Google Places - Client showed up before, now does not
-
This is a strange one, and I hope a few local experts are out there. My client basically has one major competitor in the market. The competitor is closer to downtown and he is out about 27 miles. A couple of months ago, if you searched on "biplane rides in atlanta" the places map in the SERPS would show two - my client and his competitor. Now, the initial local in-line serp just shows his competitor, zoomed in.
If go to Google Maps and type in the same search, he is listed, but you first have to click show more results. Then, he's listed twice - one his airport address (which is the real one) and one his business registered address (his house).
How would I go about straightening this out? My client is #1 in the natural SERPS, it's just this local thing drives us crazy.
If anyone can figure this out, you may walk away with a biplane ride next time you're in Atlanta!
Thanks,
Charles

In addition to reporting the duplicate, you can claim it (if you have access to the phone number listed or the address) and then deactivate it. This is much faster.
Get reviews (from real customers) as David mentioned above, go after and correct citations, and make sure you're on all the popular review sites like Yelp. It would be great if you also had reviews on the review sites as well.

David,
That's great advice. I will put the addy in the footer and also in h-card format. Great suggestion. I also submitted a problem form for the duplicate that shows up in MAPs. Who knows if that will get some action or not...
Thanks,
Charles

This same issue has baffled me many times. The main suggestion that I have is to get some reviews.
You may also want to make sure that the address in places matches exactly the address on the website and any other websites the business is listed on. If possible get the address on their website in hCard format.

(Need helps here!) Can homepage and other internal pages (services) rank high together on Google?
Hi Moz community, Recently I am working on our website's SEO. Our company is a marketing agency. We provide general marketing services and also web design. Here is the content of our homepage and internal pages (specific services). Homepage (marketing agency) Internal page #1 (XXX marketing service) Internal page #2 (YYY marketing service) Internal page #3 (web design) I suggest to my supervisor that we could make some improvement and optimize different keywords for these 4 pages, respectively (homepage, internal page #1 #2 #3). However, my supervisor holds a different point of view that homepage and internal page#3 cannot rank both high for their own keywords because web design is not as related to marketing. So I did some research and look for some top-ranking marketing agency guys who also offer web design. I found their internal pages about web design service rank pretty bad for their own web-design-related keywords. Here are my thoughts and guess (please correct me if I am wrong): Google takes everything into account and deems web design to be kind of irrelevant content to the website, so the internal page for web design will not rank high. The internal page has so much lower power than the homepage so it got outranked by the guys whose homepages are all about web design and development. My question is: In above case, can homepage and other internal pages (our services) all rank high together for their own keywords? I know what I wrote is kind of confusing...But I really need help here and want to solve this problem badly. Really appreciate any help!! Thank you in advance! Best, Raymond

Why do some sites perform great but show no data on the tool bar?
Hey everyone, Been a paid member for 3 days and this is my first time posting 🙂 I have a quick question about competitive analysis with the MozBar. I do not want to point out the exact website (unless that is something cool to do on this forum), but there is a site ranking for a single keyword in the local 7 pack in slot one, which is also slot one for the SERP entirely. When I go to look at the page in more detail, the MozBar is showing no DA, PA, anything at all, and the Open Site Explorer is showing no links internal or external. I know that the page has to have at least some of these elements populated in order to be ranking for a term this competitive, so why is the bar not showing anything? The bar works GREAT on other sites below this one. Thanks for any help!

How do I find my client's real competition?
A recently acquired client keeps insisting that his major competitors are online fashion magazines, fashion news sites and insider bloggers but the site he owns is basically a fashion encyclopedia. It contains facts and catalogues and even a dictionary of fashion concepts. According to me, these latter are his benchmarks and not his competition His major competitors, according to me. are people competing on the first SERP pages for terms like "fashion history", "fashion icons", "fashion biographies", etc. Am I right? How do I convince him that these are his real competition. This is really going to determine the direction of my keyword research.

Image only site on top of Google
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to rank in Google for 'Hid xenon' in the netherlands, but there is one site above all results: http://bit.ly/qlsjne As you can see the site almost has no backlinks, and has not a single word in it's content, all images. it's a keyword only domain, and that's probably the only reason why it's ranking that high, but that means then that i can never get higher then him in Google because of it's domainname? Even when it's such a shitty site? Thank you, regards yannick

Sometime I just don't get Google rankings
We currently rate #10 on google.com.au on Modern Cloth Nappies and the #4 site is a dead link to a page http://www.modernclothnappies.org/ who's total content is: Index of /
Apache Server at www.modernclothnappies.org Port 80

They have been at that rank for a quiet a while and even the cached version is full of broken links.

It seems Google is quick to jump on low value sites or ones with duplicate content, but what about stale links and sites? Has anyone else had similar experiences of being out ranked by domant or dead sites?

Where are the best places online to build powerful profile pages
So on SEOmoz you can create a profile page with followed links (after 200 points), just as you can do on Google Profiles. I'd like to build a strong backlink profile which features some of these highest links that my competitors will not have the time or effort to do. I'm working hard to answer questions on SEOmoz and to be a helpful part of the community, and have published some Google Knols for the Google profile building. My question is; are there any other sites that allow the same type of responsible profile building, preferably SEO related as this is my area of expertise. Thanks Aaron Solar Monster Ltd
