Desktop Ranking Disappeared After URL Change; Mobile Ranking Improved
-
A client's developer moved a site onto a new (WordPress) CMS, where the only change was URLs - the front end code stayed the same. The site is 10+ years old and previously had fantastic rankings (#1-4) with inner pages for some relatively generic search phrases (eg 10,000 searches / month in the UK, per Keyword Planner).
Now, on Desktop searches the site isn't appearing anywhere in the 300+ results for a key search phrase, where it used to rank between #2-4; however over the last 3 weeks on Mobile the site ranks better than before, even though the site isn't at all mobile-friendly (it's over 10 years old).
During the move, there were some errors by their developer:
- mistakenly left in a sitewide rel=canonical tag referring to the homepage
- 3-4 301s before finally reaching new URLs
- a lot of 301s missed (250+ crawl errors appeared in Search Console)
- page content differentiation by parameter, instead of individual URLs
For example, the page that used to rank for the targeted phrase, this left 4 different URLs indexed, with the same content.
To tackle this, we have so far:
- put in correct rel=canonical tags
- set up Search Console to recognise URL parameter as differentiating content
- fixed all crawl errors appearing in Search Console
- added a link direct to the problem page, direct from the homepage
- stopped duplicate content being indexed (including for the page in question)
- ensured the page load speed is still good (< 0.75s)
Ranking for Desktop over Mobile would make sense, but not Mobile over Desktop! I'd really appreciate any advice on how to tackle this.
Thanks!

This got resolved, so here's what happened for anyone else with this issue.
After 6 weeks of the page ranking well on mobile, but not ranking at all on desktop, we:
- specified the old URL in the sitemap.xml
- put in an individual 301 from the old URL to the new (ie didn't just rely on the rules we were using for other URLs)
- ensured only one redirect was required from old to new URL
- put a link on the homepage, using the targeted keyword phrase, to the new URL
(these were in addition to the other technical fixes detailed in the original post above)
About a week after this, the desktop ranking returned, with the new URL ranking. Maybe coincidence, maybe the extra steps were required. But it's worked, whatever the reason.

Interesting points, thanks. The domain hasn't changed, only the URL, so I've manually updated the sitemap to add in an old / problem URL and we'll see if Google restores the relationship between old and new URL. Will update the thread with any changes.
Thanks.

The issue I'm seeing here is that Google has digested all the info and since pages were canonicalized and 301'd to others then they consolidated the value and dropped them. Even if you fix the canonical google won't be crawling those pages again as they've been dropped.
My theory is that you have the new structure live but not the old URLs, so you may want to ensure Google recrawls those pages and understands the right path.
I would create a Google Webmaster Tools account for the old website and submit an XML sitemap forcing google to re crawl the old URLs. and so to see the newly corrected 301.
If you can't do this, you may try creating a set of HTML pages linking to the old URLs, by letting google crawl and index them (with the index page and all pages linked on the page option) you should be able to have google crawling those pages and so to discover the right path.
I hope this works. Let us know how it goes, happy to dig further

Just saw a competitor jump in rank by double digits, questioning my url structure choice now.
Currently I have for our big keyword oursite.com/big-keyword/ and clicking on a material type will be oursite.com/big-keyword/material-type/ Our competition has **theirsite.com/big-keyword/ **and when you click on their material type **theirsite.com/material-type-big-keyword/ ** The also have 20 some pages, while we have around 652 as a eCommerce site as well, not sure why they jumped so high in rankings, while their backlink structure is so small still and they have a DA half of ours. I'm in the middle of a site redesign and very close to restructuring the urls the way they have it, since it really seems to have worked well. How do you feel about that?

Goolge: Mobile friendliness is now a ranking factor on Mobile
John Mueller from Google has just confirmed: Google has just confirmed that mobile friendliness is now a ranking factor for people on smartphones. The date it goes live is 24th April 2015. There is a great presentation on the hangout - which will be available later to watch and once its available I will update with a link - but I would make sure your checking webmaster tools for any alerts / messages if you care about smartphone users. What do people recommend, regarding responsive vs mobile site vs dynamic serving. Is your site ready? What are you planning on doing since the update has been announced.

Changing URIs
About 2 months ago, my client changed its domain—using 301 redirect—and took the hit in search results. Here's my question: If I convince the client to revert to their old URI, will that help or hurt their SEO? Follow-up, can it hurt to change interior URIs to something that better reflects the page content? Thanks.

Why does my site rank so badly
its my turn to ask the interminable question why does my site rank so badly? site is: marriagerecords.org.uk. it was #1 for 'marriage records' on google for about 6 months. then it was 5th to 10th for about 2 months. now it is nowhere for this phrase and anything else, none of the pages I have written rank for anything. I have spent hours upon hours researching original content and I have got some great backlinks from sites like wrexham.gov.uk and somerset.gov.uk (some dont show in opensiteexplorer yet). im guessing im over-optimizing something but i'd love some concrete fixes if anyone could suggest any. thanks, tom

Content and url duplication?
One of the campaign tools flags one of my clients sites as having lots of duplicates. This is true in the sense the content is sort of boiler plate but with the different countries wording changed. The is same with the urls but they are different in the sense a couple of words have changed in the url`s. So its not the case of a cms or server issue as this seomoz advises. It doesnt need 301`s! Thing is in the niche, freight, transport operators, shipping, I can see many other sites doing the same thing and those sites have lots of similar pages ranking very well. In fact one site has over 300 keywords ranked on page 1-2, but it is a large site with an 12yo domain, which clearly helps. Of course having every page content unique is important, however, i suppose it is better than copy n paste from other sites. So its unique in that sense. Im hoping to convince the site owner to change the content over time for every country. A long process. My biggest problem for understanding duplication issues is that every tabloid or broadsheet media website would be canned from google as quite often they scrape Reuters or re-publish standard press releases on their sites as newsworthy content. So i have great doubt that there is a penalty for it. You only have to look and you can see media sites duplication everywhere, everyday, but they get ranked. I just think that google dont rank the worst cases of spammy duplication. They still index though I notice. So considering the business niche has very much the same content layout replicated content, which rank well, is this duplicate flag such a great worry? Many businesses sell the same service to many locations and its virtually impossible to re write the services in a dozen or so different ways.

Canonical URL
I previously set the canonical Url in google web masters to the non www version, when I check my on page opt, it tells me that I have a critical issue with this. Should I change it in google web masters back to the www version? if so is there the possibility of negative results? Or is there a better way to deal with this? Note, I have inbound links pointing to both types.

How to change URL of RSS Feed?
Hi, There are some websites that keeps on scraping my content. I have blocked them already from accessing my website using .htaccess but they still get my content via RSS feed. I have tried delaying the RSS feed but I think this affected google rankings. My question is, is there a way to change the URL of my RSS Feed? From: http://www.mysite.com/feed to http://www.mysite.com/feed2
