Domain migration strategy
-
Imagine you have a large site on an aged and authoritative domain.
For commercial reasons the site has to be moved to a new domain, and in the process is going to be revamped significantly. Not an ideal starting scenario obviously to be biting off so much all at once, but unavoidable.
The plan is to run the new site in beta for about 4 weeks, giving users the opportunity to play with it and provide feedback. After that there will be a hard cut over with all URLs permanently redirected to the new domain.
The hard cut over is necessary due to business continuity reasons, and real complexity in trying to maintain complex UI and client reporting over multiple domains. Of course we'll endeavour to mitigate the impact of the change by telling G about the change in WMC and ensuring we monitor crawl errors etc etc.
My question is whether we should allow the new site to be indexed during the beta period?
My gut feeling is yes for the following reasons:
-
It's only 4 weeks and until such time as we start redirecting the old site the new domain won't have much whuffie so there's next to no chance the site will ranking for anything much.
-
Give Googlebot a headstart on indexing a lot of URLs so they won't all be new when we cut over the redirects
Is that sound reasoning? Is the duplication during that 4 week beta period likely to have some negative impact that I am underestimating?

I wouldn't sweat it. We left up www.bulwarkpest.com for several months while moving to www.bulwarkpestcontrol.com .... I know that there is some risk in it. But I think Google is pretty understanding of site migrations. Of course I am just a small pest control guy so they may not have ever noticed. Sooo.. take that with a grain of salt.
It's does make it easier to have the other site live so that you can redirect on a per page base and know that it's working. I would rather make sure the redirects are correct and working prior to moving the entire site over. But be warned.. site redirects may not always give you the same authority... research the online Yellow Pages.
-
My opinion of risk goes up much higher if this is a directory vs a site with original content articles.

Hi Aran, thanks for your response.
My thinking has also evolved a bit and I'm now thinking we ought to exclude the new site until we're ready to cut over as @EGOL suggested.
The critical info I didn't mention before was that there is important client ROI and reporting reasons that we need to ensure that the current site continues to perform right up until the cut over, at which point the 301s will be implemented. The cross domain canonical would address the dupliaction, but would also start to depreciate the current pages prematurely.
The thing that I was underestimating before was the negative impression that the new domain would give Google when it suddenly appeared with 1M+ pages of duplicate content plus no real link profile of its own (until we implement the 301s)...all the hallmarks of a scraper.
Better I think to avoid this by excluding the beta until we cut over, and make sure we prep well for that.
-
Agreed, though Charles could use canonical tags to tell Google that the new pages are authoritative. This may take a while to be indexed, but should prevent any detrimental effects with duplicate content.
-
Thanks very much for your thoughts. The root of my uncertainty is indeed the way Google in particular is viewing duplciated content today.
What if I told you that the site was a business directory and that the new site would be a big improvement in terms of on page optimization? By which I mean new/different (and much better) page titles and improved internal linking. I mention this only because the new site won't a direct replicar of the old one. Make a difference?
-
I have no factual data on this... just going with my gut....
Based upon how Google is acting these days I would not take chances with having two copies of the same site in the SERPs for an entire month. I would not want to see any pages on the new site filtered for being duplicates.
Most people don't get a new site indexed and those redirected domains normally go fairly well. So, I would be pleased with that and not take chances.
Safety might be better than going for some unknown gain.

Domain Change Of Address & Sale
Hi Moz community Let's say I have two domains www.domain1.com www.domain2.com domain1 is my main website. Domain 2 was a peripheral side project I was working on. I recently decided to shut it down. So I hooked up the proper 301s and filed a change of address request with Google Webmaster tools. I have had an offer for someone to purchase domain2 - I have absolutely no use for it and would like to sell it. I just want first to figure out that: I can do this without losing any ranking to my main site. I can disassociate this domain from myself and my Company completely. I don't want any of the work we put into it to transfer to the new owner. How can I do this? thanks!

How best to handle partial domain move?
The scenario is this, we have a website eg: ABC.com where the content is in two language folders (en-us and en-gb). We have created a new brand with website XYZ.com for the USA market. Of course, this domain will take a while to rank because it is completely fresh. My question is how best to deactivate the en-us content on the old site to: a) prevent it showing up on Google US
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | esseljay
and
b) pass the US traffic to the new website to boost its rankings I was thinking of removing the en-us pages from ABC.com and using a 410 error page containing a link to XYZ.com
Would it be better to replace the content on en-us instead (with a link)? I'm not keen to use a straight 301 redirect as sometimes we get traffic from other countries to the en-us content. Thanks in advance Mozzers 🙂0 -
Referring domain issues
Our website (blahblah).org has 32 other domains pointing to it all from the same I.P address. These domains including the one in question, were all purchased by the website owner, who has inadvertently created duplicate content and on most of these domains. Some of these referring domains have 301's, some don't - but it appears they have all been de-indexed by Google. I'm somewhat out of my depth here (most of what I've said above has come from an agency who said we should address this before being slapped by Google). However I need to explain to my line manage the actual issues in more detail and the repercussions - any anyone please offer advice please? I'm happy to use the agency, or another - but would like some second opinions if possible?

Sub domain on root domain
Hello,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | dror999
I have a question that I can't find a good answer on.
I have a site, actually a "portal"/ "directory" for service providers.
Now, for start, we opened every service provider own page on our site, but now we get a lot of applications from those providers that thy want sites from their own.
We want to make every service provider his own site, but on sub domain url. ( they don’t mind… its ok for them)
So, my site is www.exaple.com
There site will be: provider.exaple.com
Now I have two questions:
1. can it harm my site in SEO?
2. if one from those sub domain , punished by google because is owner do "black hat seo" , how it will affect the rood domin? It can make the root domain to get punished?
Thanks!!0 -
Redirecting a Page from Domain A to Domain B
We have a page on Domain A, an established and well-ranking website, that would be more appropriate on Domain B, a site that we launched about two years ago. This page ranks well, pulls nice search traffic and has traffic from external links. We would like to move the page and its traffic from Domain A to Domain B using a 301 redirect. Have you ever done this or have you heard of how it has worked for someone else? Thanks!

Multi domain redirect to single domain
Hello, all SEOers. Today, I would like to get some ideas about handling multiple domains. I have a client who bought numerous domains under purpose of prevent abuse of their brand name and at the same time for future uses. This client bought more than 100 domains. Some domains are paused, parked, lived and redirected to other site. I don't worry too much of parked domains and paused domains. However, what I am worrying is that there are about 40 different domains are now redirected to single domain and meta refresh was used for redirections. As far as I know, this can raise red flag for Google. I asked clients to clean up unnecessary domains, yet they want to keep them all. So now I have to figure out how to handle all domains which are redirect to single domain. So far, I came up with following ideas. 1. Build gateway page which shows lists of my client sites and redirect all domains to gateway page. 2. Implement robots.txt file to all different domains 3. Delete the redirects and leave it as parked domains. Could anyone can share other ideas in order to handling current status? Please people, share your ideas for me.

SEO friendlier domain name
Hi, I just have a doubt. I am building a site I want to optimize for the keyword "slot machine gratis". I have bought two domains: slot-machines-gratis.it and slotmachine-gratis.it. Which domain do you recommend that I use to target the keyword "slot machine gratis"? Thank you.
