Image and Content Management
-
My boss has decided that on our new website we are building, that he wants all content and images managed by not allowing copying content and/or saving images.
Some of the information and images is proprietary, yet most is available for public viewing, but never the less, he wants it prohibited from copy and/or saving. We would still want to keep the content indexable and use appropriate alt tags etc...
I wanted to find out if there is any SEO reason and facts to why this would not be a good idea?Would implementing code to prohibit (or at least make it difficult) to save images and copy content, penalize us?
-
If your boss really feels there is a site which offers such protection, please share the URL. There are sites which may disable right-clicking but that only removes a single method of copying content.
-
I totally concur. You cant stop anyone from jacking your content, or graphics.
-
That was what I was thinking.
I knew it would be nearly impossible, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't out of the loop on something. I am pretty sure he seen a website that had text select disabled or something of that nature, but there is always works arounds. Thanks

It is not possible to prevent content theft. Anyone who can read your content can copy it. The same applies to images. It is a mistake to try. At best, you will prevent a relatively small percentage of people with little understanding from being able to copy your content, and that is not the group people normally wish to impede.
Let's say you did create a new technology which actually prevented most forms of copying content. If a person sees your webpage they can take an image of the page at the push of a single button, then paste that image into photo shop. From there they can cut out your images and save them. They could also use a OCR to capture all the text. This can be done in 60 seconds.
There is a large interest in achieving the goal you seek and I am not aware of any organization that has come close on any level to achieving it. If somehow it was achieved, the page would not be readable by search engines. Search engines have to be able to read every character of text through their web crawlers. In effect, search engines scrape your content. If you find a technology to prevent copying text, it would prevent search engines from crawling as well.
The best your boss can do is copyright the website and/or images. It is highly likely your bosses fears will be realized at some point and his content or images will be stolen if it is of a high quality nature. A copyright will provide him with the maximum amount of legal protection. You can also employ the services of companies which will embed a tracking code of sorts into images. These companies then crawl the web each month looking for your protected content on other sites.

Duplicate Content
Let's say a blog is publishing original content. Now let's say a second blog steals that original content via bot and publishes it as it's own. Now further assume the original blog doesn't notice this for several years. How much damage could this do to blog A for Google results? Any opinions?

Noindexing Thin News Content for Panda
We've been suffering under a Panda penalty since Oct 2014. We've completely revamped the site but with this new "slow roll out" nonsense it's incredibly hard to know at what point you have to accept that you haven't done enough yet. We have thousands of news stories going back to 2001, some of which are probably thin and some of which are probably close to other news stories on the internet being articles based on press releases. I'm considering noindexing everything older than a year just in case, however, that seems a bit of overkill. The question is, if I mine the logfiles and only deindex stuff that Google sends no further traffic to after a year could this be seen as trying to game the algo or similar? Also, if the articles are noindexed but still exist, is that enough to escape a Panda penalty or does the page need to be physically gone?

Merge content pages together to get one deep high quality content page - good or not !?
Hi, I manage the SEO of a brand poker website that provide ongoing very good content around specific poker tournaments, but all this content is split into dozens of pages in different sections of the website (blog section, news sections, tournament section, promotion section). It seems like today having one deep piece of content in one page has better chance to get mention / social signals / links and therefore get a higher authority / ranking / traffic than if this content was split into dozens of pages. But the poker website I work for and also many other website do generate naturally good content targeting long tail keywords around a specific topic into different section of the website on an ongoing basis. Do you we need once a while to merge those content pages into one page ? If yes, what technical implementation would you advice ? (copy and readjust/restructure all content into one page + 301 the URL into one). Thanks Jeremy

Number of images on Google?
Hello here, In the past I was able to find out pretty easily how many images from my website are indexed by Google and inside the Google image search index. But as today looks like Google is not giving you any numbers, it just lists the indexed images. I use the advanced image search, by defining my domain name for the "site or domain" field: http://www.google.com/advanced_image_search and then Google returns all the images coming from my website. Is there any way to know the actual number of images indexed? Any ideas are very welcome! Thank you in advance.

Magento Duplicate Content Recovery
Hi, we switched platforms to Magento last year. Since then our SERPS rankings have declined considerably (no sudden drop on any Panda/Penguin date lines). After investigating, it appeared we neglected to No index, follow all our filter pages and our total indexed pages rose sevenfold in a matter of weeks. We have since fixed the no index issue and the pages indexed are now below what we had pre switch to Magento. We've seen some positive results in the last week. Any ideas when/if our rankings will return? Thanks!
