Article Marketing
-
Hello,
Our nearest ecommerce competitor has quite a few links from article directories like ezinearticles.com and similar sites.
I know these sites are bottom of the barrel in SEO, but I've been thinking of writing a few 500 word articles and posting them on some of the strongest of these article directories.
Maybe I'll stick to ezinearticles.com since I only like to get links from sites that are going to stick around. What do you think - which of these article directories going to be here for the long term?
Mainly what I'm asking for here is a top 5 list of the best article directories, or perhaps a better article marketing strategy.
I loved that whiteboard friday on Article Marketing. I'm going to watch that again.
Thank you.

Thanks Ryan!

Simple online contact works fine, but it depends on your niche.
Let's say you are a computer programmer specializing in building WordPress sites. You can join wordpress.com, wordpress.org and numerous other communities by simply registering on those sites. Then read questions asked each day and answer some of them.
Each time you offer a valid answer, you are not only helping the person who asked the question but numerous others who will see your response later. You will become known in the community.
At times you will see a question regarding a topic you have covered on your site. Link to the topic and expose your site to the community. Sometimes you will find that you have repeatedly answered the same question. That may be a signal to write a great article covering the topic.
Forums, blogs, etc. all offer ways for users such as yourself to generate content.

OK that's clear, that is kind of what I was wondering. So how exactly do you contact a site that covers your niche- do you use phone or email? What exactly do you say? What works?

You will find your answers by looking at the below article:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-web-developers-seo-cheat-sheet
If you read that article without reading this far you are probably asking "Why did he offer that link? It has nothing to do with writing articles and sharing them on directories?"
That was the first article I read from Danny Dover. It was a well-written, helpful article. I believe Danny may have worked for SEOmoz at the time, but this site has an open community. If you take the time to write a similar, high quality article then you can have that article published in this site's blog. It could be your twitter link at the bottom, or perhaps a helpful link to your profile or site at the bottom of the article.
Whether your niche is vitamin sales, coffee or cars there are plenty of sites which discuss your topic. Write a great article and let the world know about it. Keep most of your content on your site but once in a while offer your article to a site that covers your niche. You can then become a bigger part of their community, a known contributor, and gain recognition for yourself and your site that way.
The entire concept of creating 500 word mediocre articles for the primary purpose of SEO, then sharing these average quality articles with various article directories is something that is primarily being done for the purpose of manipulating search results. Even if it works today, you are always going to be one panda update from making a "I don't understand why my rankings dropped" post.
That is where I would offer a very different opinion.

I have managed to land a few expert pieces on external sites for my company and would like to document that on our blog in the form of mini-blurbs which lead through to the article... but if I link back to it, is that bad practice?
Of course link sharing can be punishable if it is done to share juice, and I understand that on the surface it could look like link sharing, but in reality it would just be nice to document the different successes we've had. Thoughts?

Should my backlinks point to my home page or to internal article pages?
Hi, I run a fitness blog and I get the majority of my backlinks through guest posts that I write on high quality sites. Sometimes they allow me to put a backlink within the article, and I'll link it to a relevant article of mine. However, in the "author bio" section my backlink anchor text is usually just my brand name. I was wondering if this backlink should point towards my home page or is it more beneficial to point it towards an important article of mine? Thanks

Why articles submitted to squidoo not indexed by google
Hi, I have written a few articles and uploaded to squidoo/hubpage last month and they have been accepted and I can see the links in the articles. But they dont appear in the latest link report from Google Webmaster Tools. Is it because it's delay or Google simply wont treat them as valid links? Thanks

Two Links in one Article to One Domain
Will multiple links in a single article to one target domain (but seperate pages) count, or just the first link of that article? Thanks, Chris

Interlinking articles and posts
I have many articles and blog posts on my site. How should I interlink them for the MOST benefit to my root domain. For example, should I consider pointing pages with higher SEOMoz page rank or trust to those with lower rank? Or does that not matter?

What would you do with unqiue articles?
Hi, If you had 10 articles which are unqiue and around 400 - 600 words what would you do with them? I personally would more then likely put on squidoo, wordpress, blogger, weebly, hub pages etc and orientate the setup of these around my target keyword so the title tags, urls, h1's and content are around the term and then place anchor text links (2 of them) in the content of each one. I would then social bookmark each on the top 10 sites. Because it takes so long for me to write the content I sometimes think would it be best to put on the onsite blog. What would others do with this content, is there something else I could do with it that would have a great impact on rankings?

Matt Cutts on Article Marketing
I've been waiting for Matt Cutts to talk about this for a long time... finally a YouTube video! "Should you syndicate your articles out to sites such as ezinearticles.com as a way to build links?" He discussed this from an SEO perspective and does not recommend it. I thought that he was way too polite about it... but if you are a guy like him it isn't good to talk trash about the specifics. One topic that he didn't address was how article marketing can impact your competitive position. It feeds existing competitors and creates new competitors. You write twenty articles and they are each published by twenty sites, now there are 400 pages with your keywords out there competing against you. Not smart, IMO. Here's the link to the video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5xP-pTmlpY&NR=1

I don't know if i should post my articles to other forums or sharing sites to create back links?
All the articles on my blog are written on my own. I write about 5 ones per month. I don't know if i should post my articles to other forums or sharing sites to create back links? I have heard that it may cause adverse effect because my blog will be crawled more slowly than those forums, so Google will consider the articles on my blog (as) copies. Is that right?
