Explain Competitive Link Analysis

Hi all...bit of a newbie into the SEO world! So excuse me if this question makes me sound simple
Basically we have recently had a link analysis done on our site but I'm finding it a little bit difficuilt to actually understand what it all means.
What are followed and nofollowed links? What is the sort of ratio needed between the two for best results.
And my next question being what are followed linking root domains and nofollowed linking root domains?

The ratio of followed vs nofollowed links on a web page is not a ranking factor.
You do want to keep the total number of links offered on a page down to the minimum number required to provide the best user experience. Repetitive links and unused links should be removed. Your page rank flows through your followed links.

So there isn't an amount of follow vs nofollow links ratio that will help increase our rank? I'm assuming the more quality links that we do have though the better...

I will gladly respond to your questions but if I can first point out the Beginner's Guide to SEO is an excellent resource, easy to read and will answer most of your questions.
A followed link is one which you are endorsing or offering in sincerity. An example of a link that I would endorse is the Begginer's Guide to SEO link presented above. I don't make any money or otherwise benefit from your reading the pdf. I am offering the link in a purely helpful manner. All of your internal site links should be followed.
A nofollowed link is one which you are not endorsing. It might be a paid advertisement. You are offering the link but do not necessarily vouch for the product. Another example would be comments on a blog article you publish. You may not know or vouch for the users who are sharing comments so it is common to nofollow those links.
Follow and nofollow are tags which can be applied to web pages or individual links.
The followed/nofollowed linking root domains is a count of the known links to your website or a given page on a website. Those are not instantly updated but otherwise is representative of all the known links from other websites to the site or page you are reviewing.

Duplicate content analysis
Hi all,We have some pages being flagged as duplicates by the google search console. However, we believe the content on these pages is distinctly different (for example, they have completely different search results returned, different headings etc). Surge in spammy links
Hi, Our website www.foodjet.com has recently seen a huge amount of spammy incoming links to non-exisiting URLS:
Technical SEO | | FoodJEtThey all target pages that lead to a 404 and which clearly do not exist on our website. Since they have started to appear our DA has plummeted. I have already disavowed some domains, but more re-appear just as fast. I have also checked if our site has been hacked, which does not seem to be the case. What am I missing? And/or what can I do?

Maintaining link value during site downtime
We are nearly finished rebuilding a client website, but they want to have a "dark launch" period for 4 days prior to the public site launch. During that 4-day period, we will be converting their server, so they want to take down the old site and instead send users a "coming soon" message. Although we have the old site pages set up to 301 for the public launch, I'm concerned that this dark period is going to hurt the link value on the old site pages. During this 4-day period, should we be setting a 503 status code on the old site that automatically serves the "coming soon" message? Or, should all old site pages be temporarily redirected to the "coming soon" landing page? Any other recommendations are appreciated as well.

Site-wide Links
Hey y'all, I know this question has been asked many times before but I wanted to see what your stance was on this particular case. The organisation I work for is a group of 12 companies - each with its own website. On some of the sites we have a link to the other sites within the group on every single page of that site. Our organic search traffic has dropped a bit but not significantly and we haven't received any manual penalties from Google. It's also worth mentioning that the referral traffic for these sites from the other sites I control is quite good and the bounce rate is extremely low. If you were in my shoes would you remove the links, put a nofollow tag on the links or leave the links as they are? Thanks guys 🙂

What is meant by to many on page links
I have just done the report for my site http://www.in2town.co.uk and it says i have 246 on page links but i am not sure how come i have got that many. I know i have a large number of links and in the old days it says that you should keep the links under 100 but now with website speed and the net, people are saying this is no longer listened to. A report i read said that the links should not confuse the reader or put them off, so i am just wondering what your thoughts are on a site with over a 100 links on the home page and also if my site does have to many links what should i do about it. I cannot understand why it is showing 246 when i do not see that many on the page, any advice would be great

Are my Canonical Links set up correctly?
I have Enable Canonical Links (recommended) on my web site. However, I also have THIS checked: Enable full URL for Home Page Canonical Link (include /default.asp) Is it hurting me??? Keep getting dinged on our report card. We are using the Volusion shopping cart software/platform.

If you add a no follow to a time sensitive link, will it get picked up as broken link 404 in WMT report?
We have a client who publishes deals that are time sensitive. Links to the deals expire and so Google's crawlers are picking them up and finding a 404 If I no follow them, will the 404's still get picked up and reported in WMT? The same question applies to SEOMoz Pro.
