Hi everyone! Using the Open Site Explorer tool I can see many of my competitors leave blog comments which (according to the tool) are providing link value to their sites. This seems like something that can easily be used in a black hat sort of way.
My question is this - Is leaving comments on blogs an effective way of generating positive links to my site?

If the links are follow and the sites have high DA, are they valuable?
Of course this is provided that I'm using my real name, picture, and contributing valuable and thoughtful information to the discussion.

Blog comments are not typically thought of as carrying a whole lot of weight by themselves. However, when you're building your overall backlink portfolio it is good to have some variety to your backlinks - some high quality links, plenty of followed links, some no-followed, some in social, some in places like digg etc.
I would certainly comment if you feel you have something to add to the conversation (and you find yourself doing so naturally, not forced - and definitely don't add any comments on fake blogs) but you don't have to go overboard and spend tons of time seeking out lots of blogs just to get some comments in. Leave them as you would in a natural way. They can add some social value and help round out your overall backlink portfolio, but don't do a whole lot by themselves.

You might see the links listed but who says the provide ranking value? Google and other search engines determine their value for rankings. Many of these links are no follow and many of those blogs are probably untrusted or have so few links of their own that the links are worth almost nothing.
My question is this - Is leaving comments on blogs an effective way of generating positive links to my site?
Only if they are followed links and only of those blogs have valuable links from other websites. In my opinion the value of these links is so low that they are not worth going after.

What is the relationship between inbound links and linking domains?
In doing competitor research, there's a specific competitor that has fewer linking domains, but dramatically more inbound links. How do these two relate to each other? I do have a higher domain authority and more internal followed links with them having more internal nofollow and external (both follow and nofollow) links. I'm trying to understand how they can have 3.7k linking domains and 4.8 million inbound links while I have 4.1k linking domains and only 601k inbound links. What really defines an inbound link and what's there relationship between inbound links and linking domains?

How can I estimate annual traffic for this deep link?
I need to estimate the traffic patterns for the last year at a minimum...preferably 2 or 3 years for this deep link: http://www.amazon.com/Boating-Water-Sports-Outdoors/b/ref=sa_menu_btwt?ie=UTF8&node=3421331 I have ran a url comparison in open site explorer against amazon.com but want to put some traffic estimates around this. Is there a tool in moz to do this?

Why would a site with virtually no external links and low authority rank very high?
Hey there: I'm not sure anyone's going to be game to answer this but... I have designed, done on-page optimization for and done ongoing content marketing and linkbuilding for a local fitness site. The site is about nine months old and I am attempting to achieve rank for the keyword "personal trainers in philadelphia." We've made progress; having taken a new site from +100 to 19 in about four or five months worth of content creation and linkbuilding on a very modest budget. I'm not complaining. What has me confused though is that there are one or two sites that are ranking very high for this keyword string with considerably shoddier metrics than our site and I'm wondering how a stock WP theme site with very few inbound links can rank top five for a reasonably competitive keyword? Our site is http://vtrainersinc.com. The site I've noticed that ranks top five and seems to have an inferior SEOMoz profile is bodycrafters.net. Anybody got any ideas as to why these things seem to occur? I have this feeling this site has stumbled upon a magic SEO elixir which I'd like to get my hands on!

Business Directories and Spammy Link Profile
Hi, have been reading a lot about submissions to directories and posting spamming blogs and forums and how they're a bad idea, saw a great post on it by Rand in a white board Friday lecture, the only thing is I've been analysing a company and that appears to be what makes up its entire link profile, all the links point to their home page with their primary phrase as the anchor text. Just wondered how a company with some 4k links the majority being follows, hasn't been penalised for what are a really bad set of back links. Should add that this is an insurance company, they're no light weights in their industry but certainly not one of the big boys. Thanks, Lee Example here

Search shows site links, but not hyperlinked?
2 of our competitors on Google have site links show in their results which brings you to that specific page. In our listing we show up with the same results a few spots behind them with our site links visible showing very similar content, but are not actually hyper linked. Is there a way to fix the issue and let people actually be able to click on our site links instead of just reading them?

I'm looking into Linkresearchtools.com for competitive backlink analysis. Already have SEOmoz (obviously) and Majestic. Anyone have any experience with the toolset? If so, what does it do well, what do you like, and where does it fall down? Cheers
