Pages not ranking - Linkbuilding Question
-
It has been about 3 months since we made some new pages, with new, unique copy, but alot of pages (even though they have been indexed) are not ranking in the SERPS I tested it by taking a long snippet of the unique copy form the page and searching for it on Google. Also I checked the ranking using http://arizonawebdevelopment.com/google-page-rank
Which may no be accurate, I know, but would give some indication. The interesting thing was that for the unique copy snippets, sometimes a different page of our site, many times the home page, shows up in the SERP'sSo my questions are:- Is there some issue / penalty / sandbox deal with the pages that are not indexed? How can we check that?
- Or has it just not been enough time?
- Could there be any duplicate copy issue going on? Shouldn't be, as they are all well written, completely unique copy. How can we check that?
- Flickr image details - Some of the pages display the same set of images from flickr. The details (filenames, alt info, titles) are getting pulled form flickr and can be seen on the source code. Its a pretty large block of words, which is the same on multiple pages, and uses alot of keywords. Could this be an issue considered duplication or keyword stuffing, causing this. If you think so , we will remove it right away. And then when do we do to improve re-indexing?
The reason I started this was because we have a few good opportunities right now for links, and I was wondering what pages we should link to and try to build rankings for. I was thinking about pointing one to /cast-bronze-plaques, but the page is not ranking. The home page, obviously is the oldest page, and ranked the best. The cast bronze plaques page is very new.
- Would linking to pages that are not ranking well be a good idea?
- Would it help them to get indexed / ranking?
- Or would it be better to link to the pages that are already indexed / ranking?
- If you link to a page that does not seem to be indexed, will it help the domains link profile? Will the link juice still flow through the site
-
These two pages are similar but definitely not duplicates. I wouldn't worry about that being the issue. The first two answers in this thread have it right, you need to build links internally and externally to these new pages to help them out. You are indexed just fine, just need some link love.

Do I need to re-ask the question, or repost it? Is having SEO MOZ review it like an escalation of the question?
Thanks

Thanks Richard - How do I get it to go upto someone at SEOMoz to confirm?
-
Page looks great by the way!
Yes, there is lots of duplicate content here. However, with the other page copy, I would think you would not get penalized.
I must admit, this should go up to someone at SEOmoz to confirm.

Hi Richard
Wanted to see if you could see the links, and if you feel the flickr code on those pages is a good idea or not?
Thanks

Thanks Richard

Yes, please post a link.
I am going with that as long as there is other content on the page and not simply a redundant pulling of Flickr code, you will fine.
If you are pulling the Flickr code and on that page is just a recompilation of images in a different order, then yes, I would say a duplicate content issue will arise.
I think that answered you question?

Richard
Thanks for your reply. It all makes sense. Was wondering if you coudl give me some detial about #4 (Flickr code showing) as I wwant to be sure I was clear, and what we are doing is not harming us.
- So even though the images are used on multiple pages, and the code is pulling the alt tags, captions, and titles (this has actually helped us rank for some longer tail kw, and have alot of images show up in image search which is good for us) and there are alot of KW in the code block, it would not penalize us in any way?
- I know there is not reallu a duplicate content penalty per se, and more of a filter, so for each query G can choose which of our "duplicated" page is most relevant. Would this be the same here?
- We have very well written, persuasize, and KW balanced on page copy, but if you look at the source code, the % of words taken up by the flick images infor is so large compared to our sales copy. Woudl this be drowning out the kw in the sales copy?
- Could I post a coupel URLS?
Thanks
Shabbir

Wow, I think you used up all your Q&A points on this post alone : )

Could be, but probably not

doubt it.

No
1a) Yes, very much so. Link to it, blog it, tweet it, and post on Facebook and other social sites
2a) Yes
- Yes
- Make sure the page is listed in the site XML and the new XML is uploaded to Google Webmaster.
- Be sure to link to this page from strong pages on your site, or blog.
- Get outside pages linking to this page.
- Blog it, tweet it, Facebook it, etc.
I hope that helps.

