Competitor purchased thousands of hidden links to our website... will it hurt rankings?
-
A competitor has allegedly purchased a site wide HIDDEN link on a property that links to our website. Would this link hurt our rankings?
Requests to the site to remove those links didn't go well -- they state they can legally link to any site they like and are not going to remove those links.
Technically speaking, this is what the link looks like in their html:
The thousands of hidden links from this website will now vastly outnumber our existing backlinks.

Google contradicts itself on their guidelines. And if you read between the lines, then it seems that YES, a competitor can screw with you!.....
Can competitors harm ranking?
There's almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed from our index. If you're concerned about another site linking to yours, we suggest contacting the webmaster of the site in question. Google aggregates and organizes information published on the web; we don't control the content of these pages.

I like this answer! LOL 'go to war'.. when and if it happens you site is affected. I would also 'log' the date you caught these, so you can go back historically if traffic drops happen and associate this with the inbound link buy someone obviously did.

Hey Nichank,
This is a tough one to answer, as to whether Google would look negatively on this. My bet is yes. Because the lnik is using
, and hiding content links using anchor text, my bet with recent algorithm changes, panda and freshness is that it will look upon these.
The only good thing that may save you here is they pointed 'thousands' of these links - which in itself makes the site linking to you (or sites) look like link farms - which Google would also detect and determine to be valueless' to the user - thus - nullifying thier efforts.
This might also revolve around the 'niche' industry your in, which could also play a part in Google's determination and action on such links.
This would make a really great test from an SEO perspective. I think I'll add this one to my books for 2012! If I find any results - I'll make sure to come back with some concrete answers
A good link I found to support Google penalizing the site linking to you more (because they are using hidden text and links) within their pages.

You made a low-effort attempt to get them removed.
Don't go to war over this.
If your site gets whacked... then go to war.

There was a whiteboard a few months ago (sorry I couldn't find the link) where Rand was talking about this. I believe they figured out that you will not be rewarded or hurt, but Google will simple ignore these links because of the fact that anyone could get anyone banned through tactics like this.
BUT, the fact that this is in a hidden div may alter this theory, so I'll let someone answer that for sure.

980 links from 75 domains and Graded "A" on Moz Page Grader-- still not ranking for our term. Thoughts?
A few additional interesting details: A blog post we wrote with the same keyword ranks 8, but this page does not crack the top 20. Crazy competitive term-- top SERP are from HBR, Entrepreneur and Inc. We use Instapage as landing page builder-- could this effect our rankings? URL is not a subdomain Pretty stumped over here. Thanks y'all!

My website has disapeared from all google queries except the ones that contains it´s own website name
Hi, My website URL is: www.nixiweb.com Before June of 2013 my website was always shown at first or second place at google when searching for "hosting gratis". After June of 2013 my website has disappeared from all searches, it only appears when I search for the site name, eg: "nixiweb" or “www.nixiweb.com” At webmaster tools, the search queries table only shows queries related to my website name (eg: "nixiweb" or “xixiweb”), and none related to any other keyword. Can anybody help me understanding which is the problem with my site? Thanks

Spam Links? -115 Domains Sharing the Same IP Address, to Remove or Not Remove Links
Out of 250 domains that link to my site about 115 are from low quality directories that are published by the same company and hosted on the same ip address. Examples of these directories are: -www.keydirectory.net -www.linkwind.com -www.sitepassage.com -www.ubdaily.com -www.linkyard.org A recent site audit from a reputable SEO firm identified 125 toxic links. I assume these are those toxic links. They also identified about another 80 suspicious domains linking to my site. They audit concluded that my site is suffering a partial Penguin penalty due to low quality links. My question is whether it is safe to remove these 125 links from the low quality directories. I am concerned that removing this quantity of links all at once will cause a drop in ranking because the link profile will be thin with only about 125 domains remaining that point to the site. Granted those 125 domains should be of somewhat better quality. I am playing with fire by having these removed. I URGENTLY NEED ADVICE AS THE WEBMASTER HAS INITIATED STEPS TO REMOVE THE 125 LINKS. Thanks everyone!!! Alan

Do nofollow links affect link profile?
I've read that it's good to keep a natural link profile. Some naked links, some links going to our company name, some with anchor text, etc. Do nofollow links affect this link profile, or is it only followed links that are taken into account?

Redirecting my new Website URL to my old Website URL
Hi! OK, I am semi - new to SEO Moz but have been self-teaching for 3 years. However I am stuck.. I have been operating my e-commerce site from www.shopadornonline.com for the past 3 years. I just purchased www.shopadorn.com Right now Shopadorn.com re-directs to www.shopadornonline.com because all my products and links go to shopadornonline.com/productblahblahblah I guess I am stuck. Not sure what to tell my web designer to do? Do I give up on having shopadorn.com OR do I start re-directing customers and doing 301 re-directs? I think from what i have read that it is bad to have traffic going to both shopadorn and shopadornonline as they compete for rankings? Where should I start?
