Social Media valuable for organic rankings?
-
Is there a link between ranking higher in organic search rankings and having a good social media presence.
I think there is, the more likes and followers you have the better.
The real question is how to you utilise it, do you regulary share content, put keywords in the share info for the ones you want to rank, how best can you utilise social media to help in organic search?
I suspect social noise is used towards some kind of overall quality score in the search engines.

Increasing page shares with targeted keywords (1-2) have helped me get rankings. Along with reviews (social) and video.

Agreed with comments on community-building and the broader value, but it does look like social mentions are having indexing and probably ranking impact. The Twitter connection is a little unclear, now that Google has cut the contract with Twitter for their direct data, but it does seem to be coming into play. Danny had a great interview on it with search engineers earlier this year:

It looks like Google+ is definitely coming into play, too, especially with personalized results. If you're logged in and have a Google+ account, chances are it's already impacting your rankings. This will probably only increase during 2012.

Social media does have a direct impact on SEO - links in Twitter, for example, are fed to Google with Twitter's nofollow attribute removed. But the impact of a single link in Twitter is far less significant than a link from a website where is will be seen over and over. The value of a Twitter link increases, though, with the influence of the Tweeter. So, the object is, as others have said, to create a community or, circle of influence.

I would have to agree with Dimitar and say social media should be used as a way to engage your audience and create new networks. We try to use our social media to grow interest in our business and I also have found out increasing facebook fans have not helped in ranking so far.

It is about gathering a community and making it spread the word and not so much about seo stuff like keywords and so on. Even if ebay did not rank well on google people will still use it as much and talk about it as much.
But search engines do count likes +1s and so on so they are metrics now and yes the more the better.

Social Noise - what counts?
Getting social signals is important it seems now. Is having a facebook comments box on your website where people can comment worth any social noise? if it posts to their facebook page its only seen by their friends, not google. So basically wondering do you get social signals of people commenting on your page in a facebook comments feature?

Is duplicate content in social media ok?
We use Twitter, Facebook, a blog, and Google +. Currently we create unique content for each. These platforms have the ability to "cross-post" (Where what you put on your facebook or blog gets tweeted, for example). Is it important to keep this content unique? Or can we duplicate across these platforms?

Is there such a concept as 'Social Juice'?
Hi, Sorry if this question appears a bit confused, but here goes ... My understanding is that the Google ranking algolrithm has three aspects: Content Links Social Activity (Tweets, FB shares etc) I recognise that I can increase my PR by posting comments on highly ranked pages that allow 'follow' links. I get that! After investigating Google+ I see I can tie together: The content I contribute to (e.g. my website, my blog) My social networking activity (My Twitter activity, my FB fanpage, Google+ activity) Suddenly Google has a view not just of my content, but also my social influence, almost like a Klout score. It also means they have the potential to build a matrix of other content producers & social media commentators. Therefore, can I gain what I'm calling 'Social Juice' (which would influence the ranking of my content) by: Getting highly ranked social media commenters to interact/comment on any of my content/social engagement By commenting on highly ranked content producers regardless of whether that comment contains a link back to my content. So for point 2, perhaps a prominent expert in my field has a blog that allows me to leave a comment via a Twitter login, but I can't leave a link back to my website (no link juice), however because Google+ knows the comment is attributed to me (as my accounts are linked in Google+) I get 'social juice'. The idea being if I'm permitted to interact with an expert in my field, then I too must have some credibility. (Perhaps that not quite accurate, because I could engaged in an argument with said expert, so perhaps it is more like Klout's idea of influencing people) If there is logic in point 2, then what might be the best way to 'login' to leave comments on something like a Disqus comment based system so that Google might gain access to this 'social jiuce'. I guess the best way would be to leave a comment via a Google+ account, but that doesn't seem to be option in lot of cases. Big post, I hope its relevant and makes sense.

If I move my blog from subdomain to root, will my blog lose all of its authority? Social signals?
Moving my blog from blog.site.co.uk to site.co.uk/blog and just wondered if all the social data for each post will be lost including the blog authority which has been built up over time? Is 301 redirects enough to keep any of it?
