Any input / pointers for my upcoming Ecommerce move?
-
I posted this as a reply on my other question, but never got another responce...
I am basically moving ecommerce platforms to answer your question. I am keep the same domain (www.stbands.com). If you want to get even more specific i am moving from storesonline to corecommerce. Here's some more info:
- All meta tags, URLS, content is virtually going to be the same except my product pages and normal pages will end with .html, however my category pages will still be /categoryname (like a directory).
- My category URLS seem to build in a mod re-write fashion, which I hear is better for SEO (like /sweatbands/head-sweatbands/).
- I have set all my pages to use the rel=cananical tag, so if you are on the category /sweatbands/head-sweatbands/ it cananicals back to /head-sweatbands
- The images are changing names as I upload them on a product because it auto creates new sizes. This differs from our old host and may affect our vertical image rankings. Should I 301 the image URLS?
- I am keeping the www. in my domain name, as opposed to just domain.com to keep everything the same.
- CoreCommerce automatically seems to make my products uppercase in the URL as they are in the title, but the url works both lowercase and uppercase so its not case sensitive.
This is just an overview of some things I think I have most of my bases covered, but i'm aiming for a april 1st launch / move for the new site. Do you guys have any other pointers / suggestions?
-
James,
Thank you for your recommendation. Appreciate it.
-
I completely understand. But this is not good practice. rel=canonical is a band-aid, but I would definately try to 301 to that lowercase url if you can. Seriously.
-
It is the same product, there isn't multiple products. So the user can access the same product by going to any of the following::
/Levi-Blue-Jeans, /levi-blue-jeans, /LeVi-bLuE-JeAnS, or whatever,
But the main version is /Levi-Blue-Jeans. Just to re-inforce, this ins't going to a different page - its the same product. So basically my URLs are not case sensitive, but are produced as the product title, which uses some uppercase letters.
James,
I have the rel=cananical tag on all my product pages linking to the lowercase, exact version of the url.
-
please explain,
user can access http://www.domain.com/Product-Describer-Keyword.html and http://www.domain.com/product-describer-keyword.html ? if yes then you have a duplicate content issue, just to let you know that Google is smart to picking up the Url that is used by the CMS, but when you start getting links to the one not used by CMS then you have an issue .
-
if you can access the same page using multiple URL's this is BAD - you MUST 301 redirect all requests to a single URL - pick lowercase or whatever, but do not leave it as-is. It only takes one mistake on internal linking or a bad inbound link and you'll get all these indexed..
-
James,
My URLS work for both lower case and uppercase. So the CMS spits out a product URL like this:
www.domain.com/Product-Describer-Keyword.html
but if the customer were to goto /product-describer-keyword.html or /Product-describer-keyword it also works automatically (without me manually doing a 301)
So can i assume this is build in?
-
if any URL's work for upper and lower case, make sure you 301 one to the other. I recommend using lowercase, so redirect all upper or mixed case to all lower case.
oh, and dont forget sitemaps..
-
Wissam,
Thank you
I need to work on my Bing Feed... Anyone else have any pointers?
-
I have input and pointers
- Data Feeds for your products( Google/ Bing)
- Advise product URLs and basically all urs are lower case ( long term)
- dnt 301 image urls, but make sure they have Alt tags
- I would advise social Integrations (facebook Likes)

Spam Score 8/17 with no inbound links. Any hints ?
Hi everyone, One of my client's website has a 8/17 Spam Score. (Domain Authority 18) Thing is, he has 0 inbound links (using Open site explorer) but he has 5 referring domains (when using Majestic). No error messages whatsoever in his Search Console. My questions are : what could explain that 8 Spam Score ? what can I do to lower that spam score (except disavow links in GWT) ? Thanks!

SEO / Word Press feature
We are wanting to refresh old posts on our blog and schedule them to get “republished” to the home page of our blog on a future date. However, when we edit the “Published” settings date and set it to a future date, the post gets removed from the blog and put back into a “Scheduled” status. Many of these posts are “evergreen” and bringing in traffic so we don’t want to have them get removed from our site. So to recap, we need the ability to be able to reschedule already published posts to get “re-published” back on our home page without having them get removed from the site. Does anyone know of a plugin or solution to this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Moving to New Domain - Ranking impact
I understand that when migrating to a new site, even if done perfectly (page level 301s etc) that rankings will drop in the short term and each site will be impacted differently. I picked up the following comment and was wanting to get a few experts thoughts on whether I can quote this to my client: "In our experience, even when 301's are correctly executed, we see a short term fall back (7-30) days and then about a 90% carry through after that period for about 90 days and then back to full strength. "

Hello Moz Community, My developer has added this to my robots.txt file: Disallow: /404/ Is this considered good practice in the world of SEO? Would you do it with your clients? I feel he has great development knowledge but isn't too well versed in SEO. Thank you in advanced, Nico.

Setting title tag with javascript/jquery
Hi there, I'm looking for some advice. I've recently implemented a few jQuery functions which gets specific content from the page and then sets the title and description. See working example here. It seems to work fine but my question I have is whether Google bots can read it and whether it might actually hinder my SEO efforts? Any advice would be really appreciated! Peter

Best way to create a shareable dynamic infographic - Embed / Iframe / other?
Hi all, After searching around, there doesn't seem to be any clear agreement in the SEO community of the best way to implement a shareable dynamic infographic for other people to put into their site. i.e. That will pass credit for the links to the original site. Consider the following example for the web application that we are putting the finishing touches on: The underlying site has a number of content pages that we want to rank for. We have created a number of infogrpahics showing data overlayed on top of a google map. The data continuously changes and there are javascript files that have to load in order to achieve the interactivity. There is one infographic per page on our site and there is a link at the bottom of the infographic that deep links back to each specific page on our site. What is the ideal way to implement this infographic so that the maximum SEO value is passed back to our site through the links? In our development version we have copied the youtube approach implemented this as an iframe. e.g. <iframe height="360" width="640" src="http://www.tbd.com/embed/golf" frameborder="0"></iframe>. The link at the bottom of that then links to http://www.tbd.com/golf This is the same approach that Youtube uses, however I'm nervous that the value of the link wont pass from the sites that are using the infographic. Should we do this as an embed object instead, or some other method? Thanks in advance for your help. James

Moving a blog from unique domain to root /blog/ but on 2 different servers? HELP!
I have a main site hosted on one server, I have the blog hosted on another server - BOTH of which my team has FULL control over. I ultimately want the blog to reside on the root domain: www.mysite.com/blog/ My network team is saying "DNS will not allow this to happen, the resolution will ultimately have to be on blog.website.com" Has anyone out there done this? Is it even possible? HELP!

What do you do about links to constantly moving pages?
One of the sites I work for is an employment site, they have a job database and the job pages tend to get links. The problem is that every time one of these jobs is filled, the job page goes away. What should I do to keep the value from these links?
