Confused on www vs non-www
-
Hey Everyone...
Really new to the SEO world and have learned tons each day. When I joined SEOmoz I went to my host and set up the 301 direct to have frogfanreport.com go to www.frogfanreport.com.
After a couple of days I noticed that Rogerbot only crawled 1 page on www.frogfanreport.com. Looked into the community posts to try to find an answer. So, I went in and took the 301 direct off and setup a new campaign just for frogfanreport.com. It has now crawled over 300 pages.
Not sure what I need to do or if I just did not set it up the 301 direct correctly. Looking at the link stats the root domain stats are obviously the same. The subdomain stats is where there is a big difference:
www: ext f links 1, total ext links 5, total links 5, f root domain 1, total linking root domain 4
non-www: ext f links 76, total ext links 109, total links 7.962, f root domain 11, total link root domain 19
I am guessing that I should go back in and put the 301 direct from www to non-www? Is this going to affect RogerBot going in? Or did I just not set it up correctly?

I'm third generation TCU and kind of live and die by the Frogs.

Here is a good GWMT link for rel=canon. Frankly, with the 301 and the preferred domain in WMT you should be ok, but this is a good short on rel=canon.
Go Frogs! (Did not go to TCU, but just like the Frogs - lot of friends and now friends kids go there)

Hi Robert....
Thank you so much for responding, you have some good stuff there. I went to google and selected my preferred domain. I taught myself how to write the 301 redirect and put that in an .htaccess file and then taught myself how to upload it. Wasn't too difficult.
I do have one more question in regards to your canonicalize tip. Where do I place that link, ? Do I place that in the .htaccess file as well?
Thanks a million and have a great New Year

Zach (Go Frogs!!!)
The first thing is go into Google web master tools and select a preferred domain. Assumption is you will use frogfanreport.com. Under site configuration and settings you will see select preferred domain.
One of the first things I learned through SEOmoz was that for proper redirect you need to put the 301 redirect from your www.frogfanreport.com to your frogfanreport.com in your .htacess file.
If you also canonicalize to the preferred you will be rocking.

Discrepancy between backlinks (opensiteexplorer vs. search console)
Hey there, when I check in search console for "Links to your site" and "your most linked content" I see incoming links pointing to the wrong (country and language) subdirectory? When I check those same backlinks with opensiteexplorer they seem to point (after redirects) to the correct subdirectory. Anyone out there with similar experiences or thoughts on this? I would be happy to give access to search console if you wanted to have a look at this. Page Rank vs Page and Domain Authority - who wins?
A client has found another SEO agency promising various things to do with link building. Most of these promises are based upon links from sites with allegedly high page ranks. So my questions: Page rank seems to be fading out am I safe to stay with PA and DA metrics instead? I don't agree with link building tactics and feel that it should more a networking activity to provide USEFUL links to users... am I being too white hat and missing opporunities? The other company have promised long list of links including 100 SEO friendly web directory listings, 200 PR 8 back links from Pinterest (which i thought was no follow) & 10 long lasting and high quality mini web sites (with three pages/posts, video and pictures). Am I right that this all sounds a little spammy or is this really what I should be doing for me clients?

What's my best strategy for Duplicate Content if only www pages are indexed?
The MOZ crawl report for my site shows duplicate content with both www and non-www pages on the site. (Only the www are indexed by Google, however.) Do I still need to use a 301 redirect - even if the non-www are not indexed? Is rel=canonical less preferable, as usual? Facts: the site is built using asp.net the homepage has multiple versions which use 'meta refresh' tags to point to 'default.asp'. most links already point to www Current Strategy: set the preferred domain to 'www' in Google's Webmaster Tools. set the Wordpress blog (which sits in a /blog subdirectory) with rel="canonical" to point to the www version. Ask programmer to add 301 redirects from the non-www pages to the www pages. Ask programmer to use 301 redirects as opposed to meta refresh tags & point all homepage versions to www.site.org. Does this strategy make the most sense? (Especially considering the non-indexed but existent non-www pages.) Thanks!!

Confused on setting up my domain in a campaign
I have a website that is www.example.com. When I first setup my campaign in SEOMoz, I missed the instructions that stated I need to set up my domain as it appeared in the browser. Thus, I set it up as example.com. When I realized my mistake, I setup a second campaign as www.example.com and am running them side by side to see the differences. My question has to do with the best setup. I have a blog that is a subdomain as blog.example.com. It appears that the www.example.com campaign is not crawling the blog pages but example.com is. Are there any downsides in setting up this campaign as example.com? I have a number of other sites with the same issue so would like to get this resolved before I setup the additional sites. Thanks for any assistance or insights into ways I may be "shooting myself in the foot" with the wrong domain structure in my campaign settings.

Competitive Link Comparison vs. Open Site Explorer
I get different external followed links showing in the Competitive Link Comparison vs. Open Site Explorer. The total number of links is different as well. I thought this was the same info - just one tracks ongoing and one is just a "one-off" tool. Is this not the case? Do the count links differently? Thanks! Kevin

Title missing or empty on non-html downloadable files?
My site, www.cnccookbook.com, has lots of links for downloading files. These files are not html and they don't have .htm or .html extensions. So why does SEOMoz flag them for missing titles? Is there some other way these files should be handled for better SEO?

Best directory submittal program? Or at least a comprehensive list of non-spammy directories somewhere?
There's a ton of directories. Has anyone had success with a program that will take your info for a site and submit it to all of them at once? Bonus points if you can vary the anchor text and description. Paid or free. And whether there is anything like that, which actually works, I am wondering if there is some relatively authoritative, relatively comprehensive list of non-spammy directories. Any other directory advice would be awesome! Thanks!
