Technical SEO - Where to begin?
-
Hi all,
I'm looking to learn more about technical SEO. My background was digital marketing/PR where I learned the importance of links, of anchor text, of page speed, of improving UX signals, of SSL, utilising things like Google My Business etc.
However, I find I am chasing my tail when it comes to things like understanding JS/CSS/log file analysis etc. I've tried reading so many articles on the subjects and I just find it so damn confusing. AnugalarJS/BackboneJS. Fetching & rendering, URL parameters...etc. I know from my own experiments that JS pages struggle to rank and I've created two very similar pages, one without JS, one with JS (which had far more links) and the non-JS page ranked far higher.
So, I suppose I'm asking for some help with how to begin learning this stuff. I find the articles on Moz, Search Engine Land etc to be a bit confusing...maybe I'm not technically minded enough!
Cheers,
Rhys

For technical SEO, I tend to utilize the Site Auditor tool from Ravwen Tools. Its great.

Thanks, Dan. Yeah I'm hoping to attend BrightonSEO this year, and I did attend one course about advanced OnPage SEO but found the very technical stuff (like log analysis and JS) a bit too complicated. I feel like my knowledge extends as far as 'I know what you should/shouldn't do, but I don't necessarily know why'.
Any book recommendations?

I've been in a similar situation, and I'm definitely still learning when it comes to code and development. I found the best way was to separate out the technical areas, and focus on one at a time.
In addition, it's worth seeking out actual courses rather than trying to pick it all up from free online articles. Either that, or find someone that knows their stuff in each specific area, and would be kind enough to help guide you when you need it. I've definitely found that some in-depth book and course learning, and helpful mentors, has been the quickest way to level up when needed...

Does anyone know where to find a list of SEO best practices for Youtube? Specifically...does anyone have thoughts on the SEO benefits of an @domain.com login vs @gmail.com login? Or is adding my url to the "Associated website" channel setting sufficient for SEO purposes?

Does Quantcast interfered with SEO?
Quantcast (http://www.quantcast.com/), a stats program was removed from my clients website because the former SEO consultant said it interefered with his SEO efforts, claiming the google bots weren't reading it right. I have never heard of that before and my client now wants Quantcast back on their website. Has anyone heard of this problem with Quantcast?

How does the FSS jQuery plugin affect SEO?
Looking to create a full screen sliding site for optimum use on tablets. Found this: http://codecanyon.net/item/fss-full-screen-sliding-website-plugin/full_screen_preview/159103 What is the general feeling on using FSS in terms of SEO? Should it be avoided? What's the alternative? Thanks!

Good technical parameters worst load time.
I have recently created a page and added expires headers, nonconfigured e-tags and gzip to htaccess code and just after that according to pingdom tools my page load time has doupled although my yslow ponts went from 78 to 92. I always get a lite bit lost with this technical issue. I mean obviously a site should not produce worse results with adding these parameters and this increase in page load time should rather be due to bandwith usage. I suppose I should leave this stuff in the htacces. Than what is an accurate way to know if you have done a real improvement to your site or your load time has really went up? This question is more up to date with css sprites as I always read that sometimes spriting every picture is a waste of resources. How can you decide when to stop?

New Forum: SEO considerations.
We're going to add a new forum to our website. We don't anticipate very large volumes of users. I read somewhere in The Art of SEO that forums should be 'built in bbPress'. I'm very much a programming novice so I'm still trying to get to grip with the basics of forums. I'd be grateful to know the main SEO considerations (however basic) that I should tell my web developer who is building the new forum.
