How to use Schema.org for product listings
-
Hi Guys, Maybe a weird question but how would you advise using Schema.org for product listings or if you prefer a sub category page with products listed in it. Thanks, Walid

Hello,
I've got a site that's product based but it's custom countertops so nothing that has a model number. I've added schema (hopefully in the correct fashion) to mark up my gallery pages which are made up of thumbnails that then lead to a single product page. I would love it if someone would take a quick look and let me know if this is the correct way to use it. Here is the code for the
<ul itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/ImageGallery" id="image-gallery-thumbnails" title="Iroko Countertops and Butcher Block Island Photographs"> <li> <a itemprop="thumbnailUrl" href="[iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-1.html](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/wood-countertop-gallery/iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-1.html)"><img src="[../images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/wood-kitchen-island-top-6.jpg](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/wood-kitchen-island-top-6.jpg)" width="80" alt="Distressed edge grain iroko butcher block kitchen island">a> li> <li> <a itemprop="thumbnailUrl" href="[iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-2.html](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/wood-countertop-gallery/iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-2.html)"><img src="[../images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/wood-kitchen-island-top-7.jpg](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/wood-kitchen-island-top-7.jpg)" width="80" alt="Detail of butcher block kitchen island made from iroko wood">a>
li> <li> <a itemprop="thumbnailUrl" href="[iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-3.html](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/wood-countertop-gallery/iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-3.html)"><img src="[../images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/wood-kitchen-island-top-8.jpg](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/wood-kitchen-island-top-8.jpg)" width="80" alt="Wide plank iroko kitchen island">a> li> <li> <a itemprop="thumbnailUrl" href="[iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-4.html](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/wood-countertop-gallery/iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-4.html)"><img src="[../images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/raised-kitchen-bar-top-1.jpg](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/raised-kitchen-bar-top-1.jpg)" width="80" alt="Iroko raised wood bar top">a> li> <li> <a itemprop="thumbnailUrl" href="[iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-5.html](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/wood-countertop-gallery/iroko-countertop-pictures/iroko-countertop-5.html)"><img src="[../images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/raised-kitchen-bar-top-2.jpg](view-source:http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/images/photographs-of-wood-countertops/thumbnails/raised-kitchen-bar-top-2.jpg)" width="80" alt="Iroko bar top for a kitchen island">a> li>

You would treat your sub category page the same as any other content page in this case. SO with schema you would combine a couple of their example schemas. I havent done it yet for sub-categories, but i was planning on using elements from both:
http://schema.org/SearchResultsPage and http://schema.org/CollectionPage
The nice part about schema it that you dont need to lock yourself into one of their pre-defined categories, moreso than it is the combination of tags together that interpret the page.

Hi Joe,
Thanks again for your reply. That was my impression too that there wasn't any specific documentation for sub category or category pages. Thanks for getting back to me on this.

Walid,
I've never seen the markup on a subcategory page. All the documentation I'm aware of suggests they only want to see one product per page with markup, so a subcategory page wouldn't work. It might be possible to add the markup to whatever product information exists on the subcategory page and specify the product URL of product instead of the subcategory page's URL. But I'm not sure if any search engines would accept this or if there is any advantage to doing this versus having the markup on the product page. If you go this route, I'd be interested to hear how effective it was.
I'm not allowed to discuss what we actually do at Overstock, but semantic markup is viewable in the source code.

Hi Joe, thanks for your response. I'm actually more interested in how to add the schema.org markup for subcategory page . I understand how it works for a product detail page but not for a subcategory page. How do you guys do it at Overstock?
Thanks,
Walid

I'm not sure your exact question is. If you simply want to know whether to markup your product pages or your subcategory pages, add the schema.org markup to your product pages. The information that can be used to describe products can be found here: http://schema.org/Product . Unfortunately, the schema.org site doesn't offer much for examples, and although the rich snippet testing tool is supposed to work for the schema.org data, there were bugs early on. I still haven't heard if these bugs have been fixed. Please let me know if that doesn't answer your question.

Need help with list schema!
Hi all, I am trying out list schema on my site, but in Google's structured data testing tool I'm having an issue with the URL section. Whenever I have the same URL for each position is says that duplicate URLs aren't allowed, then when I have different URLs it says that they all have to be the same URL. Does anyone have any pointers that can help make my list schema error free!? Heres my schema:

How to deal with duplicated content on product pages?
Hi, I have a webshop with products with different sizes and colours. For each item I have a different URL, with almost the same content (title tag, product descriptions, etc). In order to prevent duplicated content I'am wondering what is the best way to solve this problem, keeping in mind: -Impossible to create one page/URL for each product with filters on colour and size -Impossible to rewrite the product descriptions in order to be unique I'm considering the option to canonicolize the rest of de colours/size variations, but the disadvantage is that in case the product is not in stock it disappears from the website. Looking forward to your opinions and solutions. Jeroen

