IP Address Of Site
-
Hi there, really new to seo and loving being able to research everything on seo moz. I have a question about the ip address of my site:
I use a company that sells templated real estate websites (I'm a realtor) and I'm noticing all of their websites show as having the same ip address. There are probably 100's of sites on their server targeting the same keywords as I am, would this affect my ranking at all? I'm just considering switching to a Wordpress site with a unique IP address, so I'm curious to find out how the seomoz members would answer this question.
Cheers, Adrian

There are another two points I came across regarding IP addresses:
1. If a site or a bunch of sites on that IP address get banned somehow, it might affect your site
2. If you are targeting a specific geographic location, let's say San Francisco, it's supposedly a good idea to have an IP or server that is located there. It has been awhile since I've read about this so if someone could verify - that would be good.
Also, it is probably a good idea to switch to your own WordPress site hosted on a proper server as opposed to on a shared plan. You'll notice that your site runs much faster.

Thanks Radu, that's the conclusion I came to as well. Thanks for verifying my thought! Adrian

Hello Adrian,
- The idea of having your own IP address (dedicated IP) is not bad.
- Simply because some sites have the same IP to yours, should not be a problem, unless you get links from them or if they are SPAM sites (bad neighborhood)

"My question stems from the discovery that having links from sites with the same IP address is useless, so I'm wondering if there is any advantage to having my site use a unique IP address instead of one that is used for multiple sites (some targeting the same terms as me)."
Links FROM the same IP will not have cumulative value, so if you're not expecting to receive links from those sites, those links will not have the value of their total sum, if that makes sense.
That said, the fact that they're targeting the same keywords will, on one hand, put you in competition with them for the attention of the search engines, but on other hand, will also establish high relevancy for your site to theirs.
Not sure that really answers your question very well, Adrian. Without seeing the big picture, it's difficult to offer much more, I'm afraid.

Nope I mean that there are multiple real estate sites targeting the same geographic terms as me on the same server (ip address). I'm wondering if this will affect my sites ability to rank.

Hello Adrian - I suspect that you may be conflating IP address with URL. The IP address would be something like 123.456.789.123, whereas the URL would be something like http://www.example.com.
Assuming that's the case, it's not uncommon for an expansive site to have one URL, with many folders, such as:
http://example.com/denver/
http://example.com/dallas/
http://example.com/sacramento/is that what you mean?

Non ecommerce site with high DA, being outranked by lower DA sites with ecommerce - help?
I have a website that we look after, up until January this year the rankings were really strong - the site has a much higher domain authority than the competitors, much more links and much more relevant content (all measured with moz's tools). About 6 months ago the rankings started to dive for national search terms. Now one thing ive noticed is that nearly all of the other sites in the search sell products online where we have no such function - could this be correlated - has anyone else experienced this?

Why is this site ranking so well
I just took over an SEO campaign for a company we recently did a website for. The old company created individual landing pages for each city they service, but they didn't have any original content except replacing the city name. We are in the process of creating completely unique content per page. My main issue is that there is a company with no link profile, duplicate content on every page, no social media presence, etc - but consistently ranks for city + fence company The company we are starting to work with is: http://betterdecksandfences.com/ The company that is ranking for everything is: http://www.alcovyfence.com Any ideas?

How did this little site rank #2?
Keyword: "adoption agency" Site: http://www.opendooradoption.org These guys are ranked #2 for this very competitive term in all US regions. They're beating Bethany (and my company) who are orders of magnitude larger in both company size and link profile. Their domain authority is 40, and they have less than 200 links pointing to them with "adoption agency" in the anchor according to OSE. Their on-site is pretty much nonexistent. Does anyone have any theories as to how they accomplished this?

How can a site rank higher when you beat them by A LOT on virtually every SEOMOZ factor?
Any insight into what's driving these results would be appreciated. Another site ranks #6 and we rank #22 on a keyword that scores 67% for "Keyword Difficulty", but we score significantly higher than them on almost every ranking factor including having nearly 10 times more backlinks along with higher PA and DA scores, etc. Here is a comparison from the Keyword Difficulty Tool report. Sites With Duplicate Content Ranking Way Higher
The site I am writing about is easendtorontohomes.com I don't get it. I see that some of my competitors have more inbound links and have been around longer. Their SEOmoz trust etc is also higher. But I don't get how many could possibly be ranking higher since they're sites are all template based site via Web Tech Design and the content is duplicated from one to the other. The other weird thing is that they do everything wrong - they stuff their keywords tag, some of them use the same keywords/meta data on every single page, some of them don't even have meta tags, some of them don't even have a blog with ANY original content. Apart from listings EastEndTorontoHomes.com has TONS of original, well-researched, and keyword rich content. I just don't get it. Is it possible that google has some sort of relationship with that company? Or am I totally missing something? Some of these sites include: tinasmith.ca, mikeclarke.com, teamkassen.com
