How can I make sure a desktoppage is shown in the (desktop) search results instead of the mobile page?
-
When I search for my brandname, the mobile version of the customer support page is shown in the (desktop) results.
We use a m.example.nl mobile webpage. To try to solve the problem, we’ve adjusted the following:
- Made sure the homepage is marked according to schema.org
- Homepage expanded with textual content and headings containing our brandname
- Removed all the textual content from the mobile customer support page
- Added the mobile customer support page to the mobile sitemap
What can we change more in settings/marking/sitemap, to make sure our desktop homepage is shown in the brandname results?
-
Hi Willie,
Is your homepage showing up for other keywords? Are you sure it's been indexed? Make sure you haven't accidentally blocked the homepage from crawlers.
Even if it is in the index already, now that you've made these updates to the homepage you may want to resubmit it to the index in Google Search Console using the Fetch and Render tool.
Also remember that these things can take a little time to update.

Thanks for your answer Paul.
We have rel-alternate markup in place for most of the pages. However we saw that there was no markup for the (mobile) customer-support page which is shown in the desktop results. We have added the markup and hope to see the desired result.
The mobile customer support page is shown in the mobile results aswell, when searching for the brandname. Of course we want the mobile homepage to be shown in this result. Do you, or anyone else, know what to do to fix this?

Do you have rel-alternate markup in place for the separate m. URLs?

How to load the mobile version of a page without the desktop version in the background (and vice versa)
Let’s say your designer wants your homepage to be fairly image heavy. Then let’s say they want to use DIFFERENT images for desktop and mobile. You appease them and make this work. But now your homepage is slow (makes sense, right? It’s loading both sets of images but only displaying one set). You lazy load and compress but your home page takes SIX SECONDS to load. The rest of your site loads in just under two. This can only be having a negative impact on SEO. You won’t convince your designer to cut the images. What do you do? My immediate thought is to look for a way of only loading the content relevant to that screen size. Sure, it won’t reshuffle itself on desktop when you drag your Chrome window to the size of a phone. But who cares? We’re the only peope who do that anyway. Is this possible? Do you have any better ideas?

301 redirected all my pages to my new domain, now I have a problem with Google Search Console
Hi guys! I bought a new domain name and redirected all my URLs from the old domain to the new one. Everything worked perfectly but now I have a little problem. I want to use the option 'Address Change' in google search console. Step 1 Works (Select new website in the list) Step 2 Works (Confirm that the 301 are working) Step 3 Asks me to Verify the old domain (huh!?) in order to complete the request. Obviously that doesn't work because my 301s WORKS! So if I try to verify the old website by putting a google file in the root of my domain Google tries to access it and it automatically redirects to the new domain. I must be missing something lol help!

Search Console Indexed Page Count vs Site:Search Operator page count
We launched a new site and Google Search Console is showing 39 pages have been indexed. When I perform a Site:myurl.com search I see over 100 pages that appear to be indexed. Which is correct and why is there a discrepancy? Also, Search Console Page Index count started at 39 pages on 5/21 and has not increased even though we have hundreds of pages to index. But I do see more results each week from Site:psglearning.com My site is https://wwww.psglearning.com

Can you noindex a page, but still index an image on that page?
If a blog is centered around visual images, and we have specific pages with high quality content that we plan to index and drive our traffic, but we have many pages with our images...what is the best way to go about getting these images indexed? We want to noindex all the pages with just images because they are thin content... Can you noindex, follow a page, but still index the images on that page? Please explain how to go about this concept.....

Avoiding Duplicate Content in E-Commerce Product Search/Sorting Results
How do you handle sorting on ecommerce sites? Does it look something like this? For Example: example.com/inventory.php example.com/inventory.php?category=used example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high example.com/inventory.php?category=used&location=seattle If not, how would you handle this? If so, would you just include a no-index tag on all sorted pages to avoid duplicate content issues? Also, how does pagination play into this? Would it be something like this? For Example: example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high__ example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high&page=2 example.com/inventory.php?category=used&price=high&page=3 If not, how would you handle this? If so, would you still include a no-index tag? Would you include a rel=next/prev tag on these pages in addition to or instead of the no-index tag? I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you need me to clarify any of this. Thanks in advance for your help!