Website SEO Product Pages - Condense Product Pages
We are managing a website that has seen consistently dropping rankings over the last 2 years (http://www.independence-bunting.com/). Our long term strategy has been purely content-based and is of high quality, but isn’t seeing the desired results. It is an ecommerce site that has a lot of pages, most of which are category or product pages. Many of the product pages have duplicate or thin content, which we currently see as one of the primary reasons for the ranking drops. The website has many individual products which have the same fabric and size options, but have different designs. So it is difficult to write valuable content that differs between several products that have similar designs. Right now each of the different designs has its own product page. We have a dilemma, because our options are:A.Combine similar designs of the product into one product page where the customer must choose a design, a fabric, and a size before checking out. This way we can have valuable content and don’t have to duplicate that content on other pages or try to find more to say about something that there really isn’t anything else to say about. However, this process will remove between 50% and 70% of the pages on the website. We know number of indexed pages is important to search engines and if they suddenly see that half of our pages are gone, we may cause more negative effects despite the fact that we are in fact aiming to provide more value to the user, rather than less.B.Leave the product pages alone and try to write more valuable content for each product page, which will be difficult because there really isn’t that much more to say, or more valuable ways to say it. This is the “safe” option as it means that our negative potential impact is reduced but we won’t necessarily see much positive trending either. C.Test solution A on a small percentage of the product categories to see any impact over the next several months before making sitewide updates to the product pages if we see positive impact, or revert to the old way if we see negative impact.Any sound advice would be of incredible value at this point, as the work we are doing isn’t having the desired effects and we are seeing consistent dropping rankings at this point.Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Schema markup for products is missing "price": Is this bad?
Hey guys, So a current client of mine has an e-commerce shop with a few hundred products. They purposely choose to keep the prices off of their website, which is causing errors in Google Webmaster Tools. Basically the error shows: Error: Structured Data > Product (markup: schema.org) Error type: missing price 208 items with error Is this a huge deal? Or are we allowed to have non-numerical prices for schema ie. "call for quote"

Salvaging links from WMT “Crawl Errors” list?
When someone links to your website, but makes a typo while doing it, those broken inbound links will show up in Google Webmaster Tools in the Crawl Errors section as “Not Found”. Often they are easy to salvage by just adding a 301 redirect in the htaccess file. But sometimes the typo is really weird, or the link source looks a little scary, and that's what I need your help with. First, let's look at the weird typo problem. If it is something easy, like they just lost the last part of the URL, ( such as www.mydomain.com/pagenam ) then I fix it in htaccess this way: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mydomain.com$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.mydomain.com$ RewriteRule ^pagenam$ "http://www.mydomain.com/pagename.html" [R=301,L] But what about when the last part of the URL is really screwed up? Especially with non-text characters, like these: www.mydomain.com/pagename1.htmlsale www.mydomain.com/pagename2.htmlhttp:// www.mydomain.com/pagename3.html" www.mydomain.com/pagename4.html/ How is the htaccess Rewrite Rule typed up to send these oddballs to individual pages they were supposed to go to without the typo? Second, is there a quick and easy method or tool to tell us if a linking domain is good or spammy? I have incoming broken links from sites like these: www.webutation.net titlesaurus.com www.webstatsdomain.com www.ericksontribune.com www.addondashboard.com search.wiki.gov.cn www.mixeet.com dinasdesignsgraphics.com Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Greg

Using a single sitemap for multiple domains
We have a possible duplicate content issue based on the fact that we have a number of websites run from the same code base across .com / .co.uk / .nl / .fr / .de and so on. We want to update our sitemaps alongside using the href lang tags to ensure Google knows we've got different versions of essentially the same page to serve different markets. Google has written an article on tackling this:https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/75712?hl=en but my question remains whether having a single sitemap accessible from all the international domains is the best approach here or whether we should have individual sitemaps for each domain.

Effective use of hReview
Hi fellow Mozzers! I am just in the process of adding various reviews to our site (a design agency), but I wanted to use the ratings in different ways depending on the page. So for the home page and the services (branding, POS, direct mail etc) I wanted to aggregate relevant reviews (giving us an average of all reviews for the home page, an average of ratings from all brand projects and so on). Then, I wanted to put specific reviews on our portfolio pages, so the review relates specifically to that project. This is the easiest to do as the hReview generator is geared up for reviews that come from one source, but I can't find a way of aggregating the star ratings to make an average rating rich snippet. Anyone know where I can get the coding for this? Thanks in advance! Nick.

Still Use Nofollow Home?
I was wondering how many of you are still nofollowing the Home button or anything else for that matter? I thought NoFollow was getting a little outdated, but I still see it lots of places. Thoughts?
