Deleting Tags Properly - Advice Needed
-
I have over 18,000 tags. Needless to say, most of them are relatively useless to the user and generate no traffic, while cluttering the site. (I use Wordpress.)
My plan is to delete tags, but I want to do so safely as to not accumulate website errors. (Tags pages are noindexed.)
What process should I take here? Here was my basic plan (any help is appreciated).
1. Find irrelevant tags that are connected with hardly any posts.
2. Go into the post, and remove said tag.
3. Now, with a tag having a 'count' of 0, I go into Tags, and delete it.
Safe, right? But now it seems those tag pages just turned into 404s "Uh-oh...Page not found!"
Where do I go from here? Create 410's?
Thanks

Hi Mike,
There is no big deal on having tons of 404s when those pages are safely removed and don't carry any importance to users.
Even when those tag pages are noindexed, there is less risk there.Google won't dimish your "SEO status" for having 404s that are correctly removed.
Here, John Mueller in a Webmasters Hangout said that 404 or 410 won't impact website rankingsHope it helps.
Best luck,
Gaston

Negative Effect of Duplicate Title Tags
Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out if one my problems with search rankings might be a result of 2 of my main pages (home page and tier 2 page linked to main menu) have the same title and description tags. Let's say my keyword is 'building paper airplanes'. The url for my homepage is http://domain.com and the Title Tag is "Building Paper Airplanes I Domain". My tier 2 page url is http://domain.com/building-paper-airplanes and the Title tag is "Building Paper Airplanes I Domain". The home page is more of an introduction page before the user gets into the instructions on the tier 2 page. Can anybody advise if this might be having a negative affect on my search results for the search term 'building paper airplanes'? Thanks.

Help with duplicate title tags.
Hi Just going through Seomoz crawl diagnostics for one of my clients sites & see that the title tags for over 2,000 pages are the same due to the way there site software generates the titles using php, examples : **home page** = <title>Home - Trade prices,Next Day Delivery,Bulk Discounttitle> other page = <title>A0 Frames - Trade prices,Next Day Delivery,Bulk Discounttitle> So as you can see the page titles have the page name given to the beginning of the title which is fine as they have the keyword, then the text : Trade prices,Next Day Delivery,Bulk Discount Now if i take out the text : Trade prices,Next Day Delivery,Bulk Discount the home page is going to have just the word Home which is rubbish & the other pages will have the keyword which is better but not great, just wondered if any one has a better solution?.

Proxy Server & Wordpress - Need Help
I'm looking for some guidance/expert opinions on using a proxy server with Wordpress. When a consumer goes to ourwebsite.com/blog, our IT department would like to set up the request to be “proxied” to the Wordpress Blog site. They would like to add a header to the web request to identify that traffic as coming from through the proper URL. Should someone or a crawler attempt to access the WordPress site directly (blog.ourwebsite.com) they would be client side redirected to the proper URL ourwebsite.com/blog. This is WAY out of my league here, so I figured I would ask the experts. Will this negatively effect our SEO?

Duplicate page content issue needs resolution.
After my last "crawl" report, I received a warning about "duplicate page content". One page was: http://anycompany.com and the other was: http://anycompany.com/home.html How do I correct this so these pages aren't competing with each other or is this a problem?

Advice on too many onpage links
Hi Just done a 250 crawl on a new site I am working on (still under development), all 250 pages seem to have too many on page links, however they do not have any links I can take away This page, for example, http://empleous.com/gb/store/category/398743/shoes?price=20-50 has (according to moz crawl) 252 links on. Seems a little high. What would be the best way to correct this please? I cannot find that many links. I know there are about 85 links in the menu bar but they are all needed and none of the others can really be replaced either. Thanks Carl
