Product URL Optimisation
-
Hi guys,
We are currently trying to add new products to our site but we are in a quandary on what type of URL structure to pursue.
For example:
Product Name: Aspect Exfoliating Cleanser 240mlhttps://www.example.com.au/aspect-exfoliating-cleanser-240ml (including the size)
VS
https://www.example.com.au/aspect-exfoliating-cleanser1.) Which is a better URL structure based on SEO 2018 and why?
2.) Is there any merit in removing the size from the URL key with the aim of attracting more traffic?Keen to hear from you guys!
Cheers,
-
Hi Michel
I work with eCommerce sites so have a lot of experience in colour and size split pages.
If the exfoliating cream comes in only one size you would be better having the first option. Write a really strong product description 150 words plus along with technical details.
If the cream comes in various sizes then have them as a drop-down variant on the page. So you would have a single product with a strong product description and then a drop down box so that the user could choose the size of tube/bottle they needed.
The reason is that if you don't do this you will end up duplicating the product descriptions. So say you have 3 sizes then the URLs would conceivably be like this:
https://www.example.com.au/aspect-exfoliating-cleanser-240ml
https://www.example.com.au/aspect-exfoliating-cleanser-360ml
https://www.example.com.au/aspect-exfoliating-cleanser-480mlThis would mean that all three would share the same product description and the only thing separating them would be the size. This is bad for SEO as Google doesn't rank pages with duplicate content well. In fact, it could end up that none of them ranks in the top 5 pages.
Keep it simple - one product - size drop down.
Successful stores do it this way.
I hope that helps
Regards Nigel

Duplicate page url crawl report
Details: Hello. Looking at the duplicate page url report that comes out of Moz, is the best tactic to a) use 301 redirects, and b) should the url that's flagged for duplicate page content be pointed to the referring url? Not sure where the 301 redirect should be applied... should this url, for example: <colgroup><col width="452"></colgroup>

Canonical URL availability
Hi We have a website selling cellphones. They are available in different colors and with various data capacity, which slightly changes the URL. For instance: Black iphone, 16GB: www.site.com/iphone(black,16,000000000010204783).html White iphone, 16GB: www.site.com/iphone(white,16,000000000010204783).html White iphone, 24GB: www.site.com/iphone(white,24,000000000010204783).html Now, the canonical URL indicates a standard URL: But this URL is never physically available. Instead, a user gets 301 redirected to one of the above URLs. Is this a problem? Does a URL have to be "physically" available if it is indicated as canonical?

Urls missing from product_cat sitemap
I'm using Yoast SEO plugin to generate XML sitemaps on my e-commerce site (woocommerce). I recently changed the category structure and now only 25 of about 75 product categories are included. Is there a way to manually include urls or what is the best way to have them all indexed in the sitemap?

How do we get individual products to rank ?
Hi, We have a site that sells music and we have been researching SEO and things we can do to help SERPs. We have started on link building and have added links to the footer of our page We have friendly urls, meta tag description added to all products. My question is, Yes we can work on getting keywords to rank better in google, one of ours being buy cds. But when it comes to individual products these keywords and results are useless if people are searching for a CD by artist or title which most do as they know what they are looking for. How do i get better results for all these unique products ? One or more of our competitors constantly show up in first few results for nearly any CD search by artist or title, yet we cant seem to get anywhere near this type of result ? Thanks Chris

How would you optimise a news website?
I have been asked for advice on how to optimise a news website whose keywords, almost by definition, change every day according to the articles being written. How would you, for example, do SEO for the NYtimes.com? Great content and subsequent links I'm sure take care of themselves. Just onsite then? If so.... what?
