How to remove Duplicate content due to url parameters from SEOMoz Crawl Diagnostics
-
Hello all
I'm currently getting back over 8000 crawl errors for duplicate content pages . Its a joomla site with virtuemart and 95% of the errors are for parameters in the url that the customer can use to filter products.
Google is handling them fine under webmaster tools parameters but its pretty hard to find the other duplicate content issues in SEOMoz with all of these in the way.
All of the problem parameters start with
?product_type_
Should i try and use the robot.txt to stop them from being crawled and if so what would be the best way to include them in the robot.txt
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Tom
It took a while but I got there in the end. I was using joomla 1.5 and I downloaded a component called "tag meta" which allows you to insert tags including the canonical tag on specific urls or more importantly urls which begin in a certain way. Now how you use it depends on how your sef urls are set up or what sef component you are using but you can put a canonical tag on every url in a section that has view-all-products in it.
So in one of my examples I put a canonical tag pointing to /maternity-tops.html (my main category page for that section) on every url that began with /maternity-tops/view-all-products
I hope this if of help to you. It takes a bit of playing around with but it worked for me. The component also has fairly good documentation.
Regards
Damien

Damien,
Are you able to explain how you were able to do this within virtuemart?
Thanks

So leave the 5 pages of dresses as they are because they are all original but have the canonical tag on all of the filter parameters pointing to Page 1 of dresses.
Thank you for your help Alan

It should be on all versions of the page, all pointing to the one version.
Search engines will then see all as one page

Hi Alan
Thanks for getting back to me so fast. I'm slightly confused on this so an example might help One of the pages is http://www.funkybumpmaternity.com/Maternity-Dresses.html.
There are 5 pages of dresses with options on the left allowing you to narrow that down by color, brand, occasion and style. Every time you select an option on combination of options on the left for example red it will generate a page with only red dresses and a url of http://www.funkybumpmaternity.com/Maternity-Dresses/View-all-products.html?product_type_1_Colour[0]=Red&product_type_1_Colour_comp=find_in_set_any&product_type_id=1
The options available are huge which I believe is why i'm getting so many duplicate content content issues on SEOMoz pro. Google is handling the parameters fine.
How should I implement the canonical tag? Should I have a tag on all filter pages referencing page 1 of the dresses? Should pages 2-5 have the tag on them? If so would this mean that the dresses on these pages would not be indexed?

This sounds more like a case for a canonical tag,
dont exculed with robots.txt this is akin to cutting off your arm, because you have a spliter in your finger.
When you exclude use robots, link juce passing though links to these pages is lost.

Duplicate Content in WordPress Taxonomies & Noindex, Follow
Hello Moz Community, We are seeing duplicate content issues in our Moz report for our WordPress site’s Tag pages. After a bit of research, it appears one of the best solutions is to set Tag pages to “no index, follow” within Yoast. That makes sense, but we have a few questions: In doing this, how are we affecting our opportunity to show up in search results? Are there any other repercussions to making this change? What would it take to make the content on these pages be seen as unique?

Crawl Diagnostics - unexpected results
I received my first Crawl Diagnostics report last night on my dynamic ecommerce site. It showed errors on generated URLs which simply are not produced anywhere when running on my live site. Only when running on my local development server. It appears that the Crawler doesn't think that it's running on the live site. For example http://www.nordichouse.co.uk/candlestick-centrepiece-p-1140.html will go to a Product Not Found page, and therefore Duplicate Content errors are produced. Running http://www.nhlocal.co.uk/candlestick-centrepiece-p-1140.html produces the correct product page and not a Product Not Found page Any thoughts?

Domain.com and domain.com/index.html duplicate content in reports even with rewrite on
I have a site that was recently hit by the Google penguin update and dropped a page back. When running the site through seomoz tools, I keep getting duplicate content in the reports for domain.com and domain.com/index.html, even though I have a 301 rewrite condition. When I test the site, domain.com/index.html redirects to domain.com for all directories and root. I don't understand how my index page can still get flagged as duplicate content. I also have a redirect from domain.com to www.domain.com. Is there anything else I need to do or add to my htaccess file? Appreciate any clarification on this.

Duplicate Content being caused by home page?
Hello everyone, I am new to SEOmoz and SEO in general and I have a quick questions. When running a SEO Web Crawler report on my URL, I noticed in the report that my home page (also known as my index page) was listed twice. Here is what the report was showing: www.example.com/ www.example.com/index.php So are these 2 different urls? If so, is this considered duplicate content and should I block crawler access to the index.php? Thanks in advance for the help!

Why are these pages considered duplicate page content?
A recent crawl diagnostic for a client's website had several new duplicate page content errors. The problem is, I'm not sure where the error comes from since the content in the webpage is different from one another. Here's the pages that SEOMOZ reported to have duplicate page content errors: http://www.imaginet.com.ph/wireless-internet-service-providers-term http://www.imaginet.com.ph/antivirus-term http://www.imaginet.com.ph/berkeley-internet-name-domain http://www.imaginet.com.ph/customer-premises-equipment-term The only thing similar that I see is the headline which says "Glossary Terms Used in this Site" - I hope that the one sentence is the reason for the error. Any input is appreciated as I want to find out the best solution for my client's website errors. Thanks!

On the Crawl Diagnostics Summary, its reporting over 100 "Title Missing or Empty" issues, but they all check out fine?
Wondering if there Is a bug with the crawler or known timeout issues? Site speed is fast, but we do run a couple of large cron jobs out of hours, which may be the cause of any timeouts, but shouldn't the crawler report that, rather saying no title tags on 100 pages, when there are? SEOmoz newbie, so still finding my feet 🙂
