Why is Google sending traffic to our homepage, not our optimized pages?
-
Hello Forum,
My team and I just completely redid a yoga eCommerce site, including its SEO. The old version of the site didn't feature page-specific optimization and, as a result, Google's search results for our keywords almost always directed visitors to the homepage.
For example, a Google search for the term "yoga bolster" sent users to the homepage, not the product category page for yoga bolsters.
After redoing the site and optimizing specific pages (i.e. the yoga bolster page is now optimized for the keyword "yoga bolster"), the Google search results are still taking users to the homepage, not the optimized page. (i.e. if you search for yoga bolster, find our search result, and click the search result link, you're taken to the homepage, not the bolster page)
It's only been about 36 hours since we've launched the new website and submitted it to Google's webmaster tools.
Does anyone know why Google is still sending people to our homepage and not the keyword-optimized pages we created? Is this a timing issue?
-
Within 36 hours it is definitely a timing issue at this point, but cannot say for sure that in the long term it will sort itself out.
There are many other things to take into consideration other than just META and onpage optimized content.
You would also want to do a high quality informational link building campaign that uses (gracefully) the anchor text "yoga bolster" to this newly optimized page. There is also internal linking you can do that would help re-inforce this directive to Google.

Hi Pano
Timing is one issue, it will take longer. First the pages need to be indexed which can take much longer than 36 hours for some websites, then the pages need to be ranked for their targeted keywords. You say it's a new website, in which case this would be the case. If the URLs are the same as before, then just a reindexing delay and the ranking factors.
Though the Main Reason will be that your internal product/landing pages most probably do not have any (or any good quality) inbound links to them, chances they are all going to your homepage. I'd suggest looking at this as links are a major ranking factor.
So take a look at the on-page SEO again to ensure that it's as strong as can be, then analyse your inbound link situation and if necessary, get some high quality relevant links from reputable websites to link into your internal pages (though don't pay for the links, free natural links are the way to go).
Also, make sure that visitors and search spiders can easily navigate to your internal pages that you are trying to get ranked, have a check for any crawl errors and make sure that your robots.txt file is not disallowing any such pages from being indexed.
Regards, Simon

Does having too many wordpress portfolio pages with little content hurt a site's SEO?
I have a site that is for a service company, not image based like a photographer or artist. We utilize the Portfolio feature to create a gallery of floor coating finishes (images of all the flooring finish options available) but this solution has created /portfolio/file-name pages for each image. These pages have no other content besides the image. I've run SEMrush audits on this site which shows a high percentage of pages with low text/code ratio and duplicate content (a lot of the finishes have very similar names). This site has been extremely slow to improve any visibility online (more than 9 months) and I'm wondering if this is a factor by possibly having a negative effect on our site. We initially chose the portfolio option because it was the best-looking solution for our users but we can certainly change it to another format if that is better. Thanks!

May open the site's homepage...?
In mobile search results, many of my inner pages show the title tag, but the link is removed. And instead of showing the meta description, there is the following: May open the site's homepage
Web Design | | Dino64
Try anyway | Learn more Both "Try Anyway" and "Learn more" are links. Try anyway used to link to the homepage, but after we removed a redirect plugin and got rid of all the html mobile pages (now we're just using the Wordpress responsive layout), the link is now going to the correct page. So, it in fact, does NOT "open the site's homepage" any longer. But, we're still seeing this on mobile searches for our inner pages. It's been almost 3 weeks now. Any ideas on how to get this back to normal?0 -
Google Malware Message
*Update 9/19/2013 So I finally have more details the site is a joomla site and is hosted on godaddy. The weird thing is the malware message only appears when browsing the site in chrome it comes up fine in internet explorer any specific reason why that would be? Also we noticed that on the joomla template there were about 6 scripts after the tag that were adult site related and have nothing to do with our site, any ideas? I appreciate all/any suggestions and or advice. Thank You. I had a client recently pay about $300 for a site design that she hosted on go daddy. This is the site www.shirianfabric.com can anyone tell me why this would happen its only been live for about three months and out of no where we get this message? My client is thinking maybe the designer inserted some kind of malicious code?as he is now charging a couple hundred to fix the issue. Is there any way to look further into this? Im not sure a webmasters account was ever set up for this site so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

One Page Guide vs. Multiple Individual Pages
Howdy, Mozzers! I am having a battle with my inner-self regarding how to structure a resources section for our website. We're building out several pieces of content that are meant to be educational for our clients and I'm having trouble deciding how to layout the content structure. We could either layout all eight short sections on a single page, or create individual pages for each section. The goal is obviously to attract new potential clients by targeting these terms that they may be searching for in an information gathering stage. Here's my dilemma...

With the single page guide, it would be nice because it will have a lot of content (and of course, keywords) to be picked up by the SERPS but I worry that it is going to be a bit crammed (because of eight sections) for the user. The individual pages would be much better organized and you can target more specific keywords, but I worry that it may get flagged for light content as some pages may have as little as a 150 word description. I have always been mindful of writing copy for searchers over spiders, but now I'm at a more technical crossroads as far as potentially getting dinged for not having robust content on each page. Here's where you come in...
What do you think is the better of the two options? I like the idea of having the multiple pages because of the ability to hone-in on a keyword and the clean, organized feel, but I worry about the lack of content (and possibly losing out on long-tail opportunities). I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please and thank you. Ready annnnnnnnnnnnd GO!0 -
Does Google follow links inside a <noscript>tag?</noscript>
I'm looking at making an embedable calculator and asking users to embed it to their website. I had the idea of using javascript to include the calculator which would also conatain a text link back to my site in order to gain some back links. If it's possible Google won't see the link (as they may not execute the javascript), is it safe to place the link in the <noscript>tag? If so, Will it be indexed and will Page Rank be passed?</span></p> <p>Thanks in advance for your answers. </p> <p>Anthony</p> <p><span style="color: #5e5e5e;"><br /></span></p></noscript>

Does disabling the "View Source" functionality prevent Google from crawling a website?
I know Google uses a lot of variables when crawling a website. I wasn't sure if disabling the "View Source" option hindered anything.

Auto-Generated META tag on 404 Page
I'm currently creating a 404 error page for my site and I noticed that a similar site uses some sort of code to automatically generate a meta title. Is this useful? For instance type in electrolux.com/john This page does not exist but in the title you'll see John | Electrolux How can i do this on my site?
