Mobile site - allow robot traffic
-
Hi,
If a user comes to our site from a mobile device, we redirect to our mobile site. That is www.mysite/mypage redirects to m.mysite/mypage. Right now we are blocking robots from crawling our m. site. Previously there were concerns the m. site could rank for normal browser searches. To make sure this isn't a problem we are planning on rel canonical our m. site pages and reference the www pages (mobile is just a different version of our www site).
From my understanding having a mobile version of a page is a ranking factor for mobile searches so allowing robots is a good thing. Before doing so, I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions/feedback (looking for potential pitfalls, issues etc)

Hi Jamie -- I noticed the mobile version of our website is appearing in the Bing search results (from a desktop) --- can you employ the same technique as Google and specify to the Bing/Yahoo! mobile bot to only crawl the mobile version of your site and restrict the normal bot from crawling mobile version? Thanks for additional guidance. I assume this would clear up this issue of our mobile site appearing in normal non-mobile search results.

My preference is not to redirect to m.domain.com as there are potential issues with m.domain.com listings appearing in natural search. I would use the user agent detection, I think this gives the best user experience as well, rather than re-directing, what type of re-direct are you using anyway?
I would for best practice, still specify google mobile bot to crawl the mobile version of your website only ans restrict normal g bot form the mobile version.
Cheers,
Jamie.

Rather than just blocking robots from crawling your mobile site, you should configure your robots.txt file to allow the mobile googlebot to crawl that subdomain specifically and disallow it on your regular domain. This way users searching on mobile devices will be shown your mobile site. In your current set up you risk sending them to your main site from the SERPs.
If you need help getting that set up there is a tool in Google webmasters called "Generate robots.txt" located in the crawler settings under Site Configuration.

We don't block robots from our mobile site. Our site is designed to work well with iPad. We have found that our KWs perform slightly better when searched from a mobile device. It's a once little bonus for us. Duplicate content hasn't been a problem, I think the engines are smart enough to figure it out, even without a mobile sitemap.

For Google's opinion, you'll want to watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY9h3G8Lv4k, and read http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/11/help-google-index-your-mobile-site.html.

Main Site and eCommerce Site URLs for SEO
My client currently has a main website on a url and an eCommerce site on a subdomain. The eCommerce site is currently not mobile friendly, has images that are too small and are problematic - and I believe it negates some of the SEO work we do for them. I had to turn off Google Shopping ads because the quality score was so low. That being said, they are rebuilding a shopping cart on a new platform that will be mobile friendly BUT the images are going to be tiny until they slowly replace images over several months. Would you keep the shopping cart on a subdomain, or make it part of the main website URL? Can it negatively impact the progress we have made on the main site SEO.

Site verification in WMT
Hello all, I have a site and I want to set a preferred domain but when I do it says I need to verify my site but it gives me no ideas how to do that. I know that normally you have to do it when you set the account up but I had an analytics account for this domain first then just logged on with those details and I was in with no verification process. Cheers

Index inactive mobile site?
Hi, I have a question wrt Mobile version of a site. Previously, we had a mobile site which is no longer active and there are possibilities of resurrecting it in future, so we have a 302 redirect which points to the homepage (desktop version). Currently, the mobile site is indexed by the search engines. To avoid the duplicate content issue, is it recommended to use robots.txt and block the spiders from mobile content or apply 301 redirect until the mobile site is up and running, OR continue with the 302 redirect. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks,

301 an old site to a newer site...
Hi First, to be upfront - these are not my websites, I'm asking because they are trying to compete in my niche. Here's the details, then the questions... There is a website that is a few months old with about 200 indexed pages and about 20 links, call this newsite.com There is a website that is a few years old with over 10,000 indexed pages and over 20,000 links, call this oldsite.com newsite.com acquired oldsite.com and set a 301 redirect so every page of oldsite.com is re-directed to the front page of newsite.com newsite.com & oldsite.com are on the same topic, the 301 occurred in the past week. Now, oldsite.com is out of the SERPs and newsite.com is pretty much ranking in the same spot (top 10) for the main term. Here are my questions; 1. The 10,000 pages on oldsite.com had plenty of internal links - they no longer exists, so I imagine when the dust settles - it will be like oldsite.com is a one page site that re-diretcts to newsite.com ... How long will a ranking boost last for? 2. With the re-direct setup to completely forget about the structure and content of oldsite.com, it's clear to me that it was setup to pass the 'Link Juice' from oldsite.com to newsite.com ... Do the major SE's see this as a form of SPAM (manipulating the rankings), or do they see it as a good way to combine two or more websites? 3. Does this work? Is everybody doing it? Should I be doing it? ... or are there better ways for me to combat this type of competition (eg we could make a lot of great content for the money spent buying oldsite.com - but we certainly wouldn't get such an immediate increase to traffic)?
