged into one account and no sidebar, logout and it's back. Then sign back in with a different G account and it's still there.
Then do the same routine using a VPN from a different location and the sidebar is consistently there.
Glad it's not my job to make sense of all this

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Chris I've tried it on different browsers (both signed in and signed out) and with different keywords. I'm finding it does it with some keywords but not others... Interesting. I was wondering if they were considering phasing out sidebar ads perhaps altogther...
Kristen I will read that article now thank you. I agree with you about the freeing up of the right hand space in regards to the Knowledge Graph results. If I'm searching for something in particular, like a company or person, I see more and more that the knowledge graph results appears nicely on the right. I'm going to look into this further.
-
Worth pointing out that if you log out of G then the sidebar reappears.
-
I've seen this a few times, but mostly when I've been doing multiple quick searches around the same or similar keyword combinations (i.e. working on a client's campaign). I'd put it down to either testing or Adwords restricting the display where it looks like it's not a "genuine" search pattern.
Does not look like it's widespread or permanent. But who knows!

Google's Search Algorithm update to 'Local Snack Pack'
Hi there - I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a big shift in the Google Local 'snack pack' in the past 48 hours? We have noticed a big change in clients results - specifically today. Has anyone else noticed any changes or perhaps data on possible changes? I am aware of this update: https://www.seroundtable.com/big-google-search-algorithm-ranking-update-29953.html but perhaps there maybe another update since. Any input would be much appreciated! Phil.

Suddenly ranking dropped in US: What actions required to retain?
Hi Moz community, Our website has global audience, visitors and clients. Suddenly our website dropped in rankings for main keyword in US; which is our primary targeting country. Not sure why? This is been happening for last 2 months, we waited it to recover and now trying to fix if we can do anything about it. Is there anything wrong with back-links? What might be the factors contributing here for global website? Thanks

Why is site dropping in rank after we update it?
One of our sites - supereyes.com - appears to drop in rank after we update it. The client notified us of this today and I've verified that it did indeed drop in Google -- four spots since last week. He says this happens every time we make changes to the site, but then a week later it will go back up and is usually higher than where it was before. I have not verified this, but I'm very worried it may not rise again In the past week, we've posted a new blog entry to their site and we've changed some of the content -- specifically, added their locations to the header, added a contact page and put two testimonials in their sidebar. We've also had someone submitting their site to directories and local business sites like Angie's List and so forth. There are about 16 new backlinks established in the past 2-3 weeks. Also, I should note, traffic is higher than it's ever been, but the client doesn't look at traffic. They only look at their Google results. Can anyone offer any insight into what's going on here and if I need to be worried the site won't rise again in the rankings?

Changing Googles Sitelinks
Hi all, I know Google will only show sitelinks if the site is deemed authoritive and if it will help the user searching a keyword, but is there anyway to order or control which links appear in the sitelinks? I know you can demote a sitelink in Webmasters, but is this not shooting yourself in the foot? If I demote a link will Google replace it with the next link it thinks is worthwhile and be doing this eventually show the links you want to appear in your sitelinks? Thanx Gary

Classifieds and Google Panda
It seems Google's Panda update is targetting low quality sites with little unique content (I know there's more to it than that). It makes sense that they may want to do this but what about classified sites. They may use some scraped content as well as unique ads, and the ads may lack content as they rely on the users writing the ads. However, they are helpful to the people that use classifieds. Because of these factors, these sites are suffering with the release of the latest Panda update. Any advice for classified sites and how they can combat the rankings drops???
