Url question for seo
-
Would it be beneficial to use url that is a match for my keyword to help with seo, then have my currently url forward to that one so I don't have to change any marketing materials?
I was one of the feedback that I got when doing the on page keyword optimization tool on seo moz.
Thanks
J

No, you would keep MOST of the link juice. You would lose between 1-10% of your link juice with the redirect.

Ryan,
I do have a lot of links pointing at my current url. Would I loose all that link juice if I was to change to a keyword specific url with a .com and forward the old url to that address. That is the main thing I took form you first response as to why this may not be a good idea.
Thank you so much,
J

Not necessarily.
You would need to put time and effort into the web page for the keyword URL. You can't just make a crappy page and then link it to your site. That is called a doorway page. It is a violation of Google's terms and your site can be removed from Google's index for this violation.
If you do create a quality page which targets these keywords, it will rank well because of the domain name, but you lose out on your domain authority. This one page website will never have quality links to build it's page or domain authority.
People are often attracted to the glamor of a key word site ranking at the top of SERPs. What they don't realize is the page ranks so well because the other results are not properly optimized for the same keyword, and/or are low quality pages.
-
It would still be suggested to have a website built on that keyword rich domain and you can link to your main website from this satellite site. It will still stand a good chance ranking high if the domain matches your main target phrase exactly.

Search engines treat extensions equally. A .edu site is not rated higher then a .com site, and a .com isn't seen as better then a .info or any other extension.
The reason a .com is preferred is "brand" awareness of the .com TLD. Think of any major company like McDonalds, Walmart, or Facebook. Add a .com to the name and you have their website. Many people automatically will add a .com to any brand to find their web address.
If you build a site cheap-cars.net, then you can be certain a percentage of your potential customers will wind up on the cheap-cars.com, cheapcars.com and cheapcars.net sites. If those sites are offering a similar product to you, then those potential customers might never make it to your site.
The other consideration is whether you already have an established site, or are you building a new one. With an already established site, it doesn't make sense at this point to move unless you already have challenges with your site name.
-
If I understand your question correctly, you want to know if you should redirect traffic from your established site to a new URL which is a keyword match to help boost your search engine ranking.
If you have an existing site with traffic and links, then I would not move to a keyword site unless it was an absolute perfect match and a .com. Google has clearly indicated they are reconsidering reducing the value of keyword domain matches. You could move and then wind up moving back a short time later.
It seems many are drawn to the glamor of a keyword URL. Yes, it is nice to have but it is only one of 200+ factors used to determine ranking. I would focus your time and effort on improving your site's content rather then chasing the URL.

Toxic URL???
Hi I have a URL that produced page 1, number 1 to 3 for most of our industries top phrases. Then we received a google penalty, (as did several of our competitors on the same day). We were effectively wiped from google. After much disavowing we were allowed back into the search results, this took about 3 months. I have employed the services of a top London SEO company for over a year now and have seen no significant improvement. I believe they are doing there best, however there results are VERY poor. According to the various tools, (searchmetrics, woorank, semrush) to name but a few, our site scores very well, yet we are not getting the results. Page one seems to be full of totally new websites, most of which I have never heard of, and have appeared from nowhere. Should I scrap our URL and put up a completely new one, and put a redirect from the original one? This would be a biggy since our url has been around for 20 years. Thanks for reading. Andy

On-Page Optimization Question
My company sells Blue widgets and we are located in Denver, CO. Keyword research indicates that the the highest volume phrase is "blue widgets for sale in denver co". Should my meta title tag be: Blue Widgets for sale in Denver CO , and my h1 tag be the same? or should they be semantic phrases? Thanks in advance!

One question about the domain choice.
Hi guys, I'm an Italian Web marketing and I'm studying SEO since some moths. First, sorry for my bad english.... 🙂 Second, the question: My Italian blog is going really GREAT in terms of popularity and incomes and know I want to bring it in english language with the help of a professional translator. The choice that I have to take is about the future domain of the english blog. My Italian blog has as url mynameandmysurname.net I don't really like to make the english blog appears like myitalianblogurl.net/english because I think it's a little bit confusing and not professional. I have also thought the idea to make a sub domain like blog.myitalianurl.net. What about the WPML plugin? Do you think it's a great choice? I don't like it because it's confusing and it affect my italian blog. Or maybe is it better to create a new branded blog with different domain? It can be an idea but I think that If I chose this way I will lose all my seo efforts of the last years 😄

SEO for EMD
Hi, I bought ForSaleInAZ.com for my real estate website. Google Keyword Tool estimate 301k local searches for that term. I would like to capitalize on this by building this site with good content. My question to you, besides the search being the URL, what is the best practice to specifically promote the "For Sale In AZ" phrase? Should it be in the Page Title, Meta Description, Content H1 & H2 tags, Image tag? Or, is it being in the URL good enough...so all I have to do is build good content? I understand not to over do it but I could use your advice. Can you please give me some suggestions/ guidelines to follow specifically to my EMD? SEO Expertise Level: I am comfortable and have the decent understanding but, by no means, an expert! Thanks, Carl

Removing old URLs from Google
Hello, I am sure that this question has been asked many times, but I am still not sure what to do about the following: Our site's URL structure has changed a few times in the past few months. Recenty, we have changed our URLs to become more SEO friendly. However, Google has indexed the old URLs as well. To give an example: The following page in our website shows the following URLs in Google Webmaster Tools: Confúcio e Seus Ensinamentos /artigo/68_38/2/as_religioes_iv_confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/14_6132/vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/1_14_6132/vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/_14_6132/Vestibular/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos//aula/ensino/confucio_e_seus_ensinamentos/ The correct URL is the last one. What should I do about the other ones? Almost all the pages in our website have this problem. We have redirected the old URLs to the new ones, but is there anything else we should do? We were asking Google to remove them, but Google has informed us that it has reached the limit. Please advise us on waht we should do. We have removed the old sitemap with the old URLs. What else must we do? Thank you very much.

Geo-targeted content and SEO?
I am wondering, what effect does geo-targeted "cookie cutter" content have on SEO. For example, one might have a list of "Top US Comedians", which appears as "Top UK Comedians" for users from the United Kingdom. The data would be populated with information from a database in both cases, but would be completely different for each region, with the exception of a few words. Is this essentially giving Google's (US-based) crawler different content to users? I know that plenty of sites do it, but is it legitimate? Would it be better to redirect to a unique page, based on location, rather than change the content of one static page? I know what the logical SEO answer is here, but even some of the big players use the "wrong" tactic. I am very interested to hear your thoughts.
