Two basic questions re. Crawl Diagnostic results
-
I'm a novice...I've just run my crawl diagnostics and I wonder how important is it to a) Have meta-descriptions on every page, b) Have all titles less than 70 characters?
Thanks in advance. Dan.

Dan,
the meta description is your chance to pitch to your customer and nothing more. It is entirely possible to throw away the benefit a #1 ranking can give you in click through if you meta description lets you down.
Also for me it is very important to keep within the 70 characters limit for the page title as having overly long titles can not only not read correctly in the search results but you may be diluting your affectiveness on targeting a page for a certain topic both to the user and the SE's

Thanks both of you, that definitely helps me. Dan.

Meta-descriptions are an opportunity for you to instruct the SE's what your page is about specifically. If you leave it blank - they will extract an excerpt that they think applies to the page. Whilst this is ok, it might not be exactly what you want to display on the SERPS.
Use the meta descriptions to make the most of the SERPS page, if you page is about blue widget investment - then your description should have text that is relevant to that term, and contain text that includes or is at least similar to the term - if it is a large page and you leave the field blank - the SE's can pull in a snippet of an entirely different part of the page that isn't relevant at all.
As for titles - If you have old pages that have long titles it can be a bit of a drag redoing them - but if you are continually producing content I would suggest restricting to sub 70 characters from here on from an "adhering to best practices" point of view.

In terms of pure SEO Meta Descriptions will have no effect on your rankings. But they are potentially your first chance of presenting your content to users convincing them to come to your site, so in that respect they are important. Search engines will use page content as a meta description if there isn't one and that can be fine, but it isn't always what you want.
Titles are a little more tricky, if you have keywords beyond those 70 characters they are unlikely to be "read" by the spiders, and that is less than ideal, so it's important to try to say what you need within that 70 character limit.

520 Error from crawl report with Cloudflare
I am getting a lot of 520 Server Error in crawl reports. I see this is related to Cloudflare. We know 520 is Cloudflare so maybe the Moz team can change this from "unknown" to "Cloudflare 520". Perhaps the Moz team can update the "how to fix" section in the reporting, if they have some possible suggestions on how to avoid seeing these in the report of if there is a real issue that needs to be addressed. At this point I don't know. There must be a solution that Moz can provide like a setting in Cloudflare that will permit the Rogerbot if Cloudflare is blocking it because it does not like its behavior or something. It could be that Rogerbot is crawling my site on a bad day or at a time when we were deploying a massive site change. If I know when my site will be down can I pause Rogerbot? I found this https://developers.cloudflare.com/support/troubleshooting/general-troubleshooting/troubleshooting-crawl-errors/

Any crawl issues with TLS 1.3?
Not a techie here...maybe this is to be expected, but ever since one of my client sites has switched to TLS 1.3, I've had a couple of crawl issues and other hiccups. First, I noticed that I can't use HTTPSTATUS.io any more...it renders an error message for URLs on the site in question. I wrote to their support desk and they said they haven't updated to 1.3 yet. Bummer, because I loved httpstatus.io's functionality, esp. getting bulk reports. Also, my Moz campaign crawls were failing. We are setting up a robots.txt directive to allow rogerbot (and the other bot), and will see if that works. These fails are consistent with the date we switched to 1.3, and some testing confirmed it. Anyone else seeing these types of issues, and can suggest any workarounds, solves, hacks to make my life easier? (including an alternative to httpstatus.io...I have and use screaming frog...not as slick, I'm afraid!) Do you think there was a configuration error with the client's TLS 1.3 upgrade, or maybe they're using a problematic/older version of 1.3?? Thanks -

Increase in Crawl Errors
I had a problem with a lot of crawl errors (on Google Search Console) a while back, due to the removal of a shopping cart. I thought I'd dealt with this & Google seemed to agree (see attached pic), but now they're all back with a vengeance! The crawl errors are all the old shop pages that I thought I'd made clear weren't there anymore. The sitemaps (using Yoast on Wordpress to generate these) all updated 16 Aug but the increase didn't happen till 18-20. How do I make it clear to Google that these pages are gone forever? Two Sites - One Domain
I just want to be sure, but if I install a Wordpress blog in a subfolder of a HTML site, Google will see that as one site, not two different sites, correct? Even if there is two index files?

Crawling a subfolder with a dev site
I am trying to set up a campaign where I am crawling a subfolder of our main site where I have dev version of the new site. However, even though the new site resolves and I have included the full resolving URL but the crawl results come back saying that only one page has been crawled. The site has had a protected block on it for a period of time but this has now been removed. Any ideas? Thanks Nick

Windows IIS 7 Redirect Question
I want to redirect the following 4 pages to the home page: http://www.phbalancedpool.com/pool-repair/pool_repair_arizona.html http://www.phbalancedpool.com/About%20Pool%20Cleaning%20Arizona/About_Page_Pool_Cleaning_Arizona.html http://www.phbalancedpool.com/specials/Pool%20Cleaning%20and%20Pool%20Repair%20Specials.html http://www.phbalancedpool.com/service-areas-in-arizona/Chandler_Gilbert_Mesa_Queen%20Creek_San%20Tan%20Valley.html This is what I am currently using for my Web.config file: <configuration></configuration> <match url=".*"></match> <add input="{HTTP_HOST}" pattern="^phbalancedpool.com$"></add> <action type="Redirect" url="http://www.phbalancedpool.com/{R:0}" <="" span="">redirectType="Permanent" /></action> <location path="pool-repair/pool_repair_arizona.html"></location> <location path="About%20Pool%20Cleaning%20Arizona/About_Page_Pool_Cleaning_Arizona.html"></location> <location path="specials/Pool%20Cleaning%20and%20Pool%20Repair%20Specials.html"></location> <location path="service-areas-in-arizona/Chandler_Gilbert_Mesa_Queen%20Creek_San%20Tan%20Valley.html"></location> Only the first one is actually redirecting and I can't figure out why. What do I need to do to fix this?

Merging two sites into one
I have two websites, www.joecline.com and www.affinityproperties.com. Originally, I wanted joecline.com to be focused on west austin only. I now realize that I only have time to really handle the promotion of one site. I'm wondering SEOwise, which url would be better to keep. I would consolidate all content on one site and 301 the migrated site to the new URLs in the domain which I would keep. Any ideas would be great. Thanks Joe
