Is it valuable for a local business to build links into its Google Place?
-
G'Day All, Almost all of my clients are geo-based small service-based businesses. I've noticed during my research that the google places for our competitors in 3 separate niches (3 different clients) seem to be the dominating results for almost all relevant keyword terms. I'm curious to see if anyone has actively tried to increase the ranking of a google place by building links into it. Is this something that anyone else sees value to for a local small business? I would love to get some thoughts. And for that matter I'm also curious to see if anyone thinks there might be value to optimizing a Facebook Fan Page or Yelp Business page. They all seem to be key drivers of traffic our client websites so I'm wondering how difficult it is to make them rank as opposed to a website. Thanks!

Thanks guys. Very much appreciate the feedback! I'll run a couple of them and see how they go

I feel that linking to the Google places listings from the company website is still something which you can drive benefit from you can also link to the places locations from various 3rd party sites.
Whilst linking to the places account provides benefit, I feel that other factors have more importance such as the number of reviews, the on site text targeting the page, huge number of citations from 3rd party sites, category's also if the domain name is a EMD (exact match domain) it can provide some benefit to the ranking which I have seen.

I have asked this question in the past and generally gotten the answer that it is not useful. I look forward to hearing other peoples opinions on the topic though.
One thing i have noticed in the last couple months with local SEO is that all the sites that really rank, actually really have quite a lot better page/domain/trust rank than the sites that don't rank well. It seems more than ever it is important to have good qaulity, high authority backlinks to your domain, in order to rank will in local. It seems citations are hardly that important at all anymore, but reviews still hold some weight, if you can get them to stick in a believable pattern.

Should I use an informative outbound link when trying to market a service?
Having outbound links seems like a marketing no-no as you don’t want people clicking away from your website. However, if the link provides great information (at the end of your content) that explains and markets a service that you’re offering, is it okay to have that outbound link?

Finding Local SERPs
Good Afternoon Everyone, I am looking into finding a tool that can use different IP addresses for local markets to find what their SERPs look like for searches such as: Cogs in Calgary Cog Installer Miami Cog Repair New York With local IP addresses for that search in that market. Not sure if such a thing exists, but thanks in advance!

Link vs Subdomain Language redirect
Hi all, I'm managing a website that uses a redirect to show different languages to the users. I mean when a user access the site from any country it sees the full domain but when it access it from Italy, France or Germany it goes to domain.com/lang=FR or IT. I see that other sites use a technique to redirect to it.domain.com or fr.domain.com but I have doubts about which one is better. We do an aggressive link building strategy and we have a lot of links to the root domain across the various languages. Is it better to do the link building to the it.domain.com and fr.domain.com, depending on the language source of the link instead of the root? I'm seeing that some of our competitors are doing this but I'm afraid is going to spread the link juice across many subdomains and lose power to the root. Thanks in advance

How much keyword density for Google?
I have several pages on one site which have gone down during the past few months. They keyword density on those pages, which is not unnatural, pleased Google for many years. it still pleases Bing. But Google now seems very picky. Based upon your experience, what is the ideal % keyword density for 2 and 3 word phrases, and should they be left out of alt tags even when proper to put them there? While Google dominates, we do not wish to alienate BIng/Yahoo. It is a huge mystery, and experimentation with more non-keyword-related text has so far not born any fruit. Thank you, GH

External Links Massive Drop
In Google Webmaster Tools I have well over 1000 links. Now I appreciate that this will vary a lot compared to Open Site Explorer but that's showing just 45. Previously, before the last OSE update on the 28th I had 182 links so this is a big drop. My competitors use similar software (vbulletin forum) and have all increased in links and my actual links haven't dropped at all according to Google Wemaster Tools.) My MozRank has dropped a lot, as has the authority and trust. I know this is only a guide but it's very frustrating. My PageRank has also dissapeared (although was only 1 a month or two ago) so really not sure what's going on. Does anyone have any ideas. I haven't done anything that would penalise me in Google, just some tweaking of certain pages to try and help relevance and rankings. Cheers.

Anyone have experience with "Link Research Tools" ?
I'm looking into Linkresearchtools.com for competitive backlink analysis. Already have SEOmoz (obviously) and Majestic. Anyone have any experience with the toolset? If so, what does it do well, what do you like, and where does it fall down? Cheers

In Open Site Explorer, what does it mean when a linking page does not contain any reference to the URl entered?
When running Open Site Explorer on a particular URL, I get a list of linking pages. Many of these pages have a high Page Authority. I am assuming that this is a list of pages that presumably link to the URL I entered. First, is this correct? Next, when I click on an entry in the list I don't see any reference to the URL on the page, even viewing the page source. What does this mean and why is the link in the list?
