How to handle conflicting anchor text in left nav?
-
Our site provides two approaches for customers to locate the products they're looking for: Brand and Category.
Where we're unsure if we're causing confusion for the search engines is when the left navigation filter link anchor text for these pages conflict with one another.
For example, let's say we have a Snazzy Brand Type A widget, Blue, Squared.
The nav links from a category approach could be:
Widgets > Blue > Squared > Snazzy
From the brand approach, we have:
Snazzy > Widgets > Blue > Squared
Where we have the conflict is in the instances of "Snazzy". From a category perspective, we direct customers down to the Snazzy Widgets page at /snazzy-widgets/ (as it's a filter). But from a brand perspective, we direct to the Snazzy brand page at /snazzy/. This means we have two sets of links with the anchor text of "Snazzy" that are going to two completely different pages.
Repeat this across a variety of categories, and you have many instances of "Snazzy" all pointing to different Snazzy-related pages, but not to the Snazzy brand page (/snazzy/, /snazzy-widgets/, /snazzy-whatsits/, etc).
So what's the best way to make sure we communicate the right information to the search engines, while still keeping the customer's browsing experience intact and enjoyable?
Thanks!

We've had the same problem on one of our client's sites and our solution was to optimize only one of them and change the anchor text for the other.
I wonder if you could achieve the same result by nofollowing the links to the page that is not for search engines. Would nofollowing an internal link essentially cancel out the anchor text, allowing users to experience the site without messing up SEO?

You could also look into using the new HTML5
<nav>tag. This tells the crawlers that it is specifically a navigation block so it can distinguish the more valuable content from an SEO perspective from the crawler important nav sections. Basically it seems like then the order wouldn't matter as much because you are telling the SEO side of the search engine that it is just navigation.</nav>

Hi Josh,
We're going through some of the older unanswered questions and seeing if people still have questions or if they've gone ahead and implemented something and have any lessons to share with us. Can you give an update, or mark your question as answered?
Thanks!

I believe that it's hard to balance SEO with user experiance.
One thing to keep in mind is the title tag and anchor text.
Make sure that no two pages in your root domain are targetting the same keyword in the title and anchor text. This strategy should make it easier for the search engine to determine which keywords your should be ranking on.

I would create navigation links that put each brand page just one click away from the root domain. Make the anchor text of each link the brand name and have it point to the brand page. This way the brand pages are higher up in your site architecture and hierarchy and should clue Google into which page is most important for the term Snazzy.
Having deep links on very low level pages with links that have Snazzy for anchor text will not influence a search engine as much as links on your home page and in the site's navigation.

Ranking Riddle: Too many anchor text links, or not enough of the right ones???
This question is about one of my ecommerce sites (www.BestDryingRack.com) which is ranking really well for one of it's money words, and not at all for the other. See the attached screenshot for a quick overview of the riddle we are facing.... Looking at the "Anchor Text" tab in my MOZ Campaign or in Open Site Explorer would lead you to think that I have WAY too many links with my #1 money phrase. (clothes drying rack, or laundry drying rack, as they are synonyms). And since my product page doesn't rank at all for that keyword, that's what I thought too. (My home page does show up on page 3 or 4 when Googling clothes drying rack) On the other hand, my #2 money phrase (umbrella clothesline, or outdoor umbrella clothesline) has it's product page ranking quite well in the middle of the first page of Google results. Digging deeper into the links spreadsheet from Open Site Explorer shows that most of the links are NOFOLLOW (which means they don't really count, right?) As the screenshot shows, here is the breakdown of links that count: FOLLOW links with Brand and URL anchor text totals 17 FOLLOW links with #1 money phrase anchor text totals 10, with only 1 to proper product page FOLLOW links with #2 money phrase anchor text totals 3, with all 3 to proper product page So the riddle is... Can we improve the ranking of the #1 money phrase by just getting a small number of matching anchor text links to the proper page? (making it like #2's situation) Or do we also need to get rid of some of the 9 links with the #1 anchor text that are pointing to the home page? (since the home is outranking the proper product page for this phrase) BDR-anchors-040614.jpg

Our anchor-text profile is natural, but looks spammy, what to do?
We are a site with about 12 directories, each one in a sub-folder and previously had their own URL which we merged together for increased branding efforts. When I was analyzing our anchor-text profile of our study abroad directory, it seems that the anchor-text profile is heavy on your key keywords, such as 'Study Abroad' and then some branded. When I say heavy, I am talking 88% are 'study abroad'; followed by 4% are branded, and 2% are branded the old URL that is 301'd to the new subfolder. We have never bought links nor have we really had a strong link building strategy. I am currently thinking of disavowing the links with low DA and are part of the heavily used (study abroad) keywords. Is this a good idea? What should we do to show that these are natural links?

Anchor text internal links
Hello, I read about a practice (also suggested by EasyWP SEO plugin) whereby I should place on my current page (call it page A) an internal link to another page (call it page B) using as anchor text the keywords I want page A to rank for. I dont really understand this and it is a cause of great confusion in my head... Can someone explain this to me and why this would be good practice? I would have thought that having as anchor text to page B a keyword I want page A to rank well for would steal juice from page A and give it to page B? Or am I missing something else? Thanks !

Is bold text anchor link worth the higher price tag in directory listing?
Does it make a difference with Google if anchor link text is bold? The niche directory is offering regular lifetime listing for $199 (actual page pr 6) or bold for $349 (same page, same position). Also bold link has option of including email address. Does email address have any effect on SEO? Seems like a bad deal for bold, isn't it?

Vary Anchor Text for your internal links?
Something I had been pondering with all the new updates and signals Google is looking at, and also considering the fact that many website's overdo internal linking and almost everyone uses exact match anchor text for it. So my question is - is it effect or counter-effective to vary your anchor text for internal links? If you think its effective, what is a reasonable proportion for exact anchor text match to varied ones.