I guess it really comes down to what key phrase you are trying to rank, adding new pages with unique copy doesn't mean they will rank automatically, apart from onsite factors, you need to look into external factors as well, this includes building links to the new pages or taking advantage of social signals (if this applies to your industry).
To see whether there is any duplicate copy issue, I recommend using this http://www.copyscape.com, you can check whether there are any duplicate copy floating around on the net.
In regards to the flickr images, it really depends on the alt tag, how they describe the images, I don't think there is a problem using the same images on different pages with the same alt tags but if alt tags are all keywords, that might be a problem.
In regards to link building, my recommendation is to link to the page that would benefit users the most because apart from getting traffic in, I look into getting them to the most useful page to get them to convert, and I believe Google likes this more than just ranking the homepage. So if you find the "not-ranking" page beneficial to users, I would link to it and it will help get them indexed/ranking. One other thing you need to look into is the quality of the link, make sure it's relevant to your industry, because if they are just random links, Google might not pass value at all.
Hope this helps

That is a whole lot of questions so let me do my best to sum it up for you.
Your new pages are not ranking because new pages don't just rank. The quality of your content helps Google know what phrases to rank your pages for. The links to that page determine its relevance and authority, or how high it will rank for those phrases.
Putting up new content just because does not guarantee any rankings. Are there internal links to these pages? Are they in your sitemap? Do they have any external inbound links coming to them?
Make sure you have internal links to these pages as well as external links to them. Make sure the content is more than just original and well written- it has to be optimized. Make sure your title tags are all unique and keyword rich. These types of basic SEO practices should be followed first and foremost. Then if nothing is ranking like you think it should after 3 months, you can look at other things.
I would imagine that if they have been indexed but aren't ranking that they just need some optimizing and some link juice. That tends to get pages ranked pretty well.

.htaccess Question
Hi,I have a website www.contractor-accounts.co.uk that has an .htaccess file that strips .php and forces a closing brace /. The site is now over 6 months old and still has a very low ranking with MOZ also rating the site as DA/PA = 1 which seems to indicate some sort of issue with the website. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to why this site is ranking poorly as much of the onpage SEO has been completed to a level of 90%+ for specific keyterms so I'm probably either looking at routing of the framework of so other technical SEO issues possibly? How come only 2 pages of my 16 page infographic are being crawled by Moz?
Our Infographic titled "What Is Coaching" was officially launched 5 weeks ago. http://whatiscoaching.erickson.edu/ We set up campaigns in Moz & Google Analytics to track its performance. Moz is reporting No organic traffic and is only crawling 2 of the 16 pages we created. (see first and third attachments) Google Analytics is seeing hundreds of some very strange random pages (see second attachment) Both campaigns are tracking the url above. We have no idea where we've gone wrong. Please help!! 16_pages_seen_in_wordpress.png how_google_analytics_sees_pages.png what_moz_sees.png

Mobile site not ranking
Hello, Our main site ranks well for all the keyword terms, and yet, our mobile site is buried. It is a "m." configuration, and I am wondering if it is a question of not using the correct programming language to get it there? Or if the redirects to the main site should relate differently? I have tried to read up on the topic of mobile site SEO and cannot find (or understand) the answer? Could someone please help? Thanks so much in advance!

