I need some HTACCESS help (Magento)
-
Hi Guys,
I need some help on this htaccess issue in Magneto.
So here is what I am trying to do:
I wanted to change mysite.com/index.php/etc to mysite.com/etc
so I turned on the web friend URLS.
That did that, BUT there are still two versions of every page on the site.
www.mysite.com/etc and mysite.com/index.php/etc
So that isn't good for SEO.
So then I applied a 301 matching redirect, RedirectMatch 301 /index.php/(.*) http://www.mysite.com/$1
That solved that problem.
But now I am not able to log into the admin.
It is mysite.com/index.php/pg45admin. It should redirect to mysite.com/pg45admin but the page just hangs.... It goes into a continuous loop.
I tired using the custom URL and then the site crashed and I had to redo it.
So what do I need to do for this to work?

Oh my goodness Dave,
I just saw your question and then noticed the date you posted!
Do you still need help with your question, or have you resolved the problem? (I really hope so)
If not, let us know.

Yes, that is what I am looking for.

In that case you need the couple lines of htaccess code to redirect any index.php page to it's equivalent. I am not a regex/htaccess pro and do not know the code for it off-hand.

Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the response, but I had already turned on web friendly URLs. All that did was removed the index.php from the URL. Both URL's stlll exist.
Before web friendly URL's it was like this:
mysite.com.index.php/etc/etc
after
Since both URL's exist, I just want to 301 redirect any index.php URL to the URL without it.
I have not found any plugin to do what I am looking to do.

I have no experience with Magneto, but I have always been able to configure friendly URLs on any system.
If I was in your situation I would do the following:
1. rename your htacess file to .htaccess.old (basically this is the same as deleting it but you would still retain a copy)
2. google "Magento friendly URLs" and follow the guides. I found a few:
http://kb.siteground.com/article/Enable_Friendly_URLs_in_Magento.html
At worst, there are a few plugins which do what you are after

Value of domain name for domain authority. Please help to figure out!
I am doing SEO for an appliance repair company. Their company website's domain doesn't have high authority, and I am going to increase that by link earning and content improving. I think a better domain name might also help me out. The current URL contain the word "appliance" but doesn't have "repair" in it. I am thinking a new domain that would contain both keywords will serve better. Could you please share with me your thought on this? Am I in the right direction, or not at all? I know Google penalizes mirror sites since this they are considered as duplicated content. I'll upload my content to the new domain and make the old one point to that new URL. I am wondering if canonical might help? Or 301 redirect will be a better solution? Any advise would be highly appreciated! Thank you!

Is it needed to use http:// or not?
Hi, When doing link building and getting my URL to other websites, is it necessary that the other websites include http:// before the domain? Example: I want to increase the number of links to my site www.example.com . When I ask other websites to add a link to my site, should I ask them to use http://www.example.com or is www.example.com enough (without http://)? Or it really does not matter? Thanks in advance, Sam

.htaccess redirects
I've done some research but can't find a good answer to this question. Here's my situation: Site redirects from example.com to www.example.com just fine. However, it doesn't work so well for internal pages. My site incorrectly redirects (non-www) example.com/page2 to www.example.com when it should instead go to www.example.com/page2 So I need a method to redirect non-www internal pages to www versions. Currently I have this in my .htaccess - do I need to modify the rules? RewriteEngine on

Need for a modified meta-description every page for paginated content?
I'm currently working on a site, where there url structure which is something like: www.domain.com/catagory?page=4. With ~15 results per page. The pages all canonical to www.domain.com/catagory, with rel next and rel prev to www.domain.com/catagory?page=5 and www.domain.com/catagory?page=3 Webmaster tools flags these all as duplicate meta descriptions, So I wondered if there is value in appending the page number to the end of the description, (as we have with the title for the same reason) or if I am using a sub-optimal url structure. Any advice?

RegEx help needed for robots.txt potential conflict
I've created a robots.txt file for a new Magento install and used an existing site-map that was on the Magento help forums but the trouble is I can't decipher something. It seems that I am allowing and disallowing access to the same expression for pagination. My robots.txt file (and a lot of other Magento site-maps it seems) includes both: Allow: /*?p= and Disallow: /?p=& I've searched for help on RegEx and I can't see what "&" does but it seems to me that I'm allowing crawler access to all pagination URLs, but then possibly disallowing access to all pagination URLs that include anything other than just the page number? I've looked at several resources and there is practically no reference to what "&" does... Can anyone shed any light on this, to ensure I am allowing suitable access to a shop? Thanks in advance for any assistance
