Do crawl reports see canonical tags?
-
Greetings,
I just redesigned my site, www.funderstanding.com, and have the old site pointing to the new site via canonical URLs.
I had a new crawl test run and it showed a large amount of duplicate content. Does the SEO Moz crawl tool validate canonical urls and adjusts the duplicate content count or is this note considered?
FYI, I sent from no duplicate content to having 865 errors since the redesign went up so that seems suspicious. I would think though that assuming the canonical tag were used properly, and I hope it is?, that this would not be a problem??
All help with this is most appreciated.
Eric

Thanks! Is there a good way for me to check the whole site to identify a problem? In other words, if one is a problem, I should assume that others could be a problem. What is the best way to check? Thank you so much! I am not quite sure what to do and help is most appreciated. Eric

Googles view is:
301 when you can and canonical when you do not have direct server access to do a 301. But, I would and do, have both to ensure both case and endings are correct for the landing page. i.e. someone might tweet http://www.funderstanding.com/V2/Coaster instead of the lowercase version and google will report dupe content if it is not dealt with.

<link href="http://www.funderstanding.com/content" rel="canonical"> is the only one that does not pint to the old site from those you mentioned. With links from that page it may find enough of the old site to produce the dupes.
You can fix it and then request a crawl

Not sure what you mean? I thought 301s were to be avoided for SEO reasons when using canonicals?
-
A 301 Redirect removed any duplicate content errors that were showing in the crawl report, maybe redirecting the old site to the new site this way would help.

Thank you for the quick reply!
Assuming this is what you are looking for here are a few of the URLs on the old site:
http://www.funderstanding.com/coaster
http://www.funderstanding.com/content
http://www.funderstanding.com/category/content/theories
http://www.funderstanding.com/content/right-brain-vs-left-brain
http://www.funderstanding.com/content/behaviorism
Does that help?

Are the canonicals in the old site pointing to the new site? The new site one looks fine, I cannot see any links to the olds site to check.
standarised endings \ - Ok
https: rejected - OK
url match canonical and sitemap - Ok
It seems very odd.

Crawl Diagnostics - Historical Summary
As we've been fixing errors on our website, the crawl diagnostic graphs have been showing great results (top left to bottom right for errors). The problem is the graphs themselves aren't very pretty. I can't use them in my internal reports (all internal reports are standardised colours/formats). Is there anyway of exporting the top level summary with historic data so the graphs can be recreated in company colours? I don't want the detailed CSV breakdown of what errors occurred, but rather than on X date there were Y errors, the next month Z errors and so forth. The data must already be in the SEOMoz system in order to create the graphs themselves - I was hoping this can be made available to us if it isn't already? Does anyone know if there is already a way of doing this? I've tried to 'inspect element' and find the underlying data in the source code but to no avail, and can't see any exports that would do this. Thanks in advance Dean

Does crawling help in optimisation.?
the website is as it was last week. no optimisation from my side for 10 days now. i was ranked 5 with my keyword not much competition there. however 2 days ago i registrred at seomoz and created a campaign for my website with my keywords that were ranked 5 in search. today i see that my rank has gone up to 2. i have nt done any optimisation neither have ii created any backlinks. so how and why did i climb up? i just created a campaign and let seomoz crawl my website for 2days. am i to assume seomoz crawl optimises website? if that is the case then can i create a campaign crawl pages, climb up in searches, delete the campaign after a week, create it again crawl pages and climb up and so on ? please advise?

Why aren't canonical tags reducing duplicate page title/content?
We have canonical tags set up for a feature page on one of our sites. This site has an image gallery controlled by javascript. To aid the user experience the image can also be specified by a URL parameter (the javascript also uses this URL to fetch the images). The SEOMoz report complains that the links to these images have duplicate page titles and content. To try and combat this we set canonical tags to point only to the original page, without the slideshow parameter. e.g. http://www.example.com/feature-page/ http://www.example.com/feature-page/?slideshow=1 -> canonical tag set to http://www.example.com/feature-page/ http://www.example.com/feature-page/?slideshow=2 -> canonical tag set to http://www.example.com/feature-page/ The latest SEOMoz report has come back and the errors still exist. What can we do to remove these error messages? Thanks

Is it possible to see rankings on a graph?
Would it be possible to display Ranking data on a graph to show progress over a period of time? It would be great to be able to show a client how a certain keyword has improved over a time period.
