Avoiding duplicate content/same pages
-
hi I have been checking through all the Q and A but i i'm still not sure how you get http://www.domain.co.uk/index.html to be just http://www.domain.co.uk/?
Do you add canonical to the index page to point to the page you prefer and then add a 301 redirect?
thanks

Hi Challen,
The following code should remove all index.html from any page you go to but I recommend you get someone who is comfortable working with .htaccess files since you can do some damage if you don't do thing correct. Plus not all code in .htaccess files works the same on every server. So if the code in the other few answer doesn't work and neither does mine, it may be something to do with your host and you may need to check with them.
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} /index.html\ HTTP [NC]
RewriteRule (.*)index.html$ /$1 [R=301,L]Casey
-
hey no it didnt help as the two answers seem to be different.
is this right?
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.html -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.html -
Did the .htaccess information answer your question, or do you still need some more help? I don't know your domain, so it's hard to know if you were able to get it implemented. =]
-
No it is not necessary. I like to add it just in case the .htaccess rules break at any time (e.g. when something else gets updated)
-
I don't think he will need the rel canonical as long as the proper redirect code is in place.
Thoughts??
-
Here is the code. Please add this to your .htaccess file. This will remove both index.php and www/non www canonicalization.
RewriteEngine onRewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.co.uk [NC] RewriteRule (.*) http://www.domain.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]
RewriteEngine OnRewriteBase /RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index.php\ HTTP/RewriteRule ^index.php$ http://www.domain.co.uk/ [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
-
Yeah, add a rel="canonical" to show what page you want (e.g. www.domain.co.uk") and then setup your .htaccess like:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.(htm|html|php) http://www.domain.co.uk/ [R=301,L]

Added 301 redirects, pages still earning duplicate content warning
We recently added a number of 301 redirects for duplicate content pages, but even with this addition they are still showing up as duplicate content. Am I missing something here? Or is this a duplicate content warning I should ignore?

Redirect of https:// to http:// without SSL. Possible or not?!
Good afternoon, smart dudes : ) I am here to ask for your help. I posted this question on google help forum and stackoverflow, but looks like people do not know the correct answer... QUESTION: We used to have a secured site, but recently purchased a separate reservation software that provides SSL (takes clients to a separate secured website) where they can fill out the reservation form. We cancelled our SSL (just think its a waste to pay $100 for securing plain text). Now i have so many links pointing to our secured site and i have no idea how to fix it! How do i redirect https://www.mysite.comto http://www.mysite.com.Also would like to mention that i already have redirect from non www to www domain (not sure if that matters): RewriteEngine onRewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mysite.com$ [NC]RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L]As i already mentioned....we do not have SSL!!!! None of those 301 redirect codes i found online work (you have to have SSL for the site to be redirected from https to http | currently i get an error - can't establish a secured connection to the server ). Is there anything i can do???? Or do i have to purchase SSL again?

Google showing https:// page in search results but directing to http:// page
We're a bit confused as to why Google shows a secure page https:// URL in the results for some of our pages. This includes our homepage. But when you click through it isn't taking you to the https:// page, just the normal unsecured page. This isn't happening for all of our results, most of our deeper content results are not showing as https://. I thought this might have something to do with Google conducting searches behind secure pages now, but this problem doesn't seem to affect other sites and our competitors. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how we get around it?

Is this duplicate content when there is a link back to the original content?
Hello, My question is: Is it duplicate content when there is a link back to the original content? For example, here is the original page: http://www.saugstrup.org/en-ny-content-marketing-case-infografik/. But that same content can be found here: http://www.kommunikationsforum.dk/anders-saugstrup/blog/en-ny-content-marketing-case-til-dig, but there is a link back to the original content. Is it still duplicate content? Thanks in advance.

How do I deal with Duplicate content?
Hi, I'm trying SEOMOZ and its saying that i've got loads of duplicate content. We provide phone numbers for cities all over the world, so have pages like this... https://www.keshercommunications.com/Romaniavoipnumbers.html https://www.keshercommunications.com/Icelandvoipnumbers.html etc etc. One for every country. The question is, how do I create pages for each one without it showing up as duplicate content? Each page is generated by the server, but Its impossible to write unique text for each one. Also, the competition seem to have done the same but google is listing all their pages when you search for 'DID Numbers. Look for DIDWW or MyDivert.

A problem with duplicate content
I'm kind of new at this. My crawl anaylsis says that I have a problem with duplicate content. I set the site up so that web sections appear in a folder with an index page as a landing page for that section. The URL would look like: www.myweb.com/section/index.php The crawl analysis says that both that URL and its root: www.myweb.com/section/ have been indexed. So I appear to have a situation where the page has been indexed twice and is a duplicate of itself. What can I do to remedy this? And, what steps should i take to get the pages re-indexed so that this type of duplication is avoided? I hope this makes sense! Any help gratefully received. Iain
