A global brand with localised microsites - distinct TLDs or directories by territory?
-
Hello,
Looking to create an export site for a gobal brand and considering the benefits of distinct domains/TLDs vs. directories by territory.
I.e.
brand.fr vs. brand.com/fr for our French content
brand.ca/fr vs brand.com/ca/fr for our French Canadian contentApple segregate their content by directory but we're not quite Apple to be fair...
Directory route would be technically cleaner but I don't wish to discount the SEO benefit of unique TLDs.
Any thoughts / considerations / similar experiences?
Thanks,
Jan

Hi Urban Fox
That's a good answer from Alan.
There is a blog post at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/geolocation-international-seo-faq which is well worth a read. It's 2 1/2 years old however still very relevant.
Also, a Matt Cutts video worth a view can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ets7nHOV1Yo
Regards
Simon

Hi urban fox, i think we talked about a simular topic a while ago. I have got a bit more info lately from Matt Cutts.
If you have domains hosted in different countries, lets say .au and .uk with duplicate content, that is not a problem, but the sub directories with duplicate content is.
He did mentiion that you should have your dollar and pound sybols as well as date formats and teh like correct for each tld.

Optimizing for Branded and Unbranded terms - ecommerce
Hi, To date, we have gone with optimizing our website for branded search terms - we have done this by including the manufacturer + product name in the links to the product, product urls, page titles, h1's etc... Now, we are looking at optimising also for non branded terms - but all of our products are already optimized as above and I'm a bit lost as to how we would proceed with this process - my thoughts are: Create the generic categories, e.g, "Decorative Mirrors" But then, if they link through to the existing mirrors which are optimised for branded search, how do I go about it? Do I create a duplicate of the product and remove all the branded terms in the page title, h1, url and create new content for it? E.g., the same product but available twice... Doesnt seem logical from a user perspective but I cant think of another way to do this?? Thank you

On-Site Directory - Delete or Keep?
We have 2 ecommerce sites. Both have been hit by Penguin (no warnings in WMT) and we're in the process of cleaning up backlinks. We have link directories on both sites. They've got links that are relevant to the sites but also links that aren't relevant. And they're big directories - we're talking thousands of links to other sites. What's the best approach here? Do we leave it alone, delete the whole thing, or manually review and keep highly relevant links but get rid of the rest?

Hi From an SEO point of view what are the current recommendations for linking and using the same template for the same brand on a .com and .co.uk website, so both named the same, using the same template and products but one for Europe and one for the states and Australia.

Worthwhile to have global footer links?
About Us, FAQ, Site Map, Terms & Privacy - I know rarely viewed by users (at least on my website), so why keep in global footer across all pages, since one could argue it will dilute some link juice to more important pages? Why not just keep on homepage only? What is argument for having links to these pages across all pages on a site? Is there any SEO value?

Best Practice for Inter-Linking to CCTLD brand domains
Team, I am wondering what people recommend as best SEO practice to inter-link to language specific brand domains e.g. : amazon.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | tomypro
amazon.de
amazon.fr
amazon.it Currently I have 18 CCTLDs for one brand in different languages (no DC). I am linking from each content page to each other language domain, providing a link to the equivalent content in a separate language on a different CCTLD doamin. However, with Google's discouragement of site-wide links I am reviewing this practice. I am tending towards making the language redirects on each page javascript driven and to start linking only from my home page to the other pages with optimized link titles. Anyone having any thoughts/opinions on this topic they are open to sharing? /Thomas0 -

Global Redirection Rules
SEO Moz Community: After twice changing directory software, I have a ton of 404 errors in Webmaster Tools (over 3,000). I've decided to do 301 redirects but can't manually enter in each 404 URL. How can you redirect pages from the same folder on a mass scale? For example, mysite.com/autos has hundreds of pages associated with it (/autos/ford, toyota etc.) How can you do a 301 that redirects all those pages without manually entering in each URL? Site is built on Wordpress