Beating big brands for rankings on Google page 1 post Panda & Penguin
Hi all, so having followed lots of SeoMoz guidelines that we have read here and standard SEO ideas we seem to no longer be able to rank for our core keywords.. and certainly not rank in front of the big brands. We're a small eCommerce company and have historically ranked Google positions 1-4 for many of our keywords (a year or two ago)... but now no where near this any more. We always write unique content for our products of usually around 300-400 words per product we include our keywords in Title, meta description and H1 tags. We include buyers guides and set up articles on the site and generally have a reasonable amount of good quality and always uniquely written content Recently we have concentrated to ensure that page load speed is above average and Google Web Master Tools page speed gives us around 80-90 out of 100 We carry out linking and have always done... in the most recent past this has been weighted towards 'content for links' to gain purely incoming links (although in the early days from 2005 we did swap links with other web masters as well as write and publish on article sites etc). product category pages have an intro piece of text that includes the key phrases for that page and is placed as close to the body tag as possible. From what I understand if you are hit by Panda or Penguin the drop off is invariably over night, but we have not seen this... more of a gradual decline over the last year or two (although there was a bit of a downward blip on Panda update 20). Now we're lucky to be on page 2 for what were our main keywords / phrases such as "portable DVD players" or "portable DVD player"... in front of us in every position is a big national brand.. and certainly on page 1 it is purely only a big brand in every postion. They don't have great info from what we can see for these keywords and certainly don't give as much info as we do. For the phrase "portable DVD player" our portable DVD accessories page ranks better than our actual portable DVD player category page... which we also can't understand? This is our portable DVD category page: http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/portable-dvd-players-car Currently we're starting to produce 2 minute product demo videos for as many of our product detail pages as we can and we plan to host these on something such as Vimeo so that content will be unique to our site (rather than YouTube) in order to give us a different format of unique content on many of our product detail pages to improve rankings (and conversion rates as the same time ideally). So ... I am hoping that some one out there can point us in the right direction and shed some light on our declining positions. Are we doing or have done something wrong... or is it in these post Panda / Penguin days extremely difficult for a small business to beat the big brands as Google believes these are what every one wants to see when shopping? Thanks for any comments and / or help.

Index page
To the SEO experts, this may well seem a silly question, so I apologies in advance as I try not to ask questions that I probably know the answer for already, but clarity is my goal I have numerous sites ,as standard practice, through the .htaccess I will always set up non www to www, and redirect the index page to www.mysite.com. All straight forward, have never questioned this practice, always been advised its the ebst practice to avoid duplicate content. Now, today, I was looking at a CMS service for a customer for their website, the website is already built and its a static website, so the CMS integration was going to mean a full rewrite of the website. Speaking to a friend on another forum, he told me about a service called simple CMS, had a look, looks perfect for the customer ... Went to set it up on the clients site and here is the problem. For the CMS software to work, it MUST access the index page, because my index page is redirected to www.mysite.com , it wont work as it cant find the index page (obviously) I questioned this with the software company, they inform me that it must access the index page, I have explained that it wont be able to and why (cause I have my index page redirected to avoid duplicate content) To my astonishment, the person there told me that duplicate content is a huge no no with Google (that's not the astonishing part) but its not relevant to the index and non index page of a website. This goes against everything I thought I knew ... The person also reassured me that they have worked within the SEO area for 10 years. As I am a subscriber to SEO MOZ and no one here has anything to gain but offering advice, is this true ? Will it not be an issue for duplicate content to show both a index page and non index page ?, will search engines not view this as duplicate content ? Or is this SEO expert talking bull, which I suspect, but cannot be sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, it would make my life a lot easier for the customer to use this CMS software, but I would do it at the risk of tarnishing the work they and I have done on their ranking status Many thanks in advance John

Dismal content rankings
Hi, I realize this is a very broad question, but I am going to ask it anyways in the hopes that someone might have some insight. I have created a great deal of unique content for the site http://www.healthchoices.ca. You can select a video category from the top dropdown, then click on a video beside the provider box to see. The articles I've written are accessible by the View Article tab under each video. I have worked hard to make the articles informative and they are all unique with quotes from expert physicians. Even for strange health conditions that don't have a lot of competition - I don't see us appearing. Our search results are quite dismal for the amount of content we have. I guess I'm checking to see if anyone is able to point me in the right direction at all? If anything jumps out... Thanks, Erin
