Any Tips For putting up a new site and not loosing rankings?

We are switching one of our sites to a magento site and dont want to loose current rankings what are the best practices for this? Same Domain but the deep url pages will change urls
-
We had the same issue moving our site from nopcommerce to magento. The structure of the site in regards to category and even file extension (.aspx to .html) changed. We had over 2000 products and to create redirects for all of them was quite a bear.
What we ended up doing was to look into Google's rankings of our top 500 pages and focus on getting those redirected initially. Checking both the supplemental and primary indexes helped us to figure out which ones to do. I also ended up using excel and its formulas to create the redirect links enmass and then copied them to my .htaccess file. Also too, if you had a specific directory where your ecommerce site use to be located ( we had /Store/) create that directory and place your .htaccess in that file with Symlinks turned On.
This seemed to take care of everything for us and helped us to focus on links that were actually indexed.

Good point!

Try if you can use the sitemap file of the old website (or e.g. from Google Webmasters / Analytics) and keep as much urls in the same format as possible (e.g. setting them via a script in the db of magento).
I normally create a .htaccess file containing the necessary 301 with a script or notepad++ (using regexp). But depending on the number of urls this might not be an option.

Redirect all old URL's to their new counterparts as mentioned by Richard, but also make sure your site architecture and navigation remain similar. If in your old site your internal link structure made pages A, B and C seem the most important, make sure in your new sites layout that dosn't suddenly change so that pages X, Y and Z suddenly seem like the most important pages.
If a page took three clicks to get to before, it should still take three clicks to get there.

I know nothing about Magento, so let me get that out of the way : )
Either A) you have to do a 301 within the .htaccess file on all the URLs that are changing.
redirect 301 /old-url.php http://www.your-domain.com/new-url.php
Or place PHP code within the header (if you can) that will test the page, extract the URL, see if it is valid (within a database - dunno if Magento has one) and redirect to the new URL when applicable.
Keep an eye in your SEOmoz campaigns for 404 errors or your Google Webmaster Tools.
Hope that helps

How to improve my rankings?
Hi guys, I'm targeting a specific country NZ to start off with as my site is only new 3months old - whilst I'm trying to rank for various keywords such as - psychic readings, online psychic readings, love psychics, clairvoyant, astrology, tarot card readings etc I can see I'm slowly ranking around 18, 20,30,40 through my blog page, but nothing from the site. I know the site is content thin and were currently working on improving this, is there anything else you can suggest that perhaps I might need to be aware of? Or any tools I could use to go about getting information that could help put me ahead lol Thanks all!

Does site size (page count) effect search ranking?
If a company has a handful of large sites that function as collection of unique portals into client-specific content (password protected), will it have any positive effect on search ranking to migrate all of the sites to one URL structure.

Domain Authority: 23, Page Authority: 33, Can My Site Still Rank?
Greetings: Our New York City commercial real estate site is www.nyc-officespace-leader.com. Key MOZ metric are as follows: Domain Authority: 23
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Kingalan1
Page Authority: 33
28 Root Domains linking to the site
179 Total Links. In the last six months domain authority, page authority, domains linking to the site have declined. We have focused on removing duplicate content and low quality links which may have had a negative impact on the above metrics. Our ranking has dropped greatly in the last two months. Could it be due to the above metrics? These numbers seem pretty bad. How can I reverse without engaging in any black hat behavior that could work against me in the future? Ideas?

New Site Launch- Bad Rankings
So I am slightly stumped. I work on a few eCom sites and over the past few months we have been launching new products as well as some site updates/upgrades. The issue that I am having is this. Product that is actually new this season, as in we did not carry it before, is ranking fine...generally speaking we are top 3 in Google with Brand/Product name. However product that is not new, meaning it has a new color or graphic but has been in the catalog for years is not ranking. In Prior years the URL's ended with the product name, now however they have additional information added to the end for this season. Would not directing the old URL to the new URL effect the rankings of these pages? I am open to suggestions beyond redirecting as well. Thank you!

Clone sites at new company
I just came in house to our company for SEO. We have one main site and 182 that are exact duplicates and almost exact clones of the main site. It's no surprise that half of these clones are deindexed already. The meta tags are just the domain name URL. I want to add unique text on the home page to each site, fix the meta tags and switch them up so they aren't clones. Other than a huge rewrite of the code for each site, I'm not sure what else to do to prevent the rest from getting deindexed. Is there any way to prevent the rest from getting deindexed?
